Welcome to our channel. This channel will document the entire build process as we transform our 1950's bungalow into a 2 story house with loft room and extension. We are not builders and only have limited experience renovating houses. We believe there is no other channel out there like this, that shows the full transformation from start to finish. We will be adding a second floor using steels and possibly underpinning and then using timber frame and trusses to create a second floor.
Bungalow to House SELF BUILD - Battening walls and ROOFING with recycled plastic slate effect tile -
This video will cover the battening and concrete render boarding of the outer shell of the timber frame house and also cover tiling the roof with a recycled plastic effect tile called Envirotile. A revolutionary system that makes tiling easy and stress free. They are light, can be cut with a jig saw, and interlock into place. For some that has never battened, gauged or laid a roof before, it couldn't have been easier!

Hey everyone, Sorry its been so long !!! I am still alive, not yet bankrupt and we have in fact moved into the house ! It was a long slog for the family and getting it finished was priority over TH-cam videos. But.... I sit in my office now looking around and cant believe this room was in fact once just a timber shell. I hope you find this interesting and please stay tuned for the rest of the v...

Hi everyone. Sorry about the delays between videos, I have alot of work still to do on the house. Its been a year and I'm finally fully plastered upstairs !!!! This video will focus on the front timber frame walls that can now be built as we have the trusses up on the wall plates. It also covers the tyvek membrane being fitted and the timber sealing tape used around the window frames. #timberfr...

Here is the video everyone has been waiting for.... THE huge ROOF TRUSSES arrive on site. This video shows how we went about lifting the trusses onto the wall plate WITHOUT ANY CRANE. We used a small Hiab to lift them to the 1st floor, however lifting onto the wall plates was done the good old fashioned way !!!! Ropes and giant ROCKS as ballast!!! it worked a treat and could not have gone any b...
Detached Bungalow to Detached House Renovation - BUILDING THE FRONT RIGHT BEDROOM WALL.
มุมมอง 2.3Kปีที่แล้ว
The next stage once the front steel was in, was to build the front right bedroom wall. I was not able to build the entire front wall yet, as the trusses were arriving and we would need to lift them through the front of the second floor to store the trusses upstairs until we could lift them manually onto the wall plate. This video shows the front right bedroom wall being built from start to fini...
Detached Bungalow to Detached House Renovation - BUILDING THE FLOOR & WALL PLATE FIXING TO STEEL

This video will show the process of building a 3 ply beam for use above the windows and openings. We also cover putting in the front floor and fixing a wall plate to the front steel ready to take the front walls. The front walls and floor joists were put in at a later date to the rest of the walls and floors as the front steel was an extra due to a dodgy downstairs wall. The plan originally was...

This is a short video showing the steels being lifted into place and the front wall foundation being poured. The plan originally was to have just 3 steels however the front wall was not very stable and i wasn't happy with a the pier in the middle supporting the flitch beam. Ant at I-plans got the new steel calculated in no time and we got it ordered. It did mean annoyingly i couldn't build the ...
USING A LASER LEVEL TO LEVEL RSJ SPREADER PLATES - BUNGALOW TO HOUSE RENOVATION.
มุมมอง 412ปีที่แล้ว
This is a short video detailing how i measured the heights of the different walls around the bungalow and how i assessed the levels for the RSJ spreader plates. We did not use padstones, although both methods were spec'd, as we didn't want to have to remove tiles from the bathroom walls to fit them. The spreader plates could sit on top of the existing walls and were the same lengths as the pads...

I GUARANTEE THIS IS NOT ON TH-cam!!! In this video I begin the process of rebuilding the #bungalow to become a 3 storey home. This video focuses on the 9 x 2 wall plates that will be chemical fixed and mortared to the original bungalow walls. The lap joints were one of the harder parts of the build due to the sheer size of the 9x2s. When researching for this project I could not find anything re...

Awesome job you have very impressive skills. Thank you for sharing. I am doing almost the exact same project at the moment and will be taking the roof off the bungalow in the next 3 weeks. Your videos are inspirational and informative.
How exciting! This is exactly why I have documented it all to inspire and give confidence. Best of luck and if you have any questions please get in touch or leave a comment :)
Brilliant work dude. Was wondering where you’d gone 😊 hope all well lad
Haha still here just had to get it finished lol. Thanks for watching matey
Great Video's Mate, Could you let me know what length and width the bungalow is and the pitch of the Attic Trusts are, Thanks, Look to do a similar job on my Bungalow ,
Hello mate. 3250 mm high 7320 wide and pitch of 39.3 degrees. They were at the maximum span you could have I believe with supporting walls underneath. Absolute no brainer though for getting the roof built quickly and effectively.
Came back to your channel recently and I'd have to say I'm well impressed with your ingenuity. Shows what can be achieved with a bit of thinking outside the box, hats off to you Carl
Thanks mate appreciate that because yes your right it did take thinking outside the box and a scaffolder with balls of steel, to overcome the huge risk of losing a truss ! Thanks for your support 🙏
@transformityourself how are you getting on, are you still documenting your progress? I’m about to start something very similar.
We have moved in now.. was rush rush so had no times for videos, i've recorded lots though still !!
Hello, we have recently moved into a bungalow and are looking to convert it with an additional floor much like yourself, I couldnt find you on Instagram as had some questions about certain things, do you have an email or DM of some kind I can make contact?
Carl_jarrett_singer. That’s my insta. No probs mate dm me any questions and I’ll try to help you 👍🏻👍🏻
Any ideas on doing this on a cavity wall? Was looking to do similar but wasn’t sure about closing the cavity where the air will flow or if I would have to put some air bricks
Hi Luke, good question the principles obviously exactly the same I would say if you aren’t rendered on the existing and can easily access the bridges then air bricks on the outer skin with a vermin mesh would be perfect but you’d need to have top and bottom ones I’d imagine on the original wall. Also I’m not at that stage in the videos yet but the new timber wall would also need to have a form of cavity which is done by batten and then render board over the top.
Curious as to what you’ve saved doing this yourself rather than getting lads in. 200k? I saw your progress on Facebook, you’ve smashed it mate.
Hello mate. My only regret is not putting it out to tender before I started so I really knew for sure. Unfortunately I’ll never know for sure now but I’d say Labour from start to finish would have been 200 k I reckon if I hadn’t done any of it at all. I would say though I definitely think I’ve doubled its price when completely finished 👍🏻 it’s an expensive build materials alone and my free labour. I’ll do a break down video one day.
Brilliant video mate
Cheers buddy hope your well ?
@@Transformityourself yeah bro all good this end, doin same been building stud walls for my car port. Not quite the same finesse as you’re doin but they’re looking good. You’ve done a Good tutorial here though mate
Cheers yeah trying to make it easier for people to attempt stuff themselves. Easier said than done a lot of the time lol. Glad your keeping busy
Amazing video thanks mate, I am having to do this now to move mine. Did you need to cut down your Hockey stick to get it to fit? Thanks
Hi mate thanks for watching and the comment. Yes I did I cut it down to suit the height that I wanted the meter box however you could just position the box in a position where you don’t have to cut it down alternatively just slide some of the stick into the box.
Amazing thanks so much for such a prompt reply. If only there were more people like you sharing how to do this stuff! @@Transformityourself
Sounds a good plan to use one company for the design and structural engineering. We had seperate companies who did not communicate and we ended up with some real challenges on detailing around the gable glass and vaulted ceiling. Our builder didn't finish it and we still have not really found a decent solution.
Thanks for watching 👍🏻 yes it did work well for us as halve way through I found that we needed another steel on the front as the wall was dodgy. I called the designer he agreed it needed a steel and got the calcs from his engineer directly. I guess it helps as they know how each other works. I would say though, my build couldn’t really have been any simpler from a design view. With vaulted ceilings etc I can’t say I wouldn’t have had the same problems as you. Also I was building it myself and not a builder so any issues I found or queried, I could deal with them directly before they became an issue.
This is proper grand designs stuff right here! Nice one Carl xx
Yeah it felt like it too at the time mental mate !! X
Great job brother but always keep safety first👍
Thanks mate. Yes, I was quite happy with the safety .
Was was also going to point out that in addition to the fantastic bit of kit the stabila extending level is albeit (ouch )expensive it's extending length reduces any discrepancy right down to nothing. Seeing you struggle with the leveling of the first top plate, up and down all on your Todd to get it perfectly level, you'd save your self stacks of time with a Bosch digital level (inclinometer),either the 1200 or the 600.... Audio beep when plumb or level to a tenth of a degree. The GIM60L also incorporates incorporates a laser beam which saves getting the separate laser level out and set up
That’s very interesting. I never need an excuse to spend money on tools however I’m at the stage of the build now where money is non existent 😂😂 the mrs would kill me. I’ll do some research on that though as it would be great when I build the extension eventually to have that. I found the extending stabila one very heavy to use lol
For someone with no previous construction industry background, youth achieved brilliant results. When when your finished I'm assuming you may take a career change into construction. A a good chippy with knowledge of extra trades can easily achieve 250 to 300 a day.
Thanks Chris. I have the likes of Robin Clevett, mr a builder and build with an and e, all channels on here to thank for being able to build this. Literally taught from TH-cam. However I agree my engineering background helps massively. Whether I could do it full time I don’t know. The trade get a lot of stick for their quotes nowadays however balancing time and pride of work against earnings must be very difficult. As it’s my house the pride and accuracy is there obviously however I really understand now the difficulty of balancing it all as a career. Everything takes FOREVER
Great Job brother, Im getting attic room trusses for our build from Pasquill and access is almost non existent so this video is perfect. The only difference is the trusses are 147kg but its a single story house so it gives me confidence that me and my mate both chippies can lift them into place.
Anything’s possible mate. Hardest bit was man handling them vertically from the delivery lorry ! Thanks for watching and great that it helped you, that’s the whole point of these videos !!!
Great work Carl!!
Thanks fella. How you doing ?
@@Transformityourselfall good pal, freezing outside so struggling to get motivated, but cracking on with car projects instead. You’re makin great progress- will be a spacious house when it’s done
Yeah it’s not exactly warm in the house either 😂😂😂
Haven't watched all the way through yet but great video thanks! This is exactly what we're planning on doing with our bungalow and there's hardly any decent videos showing the installation of the trusses. Well I say 'we' we're still getting quotes from various people to do the bulk of the work but that's another story (no pun intended...)
Hello Guys, Just a couple of questions, How did you keep the 2 long walls straight and plumb They need to be fastened and braced to the floor at least every 2.5 meters with a sturdy method to stop bowing of the long walls, meby you have interior walls to divide the rooms on this floor space, but you will have difficult time if the walls are not braced and secured, The first TRUSS that was placed should be located flush with the wall framing members, also its much easier to sheet this truss prior to hoisting into position, Also a spacer piece 38x150 could be fastened to each truss before its lifted into position, this is where there a ridge board would normaly be installed in a cut on site timber roof, Anyways i see that you fellas are not afraid to work and thats a good start, 😃😃
Hello mate. Yes there were no videos whatsoever so I thought I’d document it. Some of my earlier ones show the method of fixings the walls to the bungalow walls which again I couldn’t find anything anywhere. Will you have to underpin? I was lucky and didn’t need too
Great questions. To start with all walls front and sides were braces diagonally to 8x2s screwed into the floor joists. Basically every 3 m or so I think the other videos you can see them. What we then did once we had a few trusses in position we temporarily fixed then trusses in the place through the wall plate with 150 spas screws so the trusses then acted as braces if that makes sense. Once all the trusses we up I then we braces and plumbed up again where suitable. The spacer piece would have been a great idea and would set the main trusses, would have been no good for the mono trusses though obviously. I’m not sure what you mean by sheeting the first truss up? But we positioned the first truss 50 mm in from the inside wall edge to account for sole plate on the gable wall. I’m not sure we had to do this, I think this is mainly done for brick built gables ?
Amazing work Carl, I would be very proud of yourself and what you've achieved there ,great video😊
Thanks Dad :) x
Great bit of graft pal. Personally I would have had a few sheets of plywood laid down on the joisting. For the price of £100 it makes the job much easier, faster and safer. Look forward to watching more of the uploads! Keep up the good work.
Hi mate. Thank you. I’ll be honest it would have much more sense to do that especially as I temporarily laid osb over the new floor when I built that anyway. I guess I was just eager to get the roof off lol. Thanks for watching and your comment !
Where is that?
Essex, UK, my garage.
Nice video Carl, great detail and you answered a question ive been meaning to ask you ,about expansion and contraction , not being a builder i was wondering what effects and remedies are built in , now i know , keep up the great work , very proud of you , youve certainly got stuck in the last 11 months , you will need a holiday very soon 😊
Hi dad thanks :) yep everything has expansion to some extent and has to be accounted for x thanks for watching
Brilliant job mate, great idea building the upper floor out of timber. Gonna be a warm house. Great video to to watch pal
Thanks mate. There’s so much too it ! Insulation wise it’s maddness. You’ll see eventually lol. Thanks for watching again :)
Awesome work lad
Thanks mate great to see you back watching another video 👍🏻 hope your well.
Enjoying the journey mate, good to watch a project making progress!!
Wow awesome work mate, really good job!!
Thanks mate really behind where I want to be but everything takes so long !!!
Just finished a new floor on a 150m2 bungalow in Ireland. Large gable window & 3 dormers. 3000 slates. Materials prices there are mental.Good luck👍
I know mate lol. I’ve actually just finished the final soffit !! Videos are well behind ! Needless to say I’ve blown the budget twice and had to borrow more and that’s with me doing everything except render !!! Nothings cheap.
Send me some photos if you want.‘would be good to see it. My emails on the bio page of the channel
Music just a tad to high during your voice over. Amazing work though 🙌🏼
Thanks for the watch and the heads up fella ! Hope your well.
Top work mate, already looking forward to your progress
Thanks buddy. It’s getting there. The videos as you can imagine are well behind the actual progress. New video coming soon though 👍🏻
@@Transformityourself I’ve just built my son a house and appreciate the hard work that goes into it.

Good to see what you are up to. Just catching up on your series of videos as just found them. Have dropped you an email.

Great series this mate.
Thanks buddy videos have slowed down a bit at the moment as Im trying to get the roof sorted now and it’s just been rendered. I can confirm it is a house now though :)
I’m assuming you’re a carpenter? Hence the idea to make a second storey in timber?
Hey thanks for watching. No im not a builder at all I’m an engineer 😂 was just most confident using timber compared to brick :)
@@Transformityourself you’ve done amazing!
Thanks. New video coming soon :)
It’s the future!!
Bag window is/was ABSOLUTELY original
Your right now I’ve gone deeper I can confirm , how can you tell ?
What a top bloke cheers for shedding light on how you do it very helpful 👍
No problem 👍
I have dug a trench but cannot get 600mm all the way as some areas have sewage pipes going through. Does this matter? National grid not helping.
Good morning. I guess every employee is different but I did dig as far as I had too and they didn’t even bother checking any of it. They came and fed the cable through the trunking i laid but didn’t even ask for photos. I’d already back filled it at this stage too. So I wouldn’t worry to much. it needs to be deep enough that it’s safe and not at risk of general contact with any future excavating though.
You must have been exhausted after all that knocking down of walls! It looks like it’s possibly been one of the more fun jobs so far though. You are making some really impressive progress 😁👏👏👏
It was fun until I crushed my finger lol 😂 the fun stuff starts after this video….rebuilding. Hope your well mate
