Welcome to This House of Walls!
I love to use this space to share about homeschooling!
Our family has been homeschooling since 2020. We try to choose secular, inclusive curriculum or find ways to edit it to fit our views. We tend to choose classical or literature based curriculum but I will use anything that helps my children learn.

Nice seeing we’re not the only ones who fall behind with BYL. Those heavy days just come out of nowhere and really surprise you. Love your videos! Excited for your new channel. 😊
Thanks again for a great video! Your content is very interesting to me! I love the feedback on the books and how your kids rate them. Very unique format for homeschooling content and it's refreshing
Thank you so much!!! ❤️
❤📚📚❤️
I love these videos. Another book loving homeschool mama here. I'd love to follow you on goodreads too, but I couldn't find your link.
Welcome!! I will add it to the description. ❤️
@thishouseofwalls well, to be fair I've been here for ages, I just never comment lol But I'm excited to follow you there also.
Well I am glad you decided to comment. ❤️ I love to chat in the comments.
I had the same thoughts about Fate Inked in Blood. I really wanted to love it but I was just kind of hmm. Ok then. 😕
Yes! I thought the plot was pretty good but how it was done just didn't work at times. I still might try the next book.
I rate my books too high as well. Like…this is a 3 star book but the author gave it a good shot so here’s an extra 4th star. 😂
Yes! Also, if it is a popular book that so many other people loved I always want to rate it higher. I think I need to clearly write out my rating scale for books.
@@thishouseofwalls same here!
Are you still using it?
Yes! We are loving it! My 8th grader took a little break but we have pulled him back onto it. I will talk a little about it in my September wrap up next week.
Looks like a good TBR list. For October I am going to read a Stephen King book.
Oh fun!!
Well now I want to read all of those too😂
All of these sound so good and I now have them all on my TBR which is kind of stressful 😂
You're welcome! 🤣❤️
Love your videos🎉
Thank you! ❤️
I think this was an editing issue coupled with a writing style where Sanderson could have been pushed to tighten up his language. It makes it feel like it drags a bit and I was left always thinking "if I just make it one more page, something will get traction and the book will take off." This is a writing style issue where the story idea is neat but the writer is in slow burn mode and some readers want to get on with it already! I dont read slow burns well. I end up skimming and missing stuff and the DNFing. Maybe put book 2 on audio at double speed 😂
Yes! This is exactly how I was feeling. I was hoping that eventually the writing would suck me in but it never did. Oh I ended book 1 at double speed and it was still a struggle! 🤣
I struggle with dense fantasy books too. I want to get sucked into a world that I keep wanting to return to, but they just rarely pull me in. I live the series love vicariously through booktubers 😂
Yes! Nothing about this book really sucked me in. I will try again but maybe cozy fantasy is more for me.
“ the kids in public school are my kids peers, and we need success in public school.” This! It’s not an us vs them, we need all kids to have the opportunity to succeed. ❤
You need to move your whole mouth when you talk, including your upper lip.
Wow. What would I have done going the rest of my poor life without this advice from you?! Now I will be able to change something about myself and the way i naturally am since you so blatantly pointed it out. ❤️
Your coffee comments always make me laugh. Every time I start one of your videos I wonder if you are going to make a coffee comment and I look forward to and wait for it. lol
Haha! I'm glad you enjoy it! It's my little pep to keep me going through the filming. ❤️
I was so close to picking writers workshop. It seems like a fun program. My son is using book 8 of Writing and Rhetoric and we would definitely recommend it, if you’re looking for something new. You guys are doing so good with all your reading! We’ll probably read that many books this whole school year 😂! Beowulf Grammar looks so fun 🐶. I might buy it next year if my daughter doesn’t go back to school for 5th grade. Please share your thoughts on it.
We are still really loving Writers Workshop! I have temporarily taken my oldest off, but I am going to try to get him back onto it. My youngest used Writing and Rhetoric last year, and we loved the layout of it, but it got too religious for us in the next level. I think 5th grade would work with Beowulf really well! We are going slowly so my son will actually use it next year, too.
I liked Dark Matter so much, I gave it to my husband to read. Our styles don't always intersect but this one is universally good. Same with his Wayward Pines trilogy. I binged all three books on a drive to Michigan. I slowed down on the way home so I could finish the last one in the truck! I'm touch and go with Naomi Novak. I think I have trouble with the whole fairytale approach. Have fun reading that TBR!
Oh I can't wait to read some Blake Crouch books! I have heard so many great things about it. This will be my first Naomi Novak. I love fairytale feels but I am hoping it's not too YA for me.
Could you add a link to your TPT curriculum tracker you mentioned? TIA! ☺️
Oops! It's now added to my links in the description. ❤️
Blake Crouch is one of my favorite authors. I could read all of his books again, and I am not one to re-read books.
Oh, this makes me so excited to finally read my first one!
We tried and finished Word Roots Beginning. We enjoyed the first half, but the other half was a struggle. I feel that it's made for learners who excels in ELA. We have also tried Wordlywise 3000 Level 4 and made it halfway before dropping it. It wasn't as bad as Word Roots because you're given the definition. But there were a couple of exercises that were challenging because the information wasn't provided in the lesson, and that would set us back a good 15+ minutes. We also tried Vocabulary from Classical Roots. We only did one lesson. It's simple, easy, and doesn't take a lot of time, but thinking about it now, it felt more like busy work. Currently, we are using Sadlier Vocabulary Workshop Achieve Level A. I love it. My daughter doesn't mind it since we're taking it slow. The reason why it's working for us is because we're using their online resource, in conjunction with the workbook. Their online site has virtual flashcards, games, study aids, graphic organizer, and student resources. The only con is, the workbook has an exercise where you have to pick the right antonym or synonym, but the workbook doesn't have that information. You have to go on their online site or look it up yourself.
Have you tried Brave Writer?
I haven't. I've looked into it before but it feels too open-ended. I need a little more structure in a curriculum.
Chugging your coffee lol! We tried Word Roots for a couple days in 4th grade and both of us had trouble with it. There is the feeling of it being a workbook to show work done but no real follow up on using the words or remembering them as time goes by. We are both really bad at learning that way. Morgan asked to quit the book -- it's a good book, but probably just not right for us. Also, I'm totally buying Tree Girl now to see what's going on there. If it's too sad, I'll skim it. Does your 8th grade son type? Would he find "writing" easier if he typed his thoughts? Maybe have him type something up in Canva or another design tool since you said he was creative. Maybe pair the two... love your videos!
Yeah my 4th grader doesn't mind Editor in Chief but will see how my 8th grader continues with it. ❤️ Typing seems to stress him out a little more than writing on paper but maybe for future projects Canva would be good!
Editor in Chief is a tough workbook to learn new grammar concepts from. We only use it to review or keep up on grammar concepts we’ve already learned. He sounds a bit like my 7th grader. She has ADHD and really needs more direct instruction, scaffolding, and modeling from me in some subjects.
I have Editor and Chief and it wasn’t exactly what I was hoping for either. I don’t like how it doesn’t continue with finding the different types of errors as the book goes on, like you focus on one and that’s it. I’m looking into Evan Moor’s Daily Paragraph Editing, but in the end, I like Fix It best.
Yeah I think there are good and not so good from both. I think for now we will stick to it because Fix It wasn't really working anymore.
Great video!! Thank you. Did your son move from Math 5 of TGATB to Denison pre-algebra?
Thank you! We have tried lots of different math, including TGTB, Saxon, BJU, and Life of Fred. This is the first one that has ever clicked for him!
@thishouseofwalls wonderful. We are using level 5 of the good and beautiful.. my son is not a fan. We are going to use Denison Pre-algebra after the level 5. Hoping it’s not too much of a jump in levels.
My understanding is that Denison Pre-Algebra is great for 7th-8th grade to really prep them for high school math. Definitely check out what the recommend. TGTB is so busy and all over the place but maybe something else will fit better. ❤️
@thishouseofwalls Thank you! He is actually in 8th. We had switched to TGATB after a lot of gaps in our other math program. We haven’t been a fan of it at all. It’s extremely all over the place. We are about half way done with the math 5 but have been considering something else until we get to Denison
Oh totally understand! Denison is great at filling gaps!
Thank you for this detailed flip through! I’ve been trying to find the right Pre-Algebra for my son as we finish up RightStart and this one looks perfect for him. We aren’t there yet but next semester I think this will definitely be the one I get after seeing this.
You didn’t like the knot??!! 😂😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣 Nope! Definitely not for me.
So you can KNOT describe the steamy scenes in Bride lol
Exactly! I will KNOT go into detail on that. Haha!
BOOKS BOOKS BOOKS
I think you'll end up getting a lot of educational value for that money. Sales and thriftbooks/used books are so helpful for the budget!
Oh absolutely! It's a lot of money but it's investment with everything that they will learn.
I read Flora Lea earlier this year and thought it was great! The sexy Viking one caught my eye. My youngest is learning about Vikings so I put that one on my list to stay in the spirit of things. 😂
Of course digging deeper into what you kid is learning will be a huge benefit! Haha! Enjoy!
My friend and I will be starting this together next week! Can’t wait
Oh that's fun to be doing this with a friend!
I am SO excited to watch this when I get a chance!!
I loved this! I am thinking about also jumping in to this curriculum soon for myself. I can't wait to read that first book.
I purchased this unit after I saw her video, now I am collecting the books. I look forward to learning from this unit and any others she comes out with. Good luck!
How cool! ♥️
I'll be trying to do this too!
I loved watching this! I hope you get a lot out of it! 📚✏️
Thank you for making this! ❤️
Sounds like so much fun. I am thinking of Build Your Library for my son next year. While on the website I stumbled across the education unit. Thanks for this preview. It is greatly appreciated.
We have loved BYL, and the self education unit has the same amazing quality and resources.
11:58 when you mentioned Misty of Chicateague. Next year is the hundred year celebration of the horse crossing. It happens in July every year.
Oh that is so cool! I don't know that we will make it for the crossing but I would love to just visit Chicateague sometime soon.
@@thishouseofwalls it’s such a cute town. There are some older homes turned into museum there. Beautiful parks and water views. Great place to enjoy.
I will say I don’t like Brandon Sanderson, and yet I’m reading the 4th book in his Skyward series rn and about to rereread The Stormlight Archive books in preparation for the new release 🫠. I hope you enjoy what you’re reading! I love Murderbot.
That is dedication! Just wondering- why don't you like him?
Love your content! I search for your videos because we use Build Your Library and my middle son is Grd 8 this year...so I like to hear how it works for others. I have always done my 10 and 13yr olds together in younger grade BYL because I feel that BYL is so rich even in the early years. However you are inspiring me to split them and try letting my 8th grader be more independent with perhaps grd 7 or 8 BYL curriculum
Thank you! We have found that my kids work better separately so that has encouraged my oldest to be more independent. I hope you have a great school year!
This was really helpful! I ended up getting it! Let’s hope this works for us. It looks really good!
Enjoy! ❤️
thank you for this flip through, it was perfect for me
