What do i need to study fix computers like this ?
@billionairepodcast Well, electronics and patience. Just start with small projects to get good at soldering and desoldering, then you get schematics and ask around for advice. People are friendly in the retro community
Yes, and to add Rudy’s advice, watch TH-cam videos 😉. There’s great channels like @RudysRetroIntel, @Adriansdigitalbasement, @TheRetrochannel (to name a few)you really can learn a lot. And, yes, patience, a ton 🙂

Hi, there is a program to enter to test memory mode directly? The function keys are not working
Hello ! AFAIK, you need the function key to enter the memory test 😩. The XE goes automatically in memory test only if during the startup “see” there’s bad ram. You would need a test cart, or maybe a boot disk. Had you tried to remove the keyboard and clean the contact? I solved the “function keys not working” problem cleaning the connector then using a pencil on the Mylar connector traces to make them more conductive.

tanta roba! Ma quindi potresti programmarmi dei chip contenenti ad esempio la rom caratteri del vic1001? ne ho alcune di ricambio che mi feci fare da un venditore su ebay, ma se so che puoi farmele pure tu allora sto pure più tranquillo!
Grazie! Si, nel caso posso programmartela; ci andrebbe una eprom 27C64 (penso) e un adattatore, perchè le eprom originali erano 2364 e quelle sono troppo vecchie 😛

Thats funny. I had an 1040ste with a broken case at the exact same area! I used some polyester putty to fix it. ST machines are notorious for having issues with their floppy controllers. Most ebay listings showing photos of just the desktop are usually unable to load games.
Well, don't know if it's a weak point of the case or it was just the shipping - even if the STe was well packaged -. I knew that is working, BYW, luckilly 🙂
Careful and gentle cleaning with cotton bud and IPA can often restore fDD usability. Done 3 so far. : )
Just bought an 130xe motherboard for cheap. It had no power. The power switch was an aftermarket and it was problematic but even after changing it I still could find any 5v around the board. The electrolytic cap (470uf) near the switch was shorted. Got power after changing that but no image. Removed and tested Antic and GTIA and they worked on other machines. It turbed out the 4050 was dead. Finally the monitor picked up a video signal but still it didn't boot. Next stop the cpu....it was dead. Finally it worked and the RAM (non MT) was in good shape! Its the second machine I've encountered with so many issues. Previously only one XEGS had its ram, cpu, and rom gone bad. What those machines had in common is someone had meshed up with the power input. In the case of the xegs the emi coil was roasted! Anyway its always good to find mt ram inside a machine when it doesn't work. It narrows down the causes of failure! I was happy and disapointed to find a reliable ram brand inside that board. I knew I had an extensive repair of multiple failures in front of me.

@@mondo8bit Usually Atari 8bit machines don't fail that bad. Its always a "human hand" meshing with something that creates a mayhem. Great video and clean work. I also use a hand pump to desolder ICs with 100% success. The key is "patience"! Can't wait for the second part.

Nice reparir. Good job. I have a questions because i found me Atari 130xe but when i try to use it, the memory test show me blocks with error. How i can determinate what is failing? Is better change all the ram? Thanks for your help
Thank you! About your 130XE: the memory test actually shows only the first 64K memory bank (in the newer 130XEs, there's a new rom, the C300717, that shows also the extended ram, in form of four bigger bars, but I still haven't see one from real). If the ram are MT branded, yes, I would change them all. If not, you could try to change the first 8 chips, put sockets, then check for which one is gone. Let me know... 🙂

The blue text in the file browser is caused by a bug in the file browser. It is a consequence of having a machine that has the earlier Kernal ROM version. If you upgrade the ROM then it will fix it.
