Tales from the Great Divide - History of the GDT & GDTA
Tales from the Great Divide: In this 90- minute illustrated presentation recorded on October 24, 2024, Dr. Jenny Feick covers six decades of the Great Divide Trail and GDT Association history. She explains the origins of the Great Divide Trail concept in the late 1960s and the first GDT proposals. She then describes Project: Great Divide Trails, which took place in 1974, and that kick-started action to make the GDT a reality. She discusses the early history of the Great Divide Trail Association, reveals why the group went dormant in the late 1980s, and tells how it was resurrected to become a vibrant, successful organization. She explores recent challenges and historically significant successes for the GDT and the GDTA, and issues a challenge for the future of Canada’s GDT.

Sadly, wolves are being persecuted again. There's a "wolf trap contest" by the Alberta Trappers Association.
Stunning scenery and a wonderful adventure. Certainly something in my to do list! 😻😊
like first..good luck..
I loved this presentation. I've been using my iphone to take photos of wildflowers and using it to help identify this, but this cleared up quite a few of my questions. Really appreciate it
Well done presentation.👍 look forward to the rest of the series.
I don’t find the video of the bear encounter that you mentioned is linked to this video.
Hey! I just posted the video in the description.
Hg
Thanks for the webinar. I'm preparing for a 2026 GDT attempt. Two questions. If I bring an Ursack, how would you secure it when there are no trees or bear boxes? Are there campsites on the GDT where this is the case?
All sites along the official GDT have adequate trees or bear lockers. On some of the alternates there will be sections fully above treelined and without bear lockers, in this instance scent reduction is essential. To learn more on scent reduction check out our video on Wildlife and Lightning!
@@greatdividetrailassociation Thanks for your answer. I did watch the other webinar and that one gave me some good tips and insight on how to decrease food smells.
loved the presentation, sorry to have missed the live event. Also loved the photo at Pulsatilla Pass at the beginning. We stopped there and a 1 hour lunch. So beautiful.
If this is information they are looking for, they should not be on trail!
We are pretty fortunate to have people travel from all over the world to experience the GDT, many of these places don't have the same large mammals that we have in the Canadian Rockies. On the flip side they may have lots of other animals that are a lot smaller and or poisonous. The second part of our Mission Statement is: Educate the public about the Great Divide Trail, and promote and encourage its use in a manner consistent with the conservation and preservation of the scenic and wilderness value of the Rocky Mountains of Canada. We acknowledge that everyone has to start somewhere, and we want to foster a good relationship with the wonderful experience of hiking. Part of this is providing hikers with as many resources as possible, no matter if they are looking for their first day hike or an FKT.
@greatdividetrailassociation So, they aren't from here, don't have the same wildlife, but are smaller and poisonous??? Put them on-trail, cause they are not from here...yep, makes no sense. Ohhh, wait, sorry, this is your wY to educate them, at Canadian citizens tax dollars. These people you are sending into the land of Grizzlies...do they have your personal phone number???
Yes a jeep can make it to Bastille bridge at around 70 ish km down walker creek, i drove the road multi times in 2023
Gosh I am going to be annoying and ask a question that's probably already been asked😬 At 7:30 when I log, does it just automatically put me in the queue? or does it change and I am prompted with "enter the queue?" Thanks again!
Hey Woody, when you go to the reservation site it will automatically put you in the queue.
Frickin' awesome summary! I'm looking at checking out sections of the GDT this year and this is giving me some great ideas and goals
Extremely helpful video. I was thinking perhaps the GDTA could send out a “cheat sheet” of all the different access points you need in order to select your campground in each national park. It would definitely help people navigate the site on booking day that’s for sure.
Great suggestion! We will work to add this to our pages. We probably won't get it to for this hiking season but feel free to reach out if you have specific questions
This was very helpful! ...Quick question: Where is the link for the downloadable map files for Gaia/Watch? Thanks again!
Wondering the same, I was unable to find it on their website.
If you go to the maps page on our site and "full screen" the Google maps option at the top it will redirect you to Google Maps. From there clicking on the 3 dots will allow you to download the KML.
@@greatdividetrailassociation THANKS!!
Hey! will you all be doing a webinar for next season 2024? Thanks!
Hey! Sorry this comment slipped through the cracks. Yes we have webinars every year. They are all on our channel, and you can find upcoming ones through our social media channels and our newsletter.
Thank you for posting this. This is very helpful.
Great suggestions! Thank you.
Thanks you for posting this. It was very useful.
Do you have the ability provide this resource as a PDF?

Planning on starting the trail on July 9th. So excited ! The GDTA has been insturmental in planning and prep. You guys are incredible !
Can you please share the link to the snow pillow depths in British Columbia?
Thank you for posting this on the TH-cam channel!!
Comment about coffee - after trying a number of freeze dried coffee designed for backpacking, ended up getting a jar of Nescafe. There are a number of flavours and you can control the strength a lot better than using pre-packaged packets. Additionally, a box of 8 packets of Alpine Start will run $14 at MEC - I had to use 2 packets for a single cup. An entire jar of Nescafe will run under $10 for 100g.
Side note - ditch the glass jar, put the contents into a freezer ziploc
For exit out of Kakwa, my hiking partner and I are planning to pick up Via Rail in Dome Creek. Via picks up 6 days a week there - 3 of which goes to Jasper. From Jasper you can book a shuttle with Brewsrer Express to take you back to Calgary (or other destinations along their route).
Good tip! Are you walking our the Walker Creek FSR?
@@greatdividetrailassociation So far yes. From what I was able to gather, roughly 5-6 KMs before the highway, there is a side trail or dirt road that turns right and follows the river to Dome Creek. We plan on taking a 0 at Kakwa Lake then taking 4 days to get the Dome Creek with random camping where we can. Monday morning we grab the train and crash in Jasper.
Costs (as of last time I checked): Via - $74 to Jasper Brewster Express - $183/person to Calgary
Wow that's a big food carry! There are some spots to camp along the Walker Creek FSR.
@@greatdividetrailassociation Awesome... the itinerary spreadsheets mentioned the random camping along Walter Creek FSR as well.
Good info. Audio quality during Ms. Sampson's presentation.was poor.
Hey Peter, yeah it was super unfortunate. We have since fixed the problem for future webinars.
This looks amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Interesting to see what volunteers have to do for others to enjoy the trail. Another good video. Thanks to everybody who volunteers to do this work.
Great work.
Wow man, Awesome! You got some cahoona's LOL. Why would you go sooo late? Permit issues? Whatever, you are an inspiration. To say I want to sit down over drinks and pick your brain would be an understatement. Thanks for sharing your Dash!!! - Davey.
Thanks to all you dedicated volunteers!
thank you SO much to all the volunteers who helped build, maintain and mark the trail. we had the experience of a lifetime on the GDT this summer and it would not have possible without all your hard work!
Thanks to everybody who's worked on this section of the trail. Looking forward to experiencing all of Section "D" later this month.
Great webinar! Very helpful in planning for my GDT 23 hike, hope you all put this together again for next year.
Thank you for sharing, appreciated hearing the differences between North & South America long distance trails. 🥾 😎
??????? ?
What in the 1990's is going on here 😳
Thank you all so much, appreciate the information & combined experience. Have been to many areas & still learned so much for linking it all together. 😎
Wow way too big for 7 days.
what would be the best route if hiking with a dog. (I have someone picking up my dog for section E)
Almost the entire trail is dog-friendly. Are you asking about a specific section or about alternates?
This was amazing. Thank you!
You're so welcome!
You're welcome!! Glad you enjoyed :)
This was excellent. Great information! Thank you :)
Beautiful shots.
The Six Moon Designs Fusion is a great pack. It's too bad they don't make it anymore. The suspension design is amazing and absolutely worth the weight penalty compared to ultralight packs if you need to carry lots of water or food between resupply.
Can Charlene please tell me about the bear painting behind her? Thanks! :D
I wanted to add one clarification to something I presented about PLBs. Newer units with RLS capability are able to receive a confirmation of receipt. They still don’t have two-way capabilities, but you’ll at least know the message got through
This is awesome, thank you guys so much! Quick question for Austin, regarding loading GDT maps onto watch, curious about which watch/app you were using?
Hey! I was using a Suunto 9 Baro but I didn't load the track onto my watch. I just used Guthook/Far Out for navigation and then used my watch to track my days. A buddy of mine used a Coros but I can't remember the model--he loaded the entire track onto his watch but didn't end up using it that much. So much of the trail is well marked that he didn't find it very useful and it drained his battery much quicker.
Great session and great to see so many Durston Gearheads in attendance!
Thank you great information.
