My entry for the Transmisssion 64 2024 music compo!
I got 9th place (on 14), not bad for my first compo entry ever :D
I could have chosen a more inspired title but I needed one ASAP as I wanted to be done with this tune and the pressure related to the deadline.
Technical info: 1x SID 6581, 50Hz speed.
Year of release: 2024.
Tools I used to make this:
Composition: GoatTracker 2,
Audio tracks: JSidPlay2,
Oscilloscope view: Corrscope

Pushing my engine even further :D Samples ripped from the SNES version of this music. I used the converted .it file as reference, but I remade some parts on my own since it wasn't convenient to use. Total filesize is ~177k characters, with samples stored in plain hex. Find the bytebeat file on my reddit profile (same username), youtube doesn't allow me to post external links yet. This is one of the osci views of all time. I coded a whole engine from scratch to make this cover. The end result is not 100% identical and it misses a few thing here and there (especially the slowdown at the end). There are also some volume pops but overall it's good enough I guess. I didn't manage to find all the chords of the original tune and not having its source file, I used the one from ...

A (messy) cover of the most mysterious song on the internet, which was a song aired on radio in the 80's, rediscovered on cassete recordings and still unidentified to this day. oh hey another banger from Sychamis :D congrats for the 9th place on the compo, hope you'll get to the top 3 next time!
Probably not next time lol. I may have a chance if I enter a compo from one of the few demoparties in my country but otherwise it would be close to impossible. I'm not able to match the skills of masters like jammer or Psycho858o yet ;)
@@Sychamis fair enough lol wish my country had demoparties at all
idk what this is but i fw it
This is a visualization of music made for a 42 year-old (ish) audio chip used in a legendary computer called the commodore 64. It can only play three channels of audio (three notes and three waveforms at once). Which are separately shown here.
amazing!!!!!!!!
Added to my Awesome Chiptunes playlist
PWM so fast it creates chords
nice oh yeah, have you tried setting the edge direction to falling (-1) on channels with (unfiltered) sawtooth waves? so that they don't shift around much when doing stuff like arpeggios (like in Voice 2 there)
Interesting. I should try that for my next tune I guess, I never bothered to change the triggering parameters.
@@Sychamis yeah lol

What studio/website is this?
I use GoatTracker 2. You can easily get it on any OS but it looks, let's say... "special". If you want something more user friendly try Furnace Tracker. If you were asking about something else all the software I used is in the description.
All info is in the description
@ oh thx
HOLY SHIT. Amazing
never heard of this song but its cool alright almighty
How do I make your engine play songs of my own?
There's some documentation in the code but basically you create "oscillators" that create produce waveforms, Use one or more as an instrument. The "mods" table allow you to code effects (like vibrato) and apply them to an instrument. I wrote instructions on how to sequence the instruments and add effects in the code.
awesome!! reminds me of some songs i used to listen to a few years ago, kinda brought the nostalgia···
This bytebeat is starting to get ridiculous - great work!
Straight fire
NICE!
> This tune takes a s i n g l e r a s t e r l i n e of CPU time. can you explain me how that works? sounds impressive
The driver has many limitations; as far as I know volume, waveform and pitch control is very limited on channel 1, 2 and channel 3 only plays drums or arps. Things like filter and pwm only get updates when the driver isn't doing something more important, though I didn't test the editor so I don't know what's possible or not. I also believe everything is as optimized as possible because pulling all this off on one rasterline, even with all the limitations is incredible.
@Sychamis damn it really is! i wonder if more tunes do that
@@ruby_R53 The driver/editor is the first one listed in the players tab on deepsid. 26 tunes were made on it.
@@Sychamis oh right, i forgot DeepSID exists lol

hi this is mineralcoinboi224 cool music man
cocktail hour is really the bad apple of the chiptune community now we just need the pc speaker cover and some guy with 8 floppy drives and an electric toothbrush
Someone already made a pc speaker cover of this tune (but there's no electric devices one yet, sadly). Also you forgot about famicommodore :P
@@Sychamis is there like a big playlist of every cocktail hour cover out there because searching the title keeps showing me other irrelevant stuff mixed in

dayum never thought i'd see (hear?) a filtered ring-triangle on a SID tune
Yeah, really neat effect it makes!
Very nice.
I like it :D
amazing! congrats on joining linux by the way ;)
I've been using linux for years lol (but not all the time though). I just didn't bother searching how to get everything I wanted to work until now.
@@Sychamis fair that's even better lol
Is this literally playing in one channel? It doesn't sound that bad! How did you make your engine work to export something well like this?
Even if this technically is one channel, it isn't. My engine can handle and mixes any amount of channels (three in this case). I used the built-in recorder on the website and converted the audio file to wav in order to visualize it. If I get the extra stuff to work I'll make an updated video where each channel is recorded separately.
AMAZING
25hz oh my god s
damn how's that a 25 Hz tune? and how are people still discovering these new stuff on such an old-ass chip?? 😭 i wonder how it'd sound like if it was composed in 50 or 60 Hz instead
Instruments in this tune were designed around this limitation so it sounds very nice as it is, but I think it would have sounded less harsh in the usual routine calling rate.
@@Sychamis yeah for sure it would
OH MY GOD THIS IS CRAZY s
I can give you the source file if you want, I found it after digging around on discord for long enough
Yeah, I'd like to get it to help on future covers! Try adding me on discord as I'm mostly active there.

NICE!
awesome, even more considering you wrote your own engine for that! how long did it take in total?
Something like 3 hours to get the engine to work and around 10 hours to make the cover.

@@Sychamis and i thought 3 hours was long on a bytebeat...

Cool cover! I made a cover as well on this and your version is nicely composed. I do think however that the high note that switches octaves during the chorus part should be E, not B to match the original if I am not mistaken.
Thanks for pointing that out, I wasn't sure which note was right and I thought B made more sense (I'm not a musician lol). I'll fix that if I re-release this tune in the future.
<3
Another tracker user posting oscilloscope views of his music :) Great Job!
am i the only one who thinks this would fit nice in a demo if it had a slightly richer melody?
Well, my goal is to make music for demos once I get good at composing. I wanted to see how well I could do that with this tune.
@@Sychamis ohh interesting, i guess it won't take very long :)
this sounds very good for a first song! do you plan on releasing your stuff to HVSC one day?
Thanks! I already release everything I make on csdb, my tunes should be added in the next HVSC update in December.
@@Sychamis i saw that, nice!
I love it <3 That lead is great, I feel like it sounds better than the original. I hope one day the mystery surrounding this song will be solved.
