Hidden Button Workshops
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 ม.ค. 2024
Hi I'm Mell an Australian Ceramicist located in the Hunter Valley NSW. I first fell in love with Ceramics while studying for my Fine Arts Degree at National Art School in Sydney. I loved it so much I extended my studies for an extra year graduation with Honours in 2013 with High Distinction in slip casting.
In 2018 I started my small business Hidden Button Workshops with the idea to run clay workshops. During this time until now I have been selling my work to local markets and running social macrame and clay workshops to the public.
I'm also married to Phil, have two beautiful girls and I'm a bit of a gym junky.
In 2022 we relocated from our Coastal home to our now half an acer farm house in the Hunter Valley to begin my dream of having my own studio where I can create, inspire and teach ceramics to others.

A Busy Week in the Studio: Yard Work, Workshops, and Kiln Firings
Join me for a busy and exhausting week in my studio! 🌿
This week, we've been hard at work in the yard, tackling our retaining wall project and creating a beautiful hanging planter box. Each Thursday morning, I run a workshop for an NDIS service, and this Saturday, I hosted another mug-making workshop in Newcastle. With three firings completed, I also attached handles and glazed some pieces on my temporary table in the studio.
The rain has finally stopped, and we're making great progress! Come along and see what we've been up to this week.
Highlights:
- Yard work and retaining wall progress
- Creating a feature hanging planter box
- Thursday NDIS workshop
- Saturday mug-making workshop in Newcastle
- Three firings in the kiln
- Attaching handles and glazing work
Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more updates on our studio journey!

Slab built mugs - Glazing mugs from my June mug making workshop
มุมมอง 129วันที่ผ่านมา
Join me in my studio as I spend two days glazing mugs from last month's mug making workshop! Watch the process unfold as I carefully glaze the inside of each mug first, allowing them to dry for 24 hours before glazing the outside. This method ensures a better glaze adherence, especially for thicker mugs. I use a beautiful matte white glaze from Keane Ceramics in Gosford, NSW, Australia. This mi...

This week has been packed with excitement in my studio! Join me as I unpack the bisque firing and get ready for not one, but two workshops. I'll be hosting a team-building workshop in the beautiful Hunter Valley and starting a 10-week series for a fantastic disability group. With school holidays in full swing, we're taking some time to head to the lake for family fun and a surprise activity for...

You and your hubby make a great team!
@joellackerman533 thank you. We have been together since we were 17. We definitely have our moments. Especially with renovating at the moment 😆
Rock'n and cleaning mugs. Yes!
@joellackerman533 it's the only way ☺️
Just went for a bike ride, it’s only 90 degrees here. We are praying for rain. Ha! You got me inspired to clean my studio. Thank you! Enjoy your new class. I’m looking forward to see how they do. Great idea with the visuals. Have a wonderful week🤗💕
@cherylbowman5036 thank you. I'm glad to inspire anyone when it comes to cleaning. It's crazy how dusty they get. Hope you enjoyed 😉
Ooo thank you! Just on time 🎉. I can’t say that making/attaching the handle is my favourite part of pottery 😅, but I’m going to try your methods, thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻💪💪
You are so welcome!
Hey Mel, I like the name of your pottery. It’s lovely to get to know you. I’m a potter in peachtree corners Georgia, USA. You are international now! I’m very excited for your new studio. It’s incredible! My husband and I just looked at some metal buildings for our studio. I’m currently teaching out of the dining room and garage. Looking forward to seeing the evolution of your space. I use to live in Tasmania when I was a kid. That was 52 years ago, I have very fond memories of Australia. I really just wanted to say It’s a pleasure watching you, your very natural in front of the camera and I Appreciate all you are sharing, the music is great too! Wishing you all the best!
Awww. Thanks so much. I never know who's going to watch my videos or who even cares, but I just want to share to other the love I have for Ceramics and also that if you have a dream just have a go at it. Thank you so much for your encouraging words and for your support. Mell x
Recently, I visited Your TH-cam channel and I found some problems. I think and believe that if you can fix that problem, your channel will grow very gradually. Then your channel possible to grow. So are you interested
You should do a sale car piece of white glaze for the tail kind of pieces
BTW, if you don't mind can you explain how you named your workshop in a video? Just curious
When I was at university, my signature was hiding a little handmade button on the inside/bottom of my mugs. A little Hidden Button.
Cute pup.
Thanks, his name is Huxley
keep up the good work
BTW, its funny how you say macrame. In U.S. we pronounce 'Mack-crow-may"...ha
I know it's a very Aussie way to pronounce it. 🤣
Ah...I see how the hat holder works.
Yes, I hang them on the wall so your hats don't drop out.
I’m so exited to follow you on creating the studio! And inspiring too! I need to reorganise mine, it’s a mess lol too much stuff too little space 🤪. I’m looking forward to see the whole process 😍
Hello from Albuquerque NM. Can you demonstrate the hat holder? I cant imagine how that works? Not heard of such a thing. Best of luck at the market!
Hi. Thank you. In my next weekly Vlog. I'll have a video of my setup at the market .That way, it will give you a better idea of how it works.
Hooray! Your hubby is kicking ass. Congrats
Thank you 😊
Thats what I call potter’s elbow 😂. How many times happened to me, after community studio I stopped by in a grocery store, and I noticed I’m covered in clay like a dirty person 🙈. What can we do? Potters life)). I loved to see the cups from March challenge finished and beautiful 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Sometimes, I have people staring at me at the shops than I get home, and I have clay all over my face.
Every mug is beautiful ❤❤
Soooo true! Eating out of my favorite handmade bowl as well!
Sometimes it’s amazing how ceramic people has to be so versatile 😊😊, even to handle a saw for macrame 👏👏💪💪, love your videos, thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you. I'm glad one person is enjoying them 😆. I love making macrame and teaching it. I'm glad I get to incorporate the two.
I’ve been making pottery for almost 30 years and I can’t believe I’ve never seen this way of casting. I can’t thank you enough this is going to be awesome!!!
Thank you. I found this technique while studying at Uni, and I know of only one other artist who does it. It is very unique but also very time-consuming 😊

Something a bit different, isn't it? I enjoyed making it 😊

Hello i have been given a 500gram of powder porcelian i want to make slip what other ingrediant would i need to mixed please tell me
It all depends on what porcelain dry weight it is. There are different ways to make slip. But I do follow the mixing guide lines from Keane Ceramics website keaneceramics.com.au/products/keane-clay-ime-3-slip-powder-25kg Hope this helps. Unfortunately, making your own slip takes a bit of practice. Let me know if you have any other questions. X
