The Art and Science of Business Valuations Insights from Over 1,500 Valuations with Brandon Hall
In this episode of Independence by Design™, I sit down with Brandon Hall, an expert who has conducted over 1,500 business valuations across a wide range of industries. We dive deep into the importance of understanding and controlling the value of your business. Brandon shares his journey from a corporate accountant to a trusted advisor in the valuation space, reflecting on the lessons he’s learned from his extensive experience, especially in working with small to medium-sized businesses.
We break down the three primary valuation methods: income-based valuations (with a focus on cash flow), asset-based valuations (looking at tangible assets), and market-based valuations (comparing similar businesses in the market). I place particular emphasis on cash flow valuations, which are the most actionable and controllable by business owners like you. We discuss why understanding and managing your cash flow is crucial-not just for keeping the lights on but for driving long-term growth, strategic planning, and maximizing the equity value of your business.
By the end of this episode, you'll have a clearer understanding of how to take charge of your business’s valuation, why cash flow is such a critical metric, and how you can use it to make informed decisions that will help you achieve the independence you’re striving for.
Brandon Hall is the founder of BGH Valuation Services, LLC, is a seasoned valuation expert with over 2,000 business valuations under his belt. Based in Saint Michael, MN, Brandon holds a B.S. in Accounting from Saint Cloud State University and has extensive experience from his roles at Polaris Industries and Best Buy Corporate. A Certified Valuation Analyst® and Certified Machinery & Equipment Appraiser, Brandon is dedicated to helping businesses understand and maximize their value.

    I loved this podcast and how relatable it was to real life. The concept of managing the challenges of dental school while still focusing on career growth was eye-opening, showing how important balance is. You don’t have to excel at everything all at once. I also find it fascinating that while we can figure out multimillion-dollar businesses, maintaining healthy and fulfilling relationships with our significant others remains one of the most challenging lifelong projects. The key is to not give up! :)

    I value roads. Happy to build them in cooperation with my fellow taxpayers. I can get involved with policy to get better roads delivered better for the people who build and drive them.

    • @ryantansom
      @ryantansom หลายเดือนก่อน

      100%. It’s a service that’s needed and 100% valued by a lot of people, especially me. And I would be happy to pay taxes for it as well. If we had sound money (money that was hard and not printed out of thin air), we would have to raise the taxes and we would all have to agree on what the money that taxes are being raised for is allocated to. When someone artificially increases the money supply, it creates money out of thin air and steals peoples time like you who create the roads by debasing the currency (reduces your savings because the hard work you did to earn that money is worth less because the money supply grew… see the example I gave in the video about my twins and chores). This issue arises when people closest to the money printer get to decide how much is printed and where it goes instead of asking for the revenue from people who earned it. Our deficits are funded by money printing instead of deciding what we really need. I would argue roads and education and the basics are the most needed and wouldn’t get much argument or push back from the public if we had sound money that wasn’t just printed out of thin air and actually needed to be collected from people via taxes.

    • @ross60
      @ross60 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ryantansom all road funding comes from taxes paid.

    • @ryantansom
      @ryantansom หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ross60100% and as I said, because it’s a utility, I would agree that most people would want to pay that tax so you could do the roads. The problem comes when the government is able to print money from nothing, They’re not forced to make hard decisions between roads and other things (they don’t have a finite amount of tax revenue to work with if they just print money ) So the government just prints money and therefore is devaluing mine and your savings (if the money supply grows mine and your savings is worth less). As I mentioned in my earlier comment, I would argue that people would always be willing to pay taxes to pay for roads. It’s all the other stuff that the government spends money on above and beyond what they raise in taxes, is the issue. When they don’t have the money they create money from nothing, they devalue your savings and my savings.

    The passing of a family business to the next generation is a very contentious and emotional process that there is no one way to get it right (more of getting it wrong most of the time) and the third generation curse is not much of a help. There is a lot of lessons to be learned from the past and from good research. Do you think you can do better? Are you ready now? I think it is best to actually hear it from families who actually got to the third generation or even beyond.... familyenterpriseconference.com/2018/08/15/challenge-2-the-challenge-of-leadership-succession-in-the-family-business/?
