great lp!
Very nice tune.
dig that syncopated rhythm in the vamps behind the first part of Mike's break - really cool
great listen,so many wonderful times had at beanblossom
Missing from the playlist after "John Henry" is "Pretty Fair Maiden in the Garden" ("as opposed to a really good maiden," as the late great recording engineer Mike Cogan used to say). Bill recorded it almost exactly 3 years later.
Thanks ~
Appropriately posted on Del's ("Dale's") birthday. I was at this show and remember it very well.
ol Brad Keith
SMOKIN!!
Thank you Butch…☮️🎶🔛🌎
That was it, thankyou very much.
Dear Mr. Butch, could you please direct me to the talk you gave concerning these topics of timing that you related to a train going down the track. I can't find it but need to review for myself and share that information with band members. Thanks Thomas

never realised it was bill hitting the high notes - awesome
So, cool that your're posting these. Thanks!
Billy Constable and me had talked about picking a duo in the Boone area just after he had his first surgery and just before the recurrence of his tumor. He was without doubt the most gracious musician I have ever picked and jammed with. The last time we jammed in Sugar Grove, NC, we jammed 8 hours, all night, to watch the sun rise. I miss him too. I'm not on FaceBook so was never even informed about the memorial jam, so it goes. Thanks for posting this. He was a wonderful and gracious human being and I'm blessed to have known him.
Wow, it's been 10 years. I sure miss him. He is the entire reason I play banjo. Thanks Butch.
That was a beautiful transition from Swing Low to I'll fly away! Bill Monroe was ahead of his time
Your use of Alternating Rolls beyond the thumb is nice. These have been part of my personal practice, but I don't often see them mentioned with other rolls beyond T-I-T-M. T-I-M-I for example is very useful for improvising variety in a backup situation. Helpful to see and insightful-thank you!
Thanks for sharing, Butch!
Great playing Butch
Awesome playing Butch. Who holds Bill's prewar top tension now?
@@jackdublanica Thanks. As far as I know, Herb Trotman still has it.
Pure class, Butch Robins.
Great to see you, Butch, and an excellent explanation. Personally, I hear a lot of bluegrass uptempo as being ahead of the beat (in England we say 'on top of the beat' meaning ahead, not right on - for that we say 'on the beat'), and that seems like where the drive comes from - people think it's speeding up, but it isn't. There's no doubt that the Foggy Mountain boys were always right on top of the beat (ahead). What is really odd is when the whole band falls in and plays on top! Why doesn't that just become on the beat? Also nice to see Peter and Tony's book on your shelf - it's a gem, and anyone interested in banjo should get it. Thanks again.
Great Medley.
Man bill is beating the shit out of that mandolin! I love it! Thanks for posting!
i played banjo since the 60s. i put it up for a time, and when i started playing again i noticed something odd. i still tapped my foot on the one and three, but everyone else tapped on the two and the four. my pace ALWAYS suffered because i played slightly ahead of the beat and as a result moved the pace ahead. unfortunately, it's all gone to hell these days.😁
Love it Butch
Epic jam!!
Was brother Birch before or after Paul Warren?
Paul Warren was never a Blue Grass Boy and Birch only made guest appearances with his brother Bill.
@ButchRobinsBanjo thanks was around them a bit as a kid ar the opry but wasn't sure
ive had this LP since you released it. so well done all around.
I’ve asked many to explain playing on or off the beat. I’ve never had it illustrated so understandably. Thank you
Awesome!
Beautiful keep it coming love bluegrass good sounding banjo Thank you from British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦 ❤
Great explanation. Thanks from the UK
Lost me with golf analogy. Golf is a good walk, spoiled. 😅
Or if you’re Willie Nelson, you sing way off the beat.. but it works. 😜
Butch this is awesome. I hope you do so more bluegrass timing lessons! Cheers from Knoxville!
Great version of a great tune played by a banjo expert - thanks Butch
Brilliant advice and information from an internationally acknowledged expert banjo player 🥰
what kind of metronome do you use? I like how that one lights up and clicks at the same time
It's an old brand called "FRANZ". I've used them for many years. You can still find them on eBay.
Rual Yarbrough always laughed about Bill Monroe calling him "Rual Yarbur." He gave me the banjo strap in that band picture. Thanks for posting.
Great picking of the great Don Reno song.
Terrific picking, and your 30 RB4 sounds amazing. Thanks.
happy new year
Sounds great I wish Gibson would start making banjos again
Like clockwork! This will actually help me, thanks for posting (saw the notice on the Hangout.)

Insane banjo skills!! Awesome stuff
thank you
That’s a great one.
