Joanna Kolota w/ Empowering EAL Learners in Secondary Schools
One in five students are identified as speaking English as an Additional Language (EAL) and all teachers are highly likely to be teaching multilingual students in their classrooms. As our schools become more culturally and linguistically diverse, they must respond to the needs of the students in front of them, and this book provides a range of strategies and resources to ensure teaching is adaptive and responsive so that all learners thrive and fulfil their academic potential.
At the heart of the book is developing an understanding of how languages are acquired and an awareness that all students, regardless of their current English language proficiency, need to be offered a challenging and supportive environment. Chapters offer:
High-yielding, practical approaches and strategies to ensure that students are able to access content-appropriate lessons and simultaneously develop their language
A plethora of resources and step-by-step examples, showcasing how explicit vocabulary and grammar learning can be context-based for the benefit of all learners
Each teacher is positioned as a language teacher, with the responsibility of planning sessions where language is not perceived as an add-on, but as an integral and pivotal part. This book will empower you as an educator and ensure that your classroom is a language-aware and stimulating environment for your students. It will be essential reading for all secondary school educators and teaching assistants who support EAL students in mainstream lessons and are responsible for producing resources and implementing classroom strategies.

Great conversation! Thank you! We are relocating and our rising 2nd grader will transition (or not per assessment) from English to dual English Spanish immersion type of school. School year starts in late August here and DD must pass the test before their can accept her. Can’t find anywhere what are language level requirements at this level if the school’s immersion program is 50/50 daily from K and up. The school is not of help unfortunately, but they invite for the assessment. We were hoping for DD to pass since she is familiar with the Spanish somewhat, and we could hire tutors to help her. We want to know what to expect though. Thanks in advance, if someone can answer this question.

This was a such a necessary conversation. It is interesting to me that the imperatives for teaching reading exist in Britain as they do in the U.S. I teach reading to MLL's everyday at every level of the continuum and I would agree with everything that Chris Such said in the podcast. I envy his way of touching on all the important aspects of teaching reading, gracefully addressing the need for the systematic teaching of synthetic phonics, sound/letter correspondence, morphemes, to all students, especially MLL's while at the same time keeping all students engaged in why; the beauty of what reading can bring them. Learning to read and write English is hard work and students need to be reminded how amazing they are for doing the work; just like a coach would encourage them as they run up an extremely steep and rocky hill. Kudos to the orthography reference to Flemish typesetters, ghost, ghastly, (I love relating these weird facts to students), and his sum of teaching students with Dyslexia.
