The Great Allegheny Passage: Rockwood to Confluence
In this episode, we explore one of the longer point-to-point segments on the Great Allegheny Passage, the 17.8 mile Rockwood to Confluence segment!
This segment is a cool downhill ride along the Casselman River, and is the last time we'll see the Casselman along the Great Allegheny Passage. Don't worry though - the downhills aren't too hard to ride back up if you're doing this as an out-and-back segment ride.
This trail segment is book-ended by two VERY trail-friendly towns, and features a tunnel, four river crossings... and DEER on the trail! Yep, you heard me - it was one of those once-in-a-blue-moon GoPro Awards-worthy captures of three deer running on the trail!
I hope this video inspires you to check out this trail segment if you haven't been on it yet... and if you have, keep an eye out for the deer!

Secrets Of The Trails - An Introduction

This is what Secrets Of The Trails is all about! This channel is my "video companion" to my blog-website SecretsOfTheTrails.com. The channel will feature videos based on the trails I feature on the website. It's not going to be anywhere near "daily" or "weekly", since my "day job" is unfortunately not recreational cycling. But I appreciate all who visit, please subscribe and look out for new co...
Nice video, with lots of information about the trail and the history of the area. I have ridden this section several times in all my years of riding rail trails and find this particular section the most remote of the entire GAP trail. I would imagine you find it that way also. I remember having to use the bypass around Pinkerton Horn, for many years, before they finally opened the tunnel in 2015. I have ridden every section of the GAP trail, from Pittsburgh to Cumberland in various stages in a few years. I have also ridden the C&O towpath, from Cumberland to Big Pool, near Fort Frederick in Maryland. I have the goal of continuing the ride to Washington DC to complete the entire journey. I have a camera that I wear while I am riding, filming my rides as I go along. I don't put any of my videos on TH-cam or any site, I just archive them to show to friends and family, so you probably won't see any of mine online. I remember a time, when the GAP trail wasn't completed yet, especially from Meyersdale to Cumberland, and areas near Pittsburgh, which didn't open until the early 2010's. Hope you enjoy your rides on all these trails.
Thanks! I agree that this segment seems to be the "most remote", but it's just so peaceful, I do love riding it frequently. I mentioned on the website post that accompanies this video, that I had filmed the Pinkerton Bypass but it was unusable. I'm planning on riding this segment early in the 2025 cycling season, and filming the bypass separately. When produced, it'll be added to the channel as a Trail Highlight, like a "video short." Best wishes, and enjoy your rides!
Howdy! We met you on the trail the day you were filming this, at the Continental Divide. I'm editing my own video from that day currently, which led me to your channel to see if you posted yours. Anyhow, you've got some great editing going on, and a really good overview of the trail and area. I appreciate you highlighting this wonderful trail!
Thanks! I appreciate your kind words! It looks like you do some excellent videography! I look forward to seeing more from your channel!
Enjoyed your professional documentary on this section of the trail. My hometown and a stones throw from getting on the trail. I highlighted the GAP weekly in The New Republic newspaper for over a decade, Tails From the Trail. Also a board member of the Meyersdale Area Historical Society and as a side note, in 1959 two friends and I were caught on the Salisbury Viaduct with an oncoming Steam train. We hugged a 55 gal drum barrel in an alcove as the train passed us by. In later years I wrote an unpublished short story, "Miracle at 100 Feet". Again, thank you for highlighting what I consider The Center of the Universe, Meyersdale and our pride, the GAP.
Thanks for your kind words! The Meyersdale trailhead is one of my favorites; I have often used it as a staging point for my rides. Glad to hear of your Salisbury Viaduct "great escape" from danger! Thanks to you and the rest of the Meyersdale Area Historical Society for your incredible work!
