The Tai people originated from the Yunnan province of China and established their kingdom on Khmer land. Why is Thai culture so similar to Khmer? Because the first Ayutthaya king, who was a Chinese merchant, married a Khmer princess in Lavo. He became the king and inherited Khmer culture, gathering Tai, Khmer, and Mon people for their new kingdom. At that time, the Lavo kingdom was just a vassal state of the Khmer Empire. When the Khmer Empire fell, they waged war against the central power in Angkor and emerged victorious. They kidnapped people from Yashodharapura city, including royal families, governors, scholars, and Brahmins, bringing them to the Ayutthaya kingdom. Some became slaves, while others supported the new kingdom, laying the strong foundations of Ayutthaya. In conclusion, Thai people today are not purely Tai ethnicity but mostly comprise Khmer and Mon ancestry. These new people are Thai, but some of their ancestors' blood is Khmer, Tai, and Mon, or a mix thereof. In essence, Thai culture has largely adapted Khmer culture, including art, alphabet, architecture, and dance. Can we say they were copied? The answer is no because at that time, the people of the two kingdoms were essentially the same. The difference is that Khmer remained Khmer, while Thai was a mixture of Khmer, Tai, and Mon.
Well that was more than a thousand years ago. You left out the hundreds of years that Cambodia was under Siam after that. Which cultural influence would have inspired what we have in modern times more? 🤔And this is when the Thai culture, which is indeed a largely mixed culture, then influenced Cambodia. Not All Thai people are of Dai blood either, there were many groups already living in the region now called Thailand, before the Khmer expansion and after. There were different peoples and cultures in both regions before the Khmer even became an entity called the Khmer. 🤨 Most of the culture in SEA we see today developed after the time period of the Khmer empire anyway. There is big influence from India, Pattani, Cham, Persia, China and so on. The old Khmer culture is largely forgotten, and further destroyed during your cultural genocide by communism. That is why many Khmer today have an inferiority complex, and try to claim Thai culture as their own. 😒 But this is silly, both cultures are a mix of similar cultures, same with the rest of SE Asia. All very similar, all with similar original influences. So just stop the nonsense. Develop what you have now and preserve whatever you can.
