John Singer Sargent: His Nomadic Life and Watercolors, Lecture, Part 2 by Jane M Mason
This second and final part of the lecture presents a closer look at watercolors of John Singer Sargent as he interprets water-from still water to raging torrents of water.
A noted technique of his, is starting with the middle value and working both to the lighter values as well as the darker values. This approach to watercolor was, and continues to be, unique among watercolorists. This technique is examined in this lecture.
Some of his personal brushstrokes, such as what I call his “eyelash” stroke, are discussed.
I encourage you to visit the museums that collect and preserve the work of John Singer Sargent.

How to Watercolor Dew Drops and Water Droplets
มุมมอง 1.5K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Realistic dew drops are impressive in a painting. They add that sense of freshness and realism that catches a viewer’s attention. As the brilliant photographer, Cartier-Bresson would say, it creates a “decisive moment”… a moment in which you can’t look away because you are compelled to see what will happen next. I take you step-by-step through the painting of the reflection, shadow, edge and “b...

มุมมอง 3656 ปีที่แล้ว
Don’t drag your arm across the wet paint on your painting. Use a mahl stick. (Also called a "painter's guide stick") Jane demonstrates how to protect a wet area in your painting from yourself as you drag your arm or your clothing across the surface. You can always make sure you hold your arm up in the air. But sometimes it's helpful to use a prop (like a roll of tape) to make sure your arm stay...
