Do you dream of retiring early? In this video I discuss what life is like for me having retired at 50 years old. This video is NOT about retiring at 50, nor is it about me and my personal circumstances, it is a philosophical conversation that provides reasons to view your own life a little differently, highlighting the dangers of overly investing in an imaginary future and why it's important to...

    Core body temperature should be the real test of any clothing in any conditions. Hypothermia and hyperthermia are the killers, getting wet isnt. People who wear wet suits are soaking wet but they arent freezing cold. Maybe we should be hiking in scuba gear 🤔😂

    Great advice, we waste time chasing after possessions too much, your health and time are the two most important things in life. Take a step back be greatful for what you have and as you say appreciate the simple things you probably didn't have time to notice before.

    I’m 57 too, and finished work at 53.5 during the pandemic, there were voluntary redundancies on offer including a lump sum incentive. So I used that to bridge the gap to 55 financially, and then used some of my pension money to invest in ISAs and a fixed term annuity, which give me some monthly income, without losing a penny of what is invested. Just like you, I live on less money but I’m rich in the most precious commodity, Time. All unavoidable bills total £500, got about £1k pcm for clothes, food, entertainment, unexpected bills etc. but just like you, every day is mine to do what I want with. No orders from work bosses, no orders from a Mrs either, no mortgage, just….. Freedom. I see a load of different mates for different hobbies and interests, but I’m also quite content to go walking with the lads dog, or else alone. Quite happy to be alone some days, after a lifetime of being drumbeated for school then work, always against the clock, always surrounded by pressure, and by Noise, I quite enjoy the silence, as Depeche Mode said. I even avoid crowded places these days, as I find I suffer from sensory overload to a degree, and it brings on anxiety. Just like you I had episodes of that in the workplace all through the 37 years there, due to noise and pressure and the clock. I too was Bluffing my way through my job, I felt like an Actor in a film or something, pretending to be so many things that I wasn’t, every day, unqualified to do the role, but I acted it. Faked it. I’m so relieved it’s over, and whilst I won’t have the things you mentioned, the lovely wife for permanent company, the big house, the flash car, the lovely hols abroad, I’m quite comfortable without any of those, got a nice enough home, a car which is eleven y o now which I love, health isn’t great but I feel being retired for the last four years has given me the best chance of improving some of that, the mental side as we said, and then physically due to more walks etc. and the time to go and do those things! Plenty of friends, family, small modest income as I said, and yes, as you say who knows how long each of us have got….. but I’m relieved they didn’t get to carry me out of the workplace in a box. I made it. I took my freedom. As you say it’s not possible for many people due to being married and the hols and nice cars and house etc…. To us these are just things, stuff, you can’t take them with you….. so, if freedom is an option, grab it. I have done, and whenever I peg it, I’ll be dying happy. I made it. 😊

    Retirement for me means a concept I never believed in, I stopped working for a boss and company at 29 after 4 years out of college. Started my own business and never looked back, did 5 years of deep sacrifice and unbelievable focus and hard work while others went drinking weekend whatever. I had two things then, family and my business. Became financial free at age 38, paid off mortgage and work when I want but I will never retire. It was never for the money but for independence and freedom, still till this day I g tapdancing to my office. I made my hobby my work and njoy it, who wants to be retired at 50 and do all that boring so called I am free stuff. So many entrepreneurs keep on working but not for the money, it gives them a purpose. Me too, I am topfit at 52 , take a nap at my office, can buy what I want but have no utility for expensive stuff or cars or wines, i mainly read all day and advice younger people, meet interesting folks and outsource the boring parts and when I want to stay at home or do sports or hobbies I do that. Best advice I was give when I was 25, life your life and not the expectations and fears of others. If you work for money at a job you will never be really free. Most people lead a mediocre balanced life because they choose to be like that. Many regret it when they are 80, some not and that is fine. I plan to keep on working and when all kids are gone do a lot of traveling and remote work with the wife. If I am given this time.

    I wish I had this video back when I was starting. I was so mad because I had great content but wasn't getting any attention. 1k was mission impossible. I was lucky when I found out I can boost my channel with initial subs just enough to start getting noticed. I got myself first couple of hundred subs for very low price (personally used Fame -Ster). After that my main channel gain a ton of organic traffic.

    One important ingredient with this type of jacket is that to drive the evaporation process, the wearer has to be active to a point that enough body heat is generated to enable the process to take place, the worse the weather, the more active you need to be to "pump" the moisture out. Were you giving your walk enough beans, or were you bimbling and stopping to film yourself every few minutes? I have used the buffalo jacket and montane extreme smock in similar conditions and I was only clammy and warm, certainly not wet and cold. The issue with jackets using this technology is you quickly overheat in them here in our predominantly humid UK climate where it doesn't often get cold enough to warrant wearing such a garment most of the time.

    Retiring at 56 after 34 yrs of nursing. Mostly critical care pediatrics. I'm in Florida. Found out I could get on Obamacare if I don't work at all. We live very simply. No debt. I've crunched the numbers several different ways and the main reason I was still working was for health insurance. Now that problem is solved. It feels surreal! I'm going to be a beach bum. For now .. I have a very curious mind and now I can study anything I want as deeply as I want. My interests are metaphysics, consciousness, spirituality, criminal justice, reading, cooking, walking, Scrabble,..No focus yet. Just want to be more present for my husband and family. I'm very thankful.

    Great video Eddy! As you know, we met during the pub crawl and you asked me what my channel was about. Technology. It has always been a passion of mine. I'm ~200 short of reaching 1000 subscribers. I have upgraded my equipment. I began using my iPhone to shoot everything but in the last year or so I changed to a DJI Osmo Pocket. I've overcame my fear of talking on camera. I edit my videos in Final Cut Pro. I too started off using iMovie. I use Canva to create eye-catching video thumbnails and I'm seeing results.

    Interesting video the Eddie, my hobby is model railways, would love to share it with people but feel like I would not be comfortable talking on the camera, that to me is a real skill

    • @Eddy-Hope
      @Eddy-Hope 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You can always record a prepared narrative (script) and use it over B-Roll of your models etc 👊🏻 that way you’re not talking to camera. I’ve struggled a lot with talking to camera but practice and practice and it does get easier

    • @LeeStewart
      @LeeStewart 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I too was scared of talking on camera, but I would ease it off by starting in your own environment. Then gradually start doing some outside in public like I did. When I met Eddy during the pub crawl I was bricking at the possibility of having to talk with him on camera, as he has way more subscribers than I do on his other channel 😂 But if he'd have asked me, I would've done it. It's like jumping into the deep end of swimming pool as a kid.

    • @LeeStewart
      @LeeStewart 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      And I forgot to mention, you can always create a script beforehand on your computer and if you're not comfortable talking on camera, pre-record something and use that as a voiceover to the video. I find that when I often fluff up my lines, I can cut those bits out.

    I find this video interesting and wonder why it doesn't match my own experience? I too was in the Lake District, we ascended ScaFell via Lord's Rake and then the West Wall Traverse. As the Traverse entered Deep Ghyll the weather turned as we had been anticipating and going up the narrow pipe we were totally sheltered from the raging storm but we could hear the wind howling above and the rain started to come down hard. At the summit, we could barely stand up, the wind was so strong and the rain was horizontal, visibility down to just a few feet. We followed a compass bearing to take us down in some of the most horrendous conditions I've hiked in, and after 2-3 hours we ended up at the Boot Inn, Eskdale near where our RV was parked up. Here we ordered some food and assessed the damage! I was wearing a brand new Paramo Velez Evolution Hybrid Smock and Velez adventure trousers with the Paramo Grid Technic baselayer. I had bought this gear just prior to the trip to test it out, having become steadily disillusioned by various Goretex products over the years. My wife still had a Goretex jacket and no waterproof trousers! I was still warm and almost bone dry bar a few damp bits where water had dribbled down from openings around the hood face area (bear in mind how strong the wind was and driving the rain, this was inevitable, I think). My wife on the other hand was drenched and freezing. Needless to say I have since bought her a set of Paramo gear as well! I will say that Paramo gear is not perfect. I find it quite heavy and overly warm for summer conditions and is relatively bulky to carry in a pack. But, I can't fault it's performance on that extremely wet and windy day. I am confused why your experience is so different to mine???

    Great tips. Litter for me is a major bug bear and not just in the countryside. I'll be doing it for the 23rd time tomorrow so I can suggest a few extra tips. No curry etc night before, nowt worse than needing to park it mid walk. Cover your feet in petroleum jelly to prevent blisters and reapply if needed during the walk. If you are struggling with the steep hills don't look up, it can be soul destroying, admire the scenery when you summit instead. Don't rest for too long as you will stiffen up. Enjoy!!!

    Maybe you were wearing too many layers underneath that didn't allow the moisture to escape? I would wear polypro underneath and maybe just the Brynje fishnet polypro, depending on how much insulation I felt I needed. I know Buffalo recommends wearing most of their stuff directly against the skin.

I'm married with no kids and earn enough to pay the bills whilst still being able to still save and entertain the wife. The bottomline is simple; I can always earn more money but I can't earn more time.

    Let’s not forget that goretex stops being breathable once the goretex garment is wet on the outside. So you end up with all your body moisture pooling on the inside of the jacket and becoming wet. Personally I have used both and found goretex near to useless. Paramo however has not let me down. The conditions that you had were worse than I have used mine in so I cannot compare in that way. However if you do start the get damp in the paramo it is designed to use body heat to carry on pushing the water outwards. The other fact is that a lot of mountain rescue use paramo so there must be a reason they trust it.

    Great video, especially talking about time as a currency. I'll be 48 at the end of this year and looking at retiring, like you it's health (anxiety, depression, being diagnosed with severe asthma at 47), my marriage being no more, losing friends young, one at 54 and another literally months after he retired! Life is a short precious thing and I'm planning on enjoying those last years! I'll be slightly different from yourself, my uncle has invited me over to Oz for a few months to help with some renovations on his house and when I return I'll be buying a motorhome and seeing all of Europe with my two dogs. Keep rocking
