September Update - My Health Journey
Hi everyone,
I realized that I hadn't made a health update video in three months. This weekend is my 57th birthday, so it feels like a good time to give one. If you thought I might be backsliding because I haven't posted, I'm happy to report that, no, I'm still following the diet and still getting my 10,000 steps a day. It's all good news. I did have a couple of periods in the summer where I didn't make the goals, but that was because of a severe case of food poison followed immediately by C-19. Once I was past that, I resumed my usual routine. I also broke my diet a bit when I went to San Francisco for a week, but mainly to get a chocolate shake at Ghirardelli Square, and I walked about 15,000 steps a day in San Francisco. So even then, I lost a pound or two.
My weight this morning was 262 pounds. I have lost 56 pounds so far this year, leaving me only 12 pounds away from my goal of 250 by the end of the year. While I'm not losing at the speed I was during the early days of the diet, I am confident that I can lose another 12 pounds in the remaining three and a half months of the year.
The last time I checked in was in early May, and at that point, I was at 280 pounds, so another 18 lost since then is a significant number. That's a little under a pound a week, which is a healthy overall average.
There are 16 weeks left in the year, so I only need to lose less than a pound a week to reach the goal. I'm pretty sure I'll be doing better than that, but we'll see.
As far as non-scale victories go, I had a fantastic A1C score a couple of weeks back. It was just 5.1, which is the lowest A1C I remember ever having. Anything below 5.6 is considered the normal range, so I am well below that threshold and literally only half of the 10.2 rating I had at the beginning of the year.
All of my other labs also look good. I'm in the normal range for all my other tests, with the slight exception of my good cholesterol rating, which is always below average. Still, with a total cholesterol of only 96, I feel like I'm doing pretty great overall. Most importantly, my kidney function is in the ideal range, which feels really good after the kidney surgery.
Furthermore, I took my measurements this morning, and they were 18 at the neck, 48 at the waist, and 43 at the hips. I was looking back on my measurements at the beginning of the year, and there have been some excellent reductions since then.
At the beginning of the year, my neck was 19 inches, my waist was 56 inches, and my hips were 47 inches. That's a loss of an inch at the neck, 8 inches at the waist, and 4 inches at the hips. My old clothes fit very loosely, and I am now able to wear an extra large like this shirt as opposed to the 3X shirts I was wearing before. It's still a tad snug to me, but probably because I am used to all my clothes feeling like drapes. I'm hoping that with a few more pounds lost, these will be comfortable too.
As for future plans, I am thinking of making a secondary fitness goal for the rest of the year more related to a physical accomplishment, but I haven't settled on anything yet. I'll make another video if I come up with something.
That's it. I didn't want to make this super long, but I did want to catch up with those people who are still interested. Have a great day!

I have some good news to share about my health progress. My A1C level has decreased to 5.3, which is well within the normal range. This improvement is reflected in my fasting glucose average, which was 96 in April. I am still taking Metformin and Ozempic, so it's not solely the result of diet adjustments, but it appears that I am no longer experiencing glucose spikes, even when testing half an ...

Whenever I hear people in creative or technical fields talk about starting a career, the discussion invariably covers their situations when they started, how far they’ve come, and that that you just have to keep working hard. Hi! I was a photographer and before that, in the spa industry as an esthetician. Both jobs required 45 hour weeks of being around people, which was difficult as an introvert! I excel in grammar, have great computer skills, and interview well. There hasn't been a job I haven't gotten where I've had an interview, so at least I think I'm reasonably personable 🙃 I graduated high school in 2008 and went straight into the work force. Is it typically required to have a degree or are you able to get certifications and begin a career? Thanks for such a great video! EDIT: Also, is there a way to find a "niche" in technical writing? I know quite a bit about photography, art, painting, etc. As a TW, do you have to work on a wide array of subject or is it feasible to find something with regular work that you're already knowledgeable in?

    • @JohnHewittpoewar
      @JohnHewittpoewar 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Degrees are certainly beneficial for a technical writing career. Many companies have degree requirements, but not all. Working in more of a freelance capacity limits that need, and may be your best way in. There are many niches in technical writing, but they are mainly technical niches such as API writing. Your skills might be an advantage when applying to a company that produces photo or drawing apps, but other than that, I don't think it is a large niche, but you never know. Good luck!

    It is so great your weight is dropping and your diabetes is getting 'better'. I tried keto once and I just couldn't stick with it long term. I ended up with lotsa reflux etc cause of the high fat content. For me that's the problem with keto - not sustainable. I had more success with kind of a lower carb option that did have me in ketosis via a blood draw test where I ate carby food (oat meal) for breakfast and salady stuff for lunch and dinner. That is no starches like bread, potatoe, corn etc. I was able to eat beans though. I remember I was allowed fruit (berries) for breakfast and an apple or orange at lunch. So in no way as strick as 30 carb a day, but probably around 50 or 60. This way of eating did keep me in ketosis. Weird now that I think of it. Im also super impress how you have keeps the steps and active calories up. Don't let a small bump in the road derail you. Keto is hard! And sometimes it's wize to let the body rest.

    • @JohnHewittpoewar
      @JohnHewittpoewar 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! I am lucky enough not to have reflux most of the time, so that hasn't been an issue. I know that once I reach a certain state with my blood sugars, they give you a little bit more leeway, but I am trying my best to follow their plan. In the end, I have a hard time believing finer is a bad thing, but for now, I want to give it the best chance at success.
