Hey. I'm Chris. I go by Hemi. Welcome to my TH-cam channel.
This is a fun little place where I upload music videos and push myself to expand my skills in all things music and video production.
My main focus at the moment is metal covers of video game music but I play and write for a variety of genres and styles so expect anything.

Live and Learn - Sonic Adventure 2 (Metal Cover) Feat. Devin Honaker
Live and Learn - Sonic Adventure 2 (Metal Cover) Arranged and Performed by Chris Hmieleski and Devin Honaker
Originally Composed by Johnny Gioeli and Jun Sunoue
Nobody told me that this would be the most difficult cover I've ever done. There's a certain weight to doing covers of extremely popular songs and I feel like as far as VGM tunes are concerned, it doesn't get more popular than this. On top of that, there was a movie recently that put this song back in the spotlight so at some point during the process, it dawned on me that there would likely be more eyes on this than most of the stuff I cover. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
Devin Honaker is one of my oldest friends and when I first started doing metal covers, he had expressed an interest in doing live and learn. We both have a long standing history with the song and it felt like a no-brainer, but I knew that my playing and songwriting wasn't what it needed to be to pull it off. EVERYONE covers this song. The solo alone has been done so many different ways, so the question became: How do I make this mine?
The instrumental was heavily inspired by the band Galneryus who was another massive influence on me from the same time period. I think it mainly shows in the riff structure and the synth usage, which I'm really happy with. Vocally, I wanted to go in a completely different direction. I knew Devin would stay mostly faithful to the original, so I wanted to bring in Opeth growls as a change of pace. Typing this out, I actually think its a cool reflection of my musical tastes circa 2009.
The coolest thing about this project in particular was getting to do it with an old friend. Speaking for myself, close friendships that stand the test of time are a rarity. Devin has always been supportive of my work and I really wanted the video to be in appreciation to him and the friendship we have, especially since he was so patient while I missed my deadline by a month. (Oops)
There's a lot of love in this one, and while I would have liked to have it out sooner, there's not time like the present. I hope you all enjoy it!

I'm gonna keep it a buck with you all, I battled this song. I've known (more or less) how to play the main parts of this song for a few years now, but trying to do the entire thing in one take, it's a whole different beast. Every time I play it, I hear a different fill, or a note that wasn't quite where it needed to be, or something. I tried at the beginning of december to record a playthrough ...

So this is definitely not the video I was hoping to have done this week, but I honestly don't care. When Prequelle first came out, I was in a band called Dear Abigayle (or The After depending on who you asked and when). We had just lost our singer and were struggling to keep ourselves focused and motivated without any real plans, goals, or direction. One of our guitarists had recommended learni...

Not going to lie, this stage the music gave me the creeps, and since I live in Minnesota, January is the coldest month because it’s 15- Cold and Dry
Which part of Minnesota? That doesn't sound that cold for where I live in the twin ports. It was -22 this morning on the Wisconsin side where I live and the same on the top of the hill where I work in Duluth, -45 with wind-chill
This music in metal version gives to me the sensation of to stay in a winter season in 🇫🇮 , I think what this is because the music style chosen 🤣
evrything sounds so good... exept there is no bass at all...
That was a decision made in mastering because I was already hi-passing everything way harder than normal and still getting a super ugly low end where I lost the drums and lead guitar completely in areas. Is it perfect? No. Nothing I do is. It sure sounds better than it did though.
@@HemiVGM i just did a A/B with the same song from SA2... and its VERY obvious.... its like you forgot to unmute the kick and the bassguitar. idk tho...
I'll take it under advisement.
@@HemiVGM very nice c:
Esto está bien cabron!!!! 🔥🇵🇷
Hell yeah! Glad you like it.
Man, this is such a good cover. You even managed to get the feel of the original song that a lot of covers loose.
Hey thanks! I'm glad you like it. It's tough to find balance between being faithful to the original and adding your own twists, especially with a song that's as popular as this one.
@@HemiVGM I feel you've definitely found that balance. Keep at it!
This is badass.
@sharkdaddi thanks man! Glad you like it.
The most metal cover of this song on here! Nicely done
Hey thanks! It's been done by every cover musician ever so I was really hoping I could bring something a little different to the table.
Twas an absolute privilege and honor to perform this song with you my friend! Thanks for opportunity! Loved every second of this experience!
@64yoshikid The privilege is all mine! Sonic Heroes when though?🤔
@ hit me up whenever
Hanging on the edge of this rockin' cover!
@@xXMayfuyuXx Glad you like it!
DESDE EL INICO likeeeeeeeeeeeee !!!! EPICO
Good Job bro
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Hell yeah bro 😎
Hands down the coolest arrangement I've done at the time of pinning this.
Sorry it wasn't JPs theme. I know how much everyone loves hearing that one.
Cool stuff!
Thanks! Glad you like it.
This was a great watch and listen, I know passion projects take their time and it really shows across the gameplay shots and the extra creative guitar/basslines!
Thanks man! I'm glad the extra touches are getting immediate recognition because thats been one of my biggest shortcomings in the past. I've had ideas, but never really been able to execute them in a meaningful way. We're getting there though. Glad you liked it!
The Hemi serves the snacks once again!! 😁 awesome stuff, bro!
Thanks man! I'm really stoked with how this one came out all around.
@@HemiVGM love the clips of you kicking ass in SF as well 😁
@@Skarmillion modern Honda is a menace and needed to be stopped lol.
THE BEST COVER I HAVE EVER HEARD. 💗
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Man this one's fuckin alright 🔥
Its the alright-est song in my catalog so far lol. Glad you liked it.
Woooooooowwwww😮
Love the content! Great work as always!
Thanks my friend! You and I need to discuss future plans. 👀
That intro builds tension perfectly! Epic cover of this banger from X3
Hey thanks! I was really happy with how the intro builds into a heavy payoff. Glad you enjoyed it!
my GOAT
You know I gotta bring it hard when it comes to MMX. Glad you liked it sir!
Absolute banger man!! 🤩🎵
Yo!! Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Man! The Megaman X games has some absolute bangers!!!! Good choice in song and really damn well played 😁
Thanks! Glad you liked it. For sure my most difficult tune to play. (So far)
Just casually dropping smooth beats, strong strings and sick footage captures! It's just the Hemi&Wife way!
It doesn't get done alone thats for sure. Glad you liked it!
Dude one of the best remasters of the song in rock format. If you ever do a synthwave version im all down for it.
Hey glad you like it! I hadn't thought of doing a strictly synthwave cover of it but that would be really cool.
Yo, thanks so much for including the intentional discordance within the song. So many covers leave that bit out even though it's so integral to the "this place is amazing but something's not quite right here" feeling that the Area Zero Theme is supposed to have.
I'm glad someone caught that. "Integral" is a strong word but I think you're spot on that the dissonance on that part sells the atmosphere. You're in a beautiful place, not a safe place.
This tickles my prog-admiration in a way that I didn't know I needed for the day. And what a rare Viking Singing treat! Knew it from the thumbnail, this would be a fun one. Great work, notable progress, tingly earworm Thanks for jamming!
Thanks for listening! I'm really proud of this one, so I'm glad you like it.
Ascended Pun intended. Vocals as dirty as a proper Ed Reversal and videography as clean as executing them on a HitBox <3 Keep it up!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! Won't be long before the return of the EX upper turkey. 🦃
I'm loving the vibe of this song, but it did feel like it needs some extra spice. Still, fantastic work, I'm looking forward to more great music
This one needed more time to cook for sure. I know what I'd do differently, so maybe I'll redo it at some point.
The vibe is so smooth, so *clean,* love it
Hey thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Só quem é da época vai saber o que eu estou sentindo
Your style is COOOOLL ♥
Thanks! These bass jams are incredibly fun to put together. Glad you enjoyed it.
I was looking up MegaMan old themes and found this absolute gem! Good GOD!!👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿✌🏿✊🏿💯
Hey thanks! Glad you dig it.
Love this song, especially when it is done the way you have arranged it. Bravo!
Hey thanks! Glad you like it. 😁
Rock on brother!
This is a well done groovy work
Hey thanks! Glad you liked it.
Went straight to the Retro Universe for this one!
Yeah I went with some of the Primus classics. I'm stoked with how it came out all things considered.
Love it!! Defenitely has got some good ol' Primus stink to it ;D
Thanks man! I'm glad the influence shines through.
Show meu amigo.. sou fan de Megaman e tenho 35 anos.. imagina aí . Kkk
💖
I am amazed that this doesn’t have more views. Lufia was a game I loved as a teenager, the story and music and everything. Every time this song came on to give us the story of The Sinistrals I genuinely got chills thinking about it. This is an incredible cover like I’m getting chills listening to it. It’s making me feel like I need to fight Daos and his crew right now.
Hey thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Fortress of Doom was the spark that ignited my love for RPGs as a kid. I'd love a reason to do more music from it.
great cover!
Hey thanks! Glad you like it.
after seeing so many covers of Area Zero, i have finally seen the best one ;D you're doing this JUST right!!!! awesome as always!!!
I don't know about all that but I'm glad you liked it man.
You just can't stop the strings! (Especially not with the power of Marvel on your side!) Now to replay this at least a few... Many times!
Another banger from the best I know!! Great work always my friend!
Much love brother!!
underrated youtuber
I would heavily disagree but I appreciate it. 😂
What a huge complex build up to get back to videos dude, but glad you did! Lot of Ziltoidy inspiration definitely comes through and you still have a neat grungey sound to the whole thing!
Thanks Ro! It was a battle to get back into it, but I'm feeling waaaaay better about my process start to finish. Things are definitely looking up. 😁
