Students of Movement
Before poetry, my main passion was dance. I couldn’t get enough of it, immersing myself in hula, breakdancing, popping, locking, capoeira, yoga, house, etc. I wrote Students of Movement to honor that love, and when trying to figure out how to perform it, I decided to incorporate various movement disciplines that I have learned throughout the years. I enjoy doing this piece during my longer poetry sets/tours because it allows me to change things up a bit with the dance element.
A number of years ago, Jonathan Clarke Sypert was directing a show for The Movement Center, and he wanted to pair up various folks from our performing arts community to collaborate with established dance troupes. He paired me up with Convergence Dance Theatre and Jason Tom (beatboxer), and when they asked me if I had any pieces that spoke about dance, I immediately thought of Students of Movement! Here’s the final piece that came out of our collaboration, featuring the talented movement of Malia Moguel, Elisabeth KM, Renzo Marc Acosta, Shannon Chong, Megan Kiyomi Inada, and choreography by Jenny Shannon Butler.

A native Hawaiian scientist/poet's thoughts on Maunakea and the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT)
มุมมอง 3.2K5 ปีที่แล้ว
As a native Hawaiian scientist/poet who loves telescopes and who has created a theatrical show that speaks extensively on astrophysics and the Big Bang, I have been asked numerous times about my opinion on Maunakea and the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). I feel that this piece expresses my thoughts fairly accurately. To learn more about the movement and to get involved, go to www.puuhuluhulu.com ...

Thing is the science won't be as good at the Canary Islands. That is provably a fact. Plus those islands also have natives and SOME of those natives don't want the telescope* for some of the same kinds of spiritual reasons. So with all due respect... let us treat your belief just as we do those of, say, any other religion in the USA. *www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2019/08/06/environmentalists-canary-islands-well-seek-legal-action-stop-tmt-coming-here/

The Guanches of the Islas Canarias , chose to jump off the cliffs , rather than be dominated and enslaved by the newcomers - The Hawaiian Queen specifically stepped down to prevent the murder of one single one of her people . The stupidity of thinking that One mile closer to the sky , is going to make any difference when regarding the realm of infinity , is incredible in this day and age . The scientific break through will be internal , inside the conceptual understanding , not in the external story . This is the meaning of Maccu Piccu - Keep going up , as high as you want , know it all from without , then turn within .

@@kealohapoetry Great job connecting a peaceful, benign, altruistic telescope to historical grievances and bad blood that astronomy did not create. Great job neglecting to mention that the TMT building foundation is 1.5 acres out of a 11,200 acre science reserve of a 52,500 acre maunakea forest range. Great job ignoring how Mauna Kea connects Mother Earth to Father Sky just like a telescope bridges the āina and the lewa lani. Great job refusing to offer positive and constructive compromises for how science and culture can coexist on the mauna. Great job using poetry for propaganda and not objective, critical thinking. Hawaiians are supposed to face the _past_ to guide them to the future, not live there. The kanaka refer to themselves as a star people, created from star dust, who used the heavens as a roadmap. The kia'i want to revoke this driver's license and prevent humanity from getting where it needs to go. The kupuna gazed at stars. Modern people would like to do the same. However, the protesters only want them to stare at their feet, walk out the door and take astronomy with them. Great job taking a tool of learning and making it a tool for propaganda. Great job holding world astronomy hostage for politics. Great job.
