Never saw this movie but I watched the documentary, "In The Wake of Assassins - The 1954 Assassination of Albert Patterson". It seems that every few decades good people put their lives on the line to upend dangerous mob corruption in small towns that are ignored by DA's. Albert Patterson was that person and a few decades later, Buford Pusser was another. I'm sure people might know of others that as of yet are unnoticed. One thing that I heard that the movie did not mention, was that John Patterson was an avowed segregationist (perhaps the worst) and that he used this as an effective method to defeat of all people George C. Wallace for the Governorship of Alabama. He could possible have gone down as one of the great governors of all-time if he had only embraced a racial policy similar to Big Jim Folsom, avoiding violence, hatred and deaths.

I live in Phenix City.

It's strange to drive around town today, and think this is my city's roots. Then to see some of the structures that still remain, remnants of those that don't. That river, and how many of those secrets from that time that it has helped keep quiet. It isn't much better as far as crime, however the PCPD isn't dirty anymore. Most of our problems surround narcotics like anywhere else.

To add to joeys comment. The people who escaped justice went on to cause problems in other places. The movie"walking tall" in a way is a spiritual successor to the phenix city story.

This was a great triumph for the people of Phenix City. My Grandfather had to work in the Manhatten Club because there were not many jobs to be had around here. My dad was 20 years old when this all happened (1954) and he grew up in Phenix City at the time the local thugs and police had its evil grip on the city. I heard all of the stories and they were mostly first hand. I do know that the corruption continued and that many people suffered at the hands of local thugs which were a part of the Russell County Sherrif Dept and the Phenix City Police Dept. My Grandmother's cousin Lamar Murphy (who was a long time Sherrif) allowed a lot of this stuff to go on too. I saw a lot of it first hand and this town is still corrupt from the Judges all the way down to local Law Enforcement. It is nothing like it was back then though and it is my opinion that power breeds corruption and many small towns are corrupt like this.
