    • @nullptrerror1953

      I personally think this is quite a far view already but I set it to be lower because if I set it too high the far plane would start clipping the terrain. Although in all due honesty, I don't really have a good answer to why I set the render distance to the value it currently is.

    Ok the word infinite is interesting but the terrain itself is bland, lifeless, hollow & dull. It needs an overhaul to be worth catching eye. Sorry if I'm being too critical but that's how I thought at first. I'm open for your side of story and I wish to know how much work is done to make this happen? By the way, good job & keep it up!

    • @nullptrerror1953
      @nullptrerror1953 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for the criticism, when you say hollow and dull, what suggestions do you have for making it less uninteresting? I mostly did this as an experiment to see what 3D perlin noise would look like and how I could extend it to an infinite world and I also tried to liven things up with trees but admittedly there isn't much else. But yeah, it is kind of difficult to make procedurally generated stuff feel alive and and unique without a decent amount of effort. Anyway, most of the effort I put into the project probably actually went into optimizing the rendering of the terrain and I didn't think too much about the world generation. When I was initially thinking about this project I was kind of thinking about biomes (like deserts, tundras and jungles?) but I'm not sure how much effort that would be to implement considering I kind of want to move onto other projects but I might reuse the code from this project and extend it to be something more in the future. Anyway, thanks for the feedback :)

    • @RationalSlave

      @@nullptrerror1953 To make things liven up you can add different seasons, weather system, storms, hurricanes. Particles that float around as dust. Birds in the sky. Animals, insects on land. Fishes in the water. So many things to brainstorm..

    • @nullptrerror1953
      @nullptrerror1953 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RationalSlave very interesting ideas. I'll look into those ideas for the future - my current idea for how to use this code is to make a game where you fly an airplane over this world which might make some of the more subtle details not very noticable/practical though if I want to make something where you see the terrain up close (like a survival game?) Those seem like very good ideas. Thanks for the suggestions! :)

If you want OpenGL resources here are some very good resources: learnopengl.com/ - learnopengl, this website covers a lot of basics and some cool advanced stuff, very useful th-cam.com/video/W3gAzLwfIP0/w-d-xo.html - The Cherno's OpenGL tutorials are pretty good docs.gl/ - this is a documentation website for various OpenGL functions, very useful Anyway, I hope you found this helpful.

      This might not be the best explanation and I encourage you to check out the links to some helpful youtube videos. The camera has a few properties: x position, z position, z_near, z_far and the FOV. Essentially I just had a texture that I pixel values to. The sky was the top half of the texture and the ground was the bottom half. You could then go through each pixel and figure out how far it was from the camera. If it is close to the horizon, then it is farther away and how far it is in the z direction could be calculated with the following equation: depth = ((y coordinate in screen space) - (wherever the horizon is, in this case it is the middle of the screen)) / (how much of the screen the ground will take up) z = (z_far - z_near) / depth + z_near Of course, notice that as we get closer to the horizon the farther away in the z direction we get as depth gets smaller and z gets bigger. We then try to figure out where the x coordinate that we are sampling from should be. This can be done by the following: We figure out what the x position of the pixel is on the screen is. We can figure out the x position in world space by using our z coordinate in world space and figuring out where the edge of the FOV for the camera is: x_left = z * sin(-FOV / 2) x_right = z * sin(FOV / 2) x_left would be the far left of the screen and x_right would be the far right of the screen. We can then linearly interpolate between these for each pixel which would lead to the x value for each pixel being x = x_left + (x_right - x_left) * screen_x / screen_width You can then rotate this with a rotation matrix to match the camera rotation and then translate it to the camera's respective position to create camera rotation and movement. To create the "road" effect in the video I just took the fractional part of the x and z coordinate and checked if they were within a certain range (example being the fractional part for both are either less than 0.2 or greater than 0.8) I might have made some mistakes in the explanation, but this was how I think I could best describe how I implemented it, if you want clarification let me know and I've also linked some helpful videos that helped me understand how to create a mode 7 graphics style effect. Here are some helpful videos that I referenced when doing this that probably explained it better than I could: th-cam.com/video/D0MPYZYe40E/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUPbW9kZSA3IGdyYXBoaWNz th-cam.com/video/ybLZyY655iY/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUPbW9kZSA3IGdyYXBoaWNz They don't use SDL but you should be able to still apply the logic.

    Lua's also used in WoW, wireshark, vlc and rainmeter as I recall. I actually like it a lot more than python, ruby or javascript. If I had my way I would have preferred replacing javascript with Lua. LuaJIT is also one of the cutting-edge tracing JIT compilers out there on par with V8 that's used in node.js and it's mainly the work of one man.

      In my opinion, there are some quirks with lua that were a little strange to me (arrays start at 1 and you have to explicitly declare a variable as "local") but I still think it is a good language.
