I have moon gauges in my 1991 chevy c2500. Same one you have
Late style moonie gauges. They are definitely easier to read than the early style moonie gauges.
All worth it in the long run my friend! 😎👍
It is! I'm trying my best to give this old truck all the best factory options from throughout the production run. Thanks for stopping by!
Awesome 👍
It certainly is!
What does the plug look like on a 92-94 style cluster? Can i use the dashboard from an 88 into a 94 and use the 94 cluster in the 88 dash ? Reason I ask is my 94 dashboard is badly cracked and I found an uncracked dash in a donor 88, but was told the opening for the gauge cluster wiring is different. Can i just open up the hole in the back of the dash itself and plug my 94 cluster into the 88 dash without issue? Would be using all the 94 wiring, only the dash itself would be from the 88. Well, the radio too.
The 92-94 cluster pigtail has 'fingers' on the plug. The early style dashes will work in the later years, but you will have to cut out the opening for the plug some. Just take your time doing it. If you search GMT400 dash swap or other similar phrases, you should be able to find some pictures of it. There's an individual in one of the forums, who did exactly what you're looking to do.
@@WesleyJohnsonMI@ amigo! If truck its already swapped! 89 gmc, Can i ignore the drac? If using 94 cluster!? Just by running the tach and soeed wire to ls pcm? Correct?
I had no idea there was that many options for those trucks back in the day. Pretty amazing how much longer they are compared to the NP241
Yup, 4 different Borg Warner cases, with a couple of different configurations for the K3500 trucks & NP241C & NP208c transfer cases for the K1500 & K2500 trucks. Not just longer either, the whole case is considerably larger. The Borg Warner case just dwarfs the New Process case.
Can any of these transfer cases bolt up to any th350-400 transmissions?
They should bolt up to the TH400, with the proper transfer case adapter. The TH400 & 4L80E share the same output shaft size. The TH350 shares the same (smaller) output shaft size as the 700r4 & 4L60E and will not work with the Borg Warner transfer case. Remember, the Borg Warner cases need a switched power for the clutch pack.
Nice job with the explanation on the transfer cases. You ain't kidding, the size difference between them is pretty crazy! 😦 Work is work buddy, that stuff always comes first. 🔧
Thanks! I'm still constantly learning new things about this era of trucks. Yeah, the size difference is kinda mind blowing! Gotta work so I can keep putting money into my projects!
👍
Hi i have a 1993 chevy cheyenne and sitting in park revving up the motor the speedometer goes way up into the 60 mph zone and driving it realling bounces around clear up to 80 mph when im only going around 30 mph do you know what my problem would be ? it's a v-6 engine. i was going to check speedometer cable but looking at your clusters they don't use a cable mine is like the one you have on top right. Thanks.
Yeah, they stopped using cables with the square bodies. Check the grounds near the thermostat housing and the plug behind the ashtray. I have a video titled 'fixing a bouncing speedometer' in one of my playlists. It'll either be in the 1992 K1500 or the GMT400 playlist. Be sure to read the comments, I've helped a couple of others out with their problems.
What a Boss truck. Where is it now? I've got a 1952 F6 that rides like a drag box over rockey ground, but the sound of its flathead V8 is somthing else.
I still own it. It's sitting out back waiting on time, money & ambition. There's a whole playlist on my channel dedicated to this truck.
Its alive!!!
Machines’ definitely seen some hard use, but it’s cool that the engine still has good compression after all these years. Have a lot of respect for guys who ran those for a living compared to what we have in today’s market.
I've seen (and bought) machines in a lot worse shape. But the key thing is, that it was maintained. They even went as far as turning the pins & bushings in it. I do too. Those old machines definitely beat you up through out the day. Most operators won't even run a machine if it doesn't have a cab with heat & a/c.
It's worn but still very usable Wesley 🙂👍 Happy to see you help him with getting the engine un-stuck. Have a safe trip back 🔧🔩
It's very much both! He's excited to get it running & put back in service. Thanks!
Good to hear from you again! Those undercarriage parts are going to be hard to find. It might take some, or maybe more, imagination getting it up to par. Cool old machine, though. I'm glad it got saved with the added bonus of being a family heirloom. Cheers Terry
Thanks! Outage season has kept me busy. Not too concerned about the undercarriage right now. It's not going to be used much. I do have some old Caterpillar literature about refurbishing undercarriage with weld build up. But that's down the road. I'm glad that it got saved too. The machine is actually in pretty good shape considering what it's been through. The new owner is definitely excited about it.
Midland. Neon lights
They've got a bunch of good songs. I'm glad that I found them.
Thanks much,
Is it possible to put the moon gauge one (90s) on a 93?
Never tried it, most people want a factory tach dash. The biggest problem is going to be the drac/vssb. The moonie gauges are built in internally to the cluster, where the '92-'94 are external.
I have an Insley just like that. What is the hydraulic oil capacity? I have some work to do to it.
If memory serves me correctly, it's around 150 gallons.
@@WesleyJohnsonMI Thats more than I thought. I'm about to bring one home any time now that has sat for 8 years and had no oil when I bought it. Changed a couple of hoses, put a cylinder back together and fixed a few other things. It's about ready to fire up and try out before getting it on a truck.
@@be2570w gotcha. Yeah, the H875 has quite the reservoir. The H560 will obviously be smaller. There are 3 magnetic pickup screens on the passenger side, in a tank just below the pumps. There's a plate that unbolts from the bottom. I'd clean that out before filling the system. Does yours have a 4-71 detroit or a cummins in it?
@@WesleyJohnsonMIThanks. I'll look for the plate. It has a 4-71
Hey man. Do you know where I could find the fuel pump for this thing?
Bought mine off of Amazon. Do a Google search for Kohler CH20 fuel pump. Should be able to get a part number that way.
Steamfitter?
Yes, I am a Steamfitter. What about yourself?
The 454 big block will tow a trailer as if it weighs next to nothing!
It's a hoss for sure! I can pass everything but a gas station! 🤣
Hey at the 2:17 mark, did those clusters with a RPM gauge ever go up to 6,000 RPMs by any chance?
No, the '94 & prior clusters only go to 5,000 RPM. I *think* the '95 is also 5,000 RPM (because it's still TBI, but has the round dash) and the '96 & newer are 6,000 RPM.
@@WesleyJohnsonMI Dang
What color are the three wires that need repinned?. I could tell by your words in the video you were with out a clue..too obvious
I don't recall off hand. Look in my playlist for the one titled GMT400 info, there is a video linked to another gentleman, who does an excellent job explaining the wiring pin out, with links to schematics.
Hi I’m wandering where I can find the one for the 91 thanks
Ebay, market place or junkyards. You're going to pay a premium for them. Good luck.
I just got one of these. start and runs good, but wont make power for tools and wont weld. any ideas
Check out my video on how to polarize a welding machine. If that doesn't work, I do have another video on some troubleshooting for this particular machine. I do recommend downloading the owner's manual. It's free & does have a troubleshooting guide in it. What's the voltage at the 120v plug when it's on high idle? You might want to consider cleaning the comutator where the brushes contact it. They sell a comutator stone for this purpose, it's around $10. DO NOT use sand paper to do this, it'll be an expensive fix if you do.
Check the fly wheel magnets behind it age in time I replaced mine all golden that and the bridge rectifier 10$ item
I guess mostly the same applies for the manual transmission truck's instrument cluster with the shift light? Thanks for the video.
Yes it should. I've never dealt with one of these trucks with a standard transmission, so I can't say for 100% certainty.
I have a 94 truck withe the 4 gauges across the top with tach. Tried to install a 93 with with tack and gauges on sides with wood grain insert. Fuel gauge appears to be working bavkwards. Have you seen this?
Does the fuel gauge work backwards or is it shorting to ground?
Sir I have a 1968 F500 with 7.5 20 wheels and tires. today i got some used 9.0 20 wheels and tires for it. I plan to put the two 9.00 wheels and tires on the steer axle and move the 2 7.50 steer tires to one of the rear axles. currently the passenger rear outer tire is flat and damaged. I found a 22.5 wheel at the truck salvage but not sure about converting to that size. i want to keep my 20 split rims or whatever but i am on a budget and need to replace the flat blown out tire. a man at a tire shop said he would sell me a lug wrench for $30. anyway, when the speedometer says 50 my google gps says i'm going about 47 so i think the 7.5 are not the correct size. not sure if 8.25 or 9.0 is correct. my distributor went out again so i replaced it with duraspark from a 79 and 83 truck. 300 cubic inch inline six.
Okay, the 7.50x20 tires are more than likely the correct size for that truck. You can run 8.25x20 on it and probably the 9.00x20 tires. Just remember that you can't mix & match tire sizes on a drive axle. As far as running a 22.5 radial tire, the appropriate size should be a 9r22.5, that should be about the same size as a 9.00x20. I would recommend confirming this with a tire shop. If you have the clearance, you can run a 11r22.5, which is a taller tire. Your front axle fender/frame clearance will be the determining factor. As far as the speedometer is concerned, there is usually a 5% discrepancy in the actual speed. So that works out to about 2.5mph +/- this happens because of the available drive & driven gear ratios for the speedometer. Also there might be a ratio multiplier attached to the back of the speedometer. This device helps to get the speedometer to a closer/more accurate reading than what the drive/driven gears can. They come in different multipliers I.E.: 1.06, 1.12, 1.20 etc. You will never find a 'perfect' combination, just something close.
Is this the same for a 1992 Chevy suburban k1500?
Yes, should be the same from 88-98.
what are those big capacitors numbers? I have to rebuild this exact machine haha
It has four 200mfd, 150vdc capacitors. These are obsolete from Lincoln and the parts list shows a kit(S18696-A) for replacement that has only one capacitor. This kit is also obsolete. I've searched online looking for replacement 200mfd 150vdc capicitors and didn't find any with screw terminals. I have found a 800mfd 150vdc from Lincoln, part number S13490-114. The single 800mfd will be an appropriate replacement for the four 200mfd capacitors. Most of that text is taken from two different posters on welding web. There are several good rebuild threads on that site, that go into great detail and have plenty of part numbers. I'd link the threads, but my comment will get deleted.
I have an '88 6.2l in need of a new instrument cluster. I have no tach now so knowing there will be no tach afterwards, are any of the '88-'94 gauges usable (recognizing the need of a pigtail for the '92-'94)? With a panel from a gasser, I would assume no glow plug light as well.
That's correct, you'll need a pigtail, the DRAC module & pigtails for the 92-94 clusters. There will be no glow plug light. Other than that, it should work, minus the tach. What's wrong with your current cluster? Have you tried sourcing a diesel cluster from a newer truck?
@@WesleyJohnsonMI I expect the issue is a cold solder joint. The truck sat for several years and once I started using it again, the speedometer was not working. After several "Fonzi slaps" (which I later found that others had also resorted to) it started working but needed repeated 'adjustments' until I gave up on that (at the time it was working relatively regularly). When it is cooler, it is more likely to work than once the cab warms up. When you say tried sourcing from a newer truck... how new can I go to?
@andywillis1110 'newer' is up to 94 model year. Sorry, I may have had a poor choice of words there. If you haven't already checked, there is a 4 cavity pigtail behind the ashtray. The power wire in that pigtail has a bad habit of melting. It's one 14ga wire & three or four 20ga wires (2 of the wires share a cavity) that go into it. I do have a video on my channel titled 'fixing the speedometer' or something similar to it. I'd suggest taking a look at it.
So if i had a cluster from a 94 with a v6 but then put a v8 in it, do i still need to get a cluster that had a v6 for the tach to work right?
If you're going from a V6 to a V8, you should be able to put a V8 cluster in it & have it function properly.
You forgot to mention the 88-89 4x4 with mechanical speedometer.
I have personally never seen a GMT400 with a mechanical speedometer. I even worked on a 1988 K1500 this past fall & it was electronic. Do you have a picture of one?
I never use bondo when i weld in patchs, conpressed air blowing on each tack as you go helps keep it from srinking. And if it needs filler lead works the best.
Compressed air does help. Choice of filler is up to the user. They both have their positives and negatives. In the end, you can only do so much.
I think it looks great. Patch panels are never easy and it looks way better than what was there to begin with. That’s a win/win in my book👍
For what it is & what it needs to do, it turned out pretty good. He's happy with it and that's what matters the most.
Looks like you done a great job Wesley! 😁👍 Little filler and it'll be unnoticeable 🔧
It turned out fairly well. No filler on this job though. He just wanted it sealed up.
Good pointers. I assume you mig welded the corners. I know you have stick welded projects in the past. Thanks
Yes, it was mig welded with 0.030 wire. Wish I would have used 0.023 wire. I could have turned the heat down a lot more. I do have a habit of stick welding most of my projects though 😂
Rust repair is never fun. I gotta start that soon myself
It's not fun, but it's easier to do when you catch it sooner, rather than later. Good luck on your project!
I agree Wesley. Less is definitely more in this instance. No need to cut out good material just because the patch panel is oversized. Gonna look so much better when it’s finished😀👍
You're right about that! At least it will be sealed up & keep the mud & snow out of it.
You're 100% right my friend! 😁👍 The less of the new panel the better. Glad to see you making headway Wesley 🔧
Thanks! I'll be glad when this thing is done! Hopefully by the end of the weekend, he'll be driving it.
Cool color
It's definitely different!
What is the company you found that rebuilds these ? I really want to have my 91 "tach dash" rebuilt.
ats4solutions.com/chevrolet-cluster-repair/ is one of the companies that I have found. I haven't used them, so I cannot comment on the quality or price of their work. I ended up just wiring in a '92+ tach cluster into my '91 big block truck.
Trucks looking great and only gonna get better from here. Those cab corners look like they’ll be a lot of fun🤣.
Thanks! Yeah, I'm not exactly looking forward to doing them! It'll be nice once it's done and over with.
Getting closer Wesley! 😁👍
It is! I'll be glad when it's finally done!
Lookin' good!
Thanks! I appreciate it!

Have you downloaded the appropriate owner's manual for your machine? There's usually a wiring diagram & troubleshooting guide for that particular machine/engine in that manual.
Great job like to see those old Chevys get back on the road
Thanks! That makes two of us! I'm definitely partial to the '90s era of trucks.
