Sold my golf from 2008 with 360.000 km and the engine was still running excellent. Replaced the chain and tensioners once when it started to rattle. No issue. A belt needs replacement too.

This looks like the exact engine I just bought from someone on OfferUp. Comes with all the garb to get it going minus the exhaust expansion chamber. If that's what it's called on these engine. Silencer, muffler....? I don't know. My plan is to either put the motor on a bike or some kind of offroad toy. I haven't seen it done so that's my #1 motivation in all things indo really.

I wouldn´t take a VW Company car with an TSI engine for Free if my life depends on it. I´m only hearing problems about those engines and 99% its the timing chain.

What fault is it?

I know this is an old video but if anyone has this sound or you get it at cold start, it's the timing chain tensioner that's either failing or in this case, probably already failed. This is a known issue on early TSi engines, especially Scirocco's. The sound you can hear is called 'chain slap', where there is no tension in the chain anymore and the chain is slapping the casing. Any over exertion on the engine like hard acceleration or even driving uphill if it's really bad can cause the chain to jump teeth and throw the engine timing out of alignment, destroying the valves or even the whole engine depending on the severity. So if you start your car and you start hearing this best to turn it off and arrange to get it to a mechanic asap. Just changing the tensioner and chain is expensive enough, but throw in valve replacement and you're talking big, big money, full engine tear-down. If it jumps enough teeth the out of time valves might even punch through your piston heads and seize the engine. Best to wait til after dark, tow it to a field and torch it, report it stolen and claim the insurance, lol. I believe there's been 3 redesigns of the tensioner with pre-2012 engines having the original troublesome component. I have a '09 Rocco 2.0 TSi and decided to have the tensioner replaced before it caused issues, thankfully I had a friend who was a tech for VW and did it in a weekend for me for £350 plus parts. I just couldn't comfortably drive the car knowing it was a timebomb that could go off any second. Love the car, still have it.
