Looking good. Keep the Island videos coming!
Ok at 6 minutes in you've complicated the heck out of a simple set up kayak. Don't get me wrong you've got some great mods but it's a lot to take in.
Ok I've watched the video but half of what you talked about wasn't on camera. 😮
Nice sailing Mark. You were scooting right along once you turned downwind. Thanks for sharing.
Looks like a fun day!
Looking good! Keep the TI videos coming! ⛵⛵⛵

Hi Mark, is the dodger you're using designed for the TI or is it a modified Adventure Island dodger? Do you find it worthwhile to have as it looks like it did stop a couple of good splashes? And thanks for the nice video, you have a very interesting setup.
Hi the dodger fits both TI and AI but they have different mounting points this was the first sail with it so good so far Thank you for your interest
Love Tandem Island content!
Thanks James
Looking great! Keep the TI videos coming!
Nice sail
Hi, great setup where can I buy a boat I am from South Africa
Hi mate I am from Australia but if you find a Hobie dealer in South Africa Thanks Mark
Hi Thomas the flex mast is a big problem with jibs but because spinnaker are used down wind the flex in the mast doesn’t matter. My brother has got a jib on his Ti he filled the mast with foam to stop the flex but we haven’t tried it out yet . Mark
Mark, I've tried a furling jib twice now, once with the Hobie mast spinnaker top and the second time a pipe cross where the forward pipe attached to the jib and the sides attached to shrouds that went to the ama's. The problem that I kept having was the flexibility of the mast and the aka's. In light winds the jib worked fine In heavy winds the jib would just shake like crazy because I couldn't get the forestay tight enough and it would actually slow the boat down. Do you experience this?
i love it‼️
Wet ride. Motor looks great. Keep the TI videos coming!⛵⛵⛵
Thanks James all ways supportive
Hey Mark great video looks like you are really moving !! cheers
Thanks for watching the hobie so much fun Cheers

Hey James thanks for your support Cheers Mark 😀
happy birthday to my favourite youtuber!!!
A few years ago, I did something similar with the spinnaker on my Hobie AI: th-cam.com/video/7I6PNaX_ze0/w-d-xo.html However, I've since found it much more useful to fly a furling jib, rather than the spinnaker. I find that downwind, the jib is almost as effective as the spinnaker, and at every other point of sail, the jib wins, hands down. Here is a video of my jib setup (this video shows an aluminum mast for the jib, which I've since replaced with carbon fiber): th-cam.com/video/rwNUI6AXudo/w-d-xo.html IMHO, there are a few keys to making a jib work on an AI or TI: 1) An aluminum or carbon fiber mast is necessary for the jib. A lot of people try using a wire or flexible mast (e.g., PVC pipe), and in my experience, those give very poor results, as they cannot hold the required sail shape 2) A custom bowsprit is needed. This is used to put the jib at enough of an angle to generate some lift; otherwise the jib will tend to push the nose down, and you will not gain much speed, while putting a lot of extra strain in the boat 3) I'd strongly recommend getting a quality continuous furler (Ronstan makes a good small one that is not too outrageously expensive) 4) A custom mast topper is absolutely essential (mine is made from PVC pipe, so it does not need to be anything expensive)
Each to his own I prefer the spinnaker thanks for sharing what you have done Cheers
Forgot to mention that I use the same Ronstan furler that Mark uses in this video, and I find that it works great.
I have an older Hobie AI, and I've added a furling jib (and have also experimented with a furling spinnaker, like yours). Under optimal conditions, I can do a steady 8 mph and max out at about 10 mph, but it's a white knuckle experience at those speeds. Anyways, great video!
Thanks for your comment spinnaker are great fun Regards Mark
Speedster
Hey Mark, just seeing what thrust is on your electric motor and if it works well with it. I’ve got an older ai single seat and was looking for something similar?
Hi Cameron the motor is 44 lbs it’s ok but knot brilliant it’s clean to cart around and cheaper than petrol about 1.5 hr run time on 50 amp hour battery hope this helps Regards Mark
looked like a perfect day for sailing, good wind and no waves. how much would you say the Spinnaker helped speed wise?
Yer good day I would say on average about 4km/h.
are those the wind or travel speed shown? 16 km/h in light winds is not bad, was probably from a strong bit of wind.
Thanks for your interest 16km/h was a gust of wind because 18km/h is the fastest I have been so far.
👍🍺
Hi Mark, Thankyou for sharing this as this is a brilliant setup. I hope you can answer a couple of questions for me please. 1. Are your Top and Bottom Furlers Harken or Ronstan units?? 2. Whereabouts in Brisbane did you get your Torsion Rope built and too what length?? Once again many Thanks for this setup, Cheers, Richard.
Thanks for your interest Richard I just got the Ronstan because it was the cheapest online at boating warehouse the torsion rope from sailmaker I got mine from Manders sails at Underwood length about 5.4 easy to cut with hacksaw hope this helps Mark
Good on ya Mark keep the videos coming
Thank you
Hey James thank you I have a video on TH-cam explaining the spinnaker the spinnaker in the video is a standard hobie ti spinnaker Thanks Mark
Well done. Had a spinnaker for my TI but sold it with the boat. Now without a spinnaker with my new TI. Always found the batten was getting messed up with the back stay. Hobie now has an extension for the mast topper but figure it still would interfere. I see what you did by cutting the battan. Did the cut in the batten impact sailing performance? Would appreciate links to the torsion rope and continuous reefer parts. Thanks.
Hi James cutting the batten has not effected sailing performance I spoke to a sailmaker before I cut the batten. The endless fuller I bought online from a site called Boating Central the torsion rope you can get for sailmaker. Hope this helps Mark
James also if you get a new spinnaker from a sailmaker they can design it without a torsion rope.
Looking good. Keep the videos coming! Please explain the roller reefing set up for your fore sail (standard Hobie Spinnaker?).
차분하고 자세하고 친절한 설명 대단히 감사합니다
Those screecher’s have a very narrow window of operation. Sometimes there a waste of time.
Who cares if you are having fun? Versatility is this crafts middle name. Great sailing OP.
Really like the way you’ve rigged that spinnaker.
Thanks you and thank for watching
I tried a Tandem Island once, sat in the rear seat like you, found that the hull vibrated and flexed with every wave, did you put weight in the front seat?
I always sit in back seat have not had those issues maybe it was the old design I think it was 2015 plus new design.
@@sailingmark51 It was the older model, maybe they ve improved it since, thnx
Good stuff! Keep the videos coming
Mark, Awesome video and set up. If you don’t mind me asking, how did you do the course and speed overlay? Regards
Hi Tony thank you for your interest I use GoPro black 5 with gps and the GoPro Quik app to get that overlay hope this helps
@@sailingmark51 Thanks Mark, unfortunately all the GoPro’s after the 5 don’t work with the gopro Quik app anymore. I’ll have to use another software package. Great job though on your part and thank you again for the reply.
Sorry, to clarify, all the GoPro’s work with the Quik app just not for overlays except the gopro 5.
This might help in the Quik app edit feature is a logo that says sticker click on it and it should give you speed overlay also when recording make sure your camera gps is on hope this helps
@@sailingmark51 Mark, awesome thank you. Appears the advice I received about only working on the gopro 5 was bogus! Do you know if you can change the speed from kph to knots?
Absolute brilliant ❤. The best setup I have seen 👌. Well done mate. Very well done in deed. Questions.... What electric motor you use there? Where did you buy all the jib hardware? Any advice very much appreciated 👍. Greetings from Spain 🇪🇸
Thank you 😊
The back stay has always been problematic....needing to furrel the sail on each tack.... I cut the tip down on my earlier TI to make tacking easier. Ended up moving away from the spinnaker and back stay all together to keep it simple.
Hi James have work with this system for about a year now works well.
Looks like a blast!!!!
Great sailing.
Thanks Tom I have watched a lot of your great weta trimaran videos
Sorry I just asked you how it all attaches up top but this explains it all. Would it all work on a 2014 single seat Adventure Island. Also would it be ok with a small jib up wind.....or would I need to add shrouds. Having a sail up front makes the boat looks so good. Thanks Mark.
Hi John for a jib to work upwind you need to have the forstay tight enough mast is to flexible and centre board to far back. Spinnaker/ reacher will work on adventure island hobie make a spinnaker for it .Adding shrouds would have to be attached to mast about 1 metre down from the top of the mast which would stop it from furling hope this helps
Just wanted to ask....you are not using the Hobie system with a bag on the trampoline but instead a roller furler on the bow. Does this attach to the Hobie mast head swivel and if so is there another swivel at the top. I think this looks like a really good and much less complex system. Also would you dare to use this system upwind or would it put too much strain on the foot of the mast etc. I see you are using it downwind ....is this to be on the safe side and to not stress the mast.
What equipment are you using to get your speed and heading on the video?
Hi Tyler thank for your interest it is a GoPro 5 black with gps with the GoPro app Quik
@@sailingmark51 Thank you!
Correct results. 10km/h is the end of the line for a Hobbie Tandem Island. Ridiculous.
Nice setup, do you have any links to the parts used?
Hi James thanks for your interest a hobie dealer sail maker and chandlery should help.
Furling kit seems so much neater than having the sock thingy ( wording shows I’m just new to the spinnaker )!
Looking good! Keep the TI videos coming!⛵⛵⛵⛵
Where does your spinnaker go after using it cause couldn’t see the sock 🧦 for it on the trampoline?
Hi Matt the spinnaker stays up on a furler see video on weta trimaran work the same way
@@sailingmark51 more to the point how does it attach to the top of the mast (allowing for the mast to roll and furl as well)? Looking great though.
Hi John spinnaker attached to mast with a standard hobie spinnaker mast fitting hope this helps
Keep the TI videos coming! Like to see how you set up the roller reefing jib.
Hi James thanks for your interest in my furling spinnaker Because it stays up all the time while sailing the first issue I had to solve was the spinnaker halyard/backstay Fixed this issue by cutting the batten that catches about 475mm from the top and rejoining with plastic tube so it can flex The batten can flick under the backstay when tackling The furler is a endless rope furler as used on weta tri The spinnaker is the hobie ti spinnaker To stop it from flapping in strong winds I used a torsion rope see videos on top down furling Because I sail by myself most of the time this system works well Hope this helps James
Fantastic... Where did you get that??? Many thanks 😊 🙏
It’s a hobie AI spinnaker set up on a endless rope furler once setup stays up while sailing . On top of mast same as hobie spinnaker setup halyard and back stay . The large batten catch on halyard/back stay to solve this the batten is cut about 450 mm from top then rejoin with plastic hose . Allowing the mainsail to fold under stay when tackling Thanks for your interest Thanks mark
I’d like to see a walk around of how you have that rigged.
@@maxwellmark Hi thank you for your interest will try to do a walk around video soon
To fun, one have to do fun. Great video!
