Oh no! Just came across this rendition of The West coast of Clare while looking for the lyrics and couldn't believe my eyes reading about Dennis Cahill's passing two years ago! Belated deepest condolences to his family and to Martin Hayes, who lost a friend and a most precious fellow musician. Feeling sorry, shocked and privileged at the same time, for being around while he was alive and playing so beautifully. Hugs to the whole big clan of trad music lovers around the world.

As a newbie violin student who hadn't lugged her violin to Ireland in 2019 I was so fortunate to be allowed to sit in his master classes with the others. He was/is amazing and stressed that the heart/feeling is much more essential than getting the technical parts down.

Thanks so much for this. I'm now also enjoying the above-referenced documentary about Chicagoan Dennis Cahill, and have renewed resolve to keep learning to play 'Sí Bheag Sí Mhór'.

This variation of the tune is Paddy Canny's and he calls it simply "Britches" --to distinguish it from the trad setting, I guess.

Martin, it is a shock and sad indeed to learn of Dennis' passing. I've been listening to your and Dennis' music for decades, and had the privilege to see you play together at small venues on Hornby Island and in Vancouver BC, Canada. I will with great interest in both the stories of your friendship and music-making start watching the tribute documentary.

Only tune I can play on the whistle ! First one I learned as a chap with comhaltas unfortunately made me fall out of love with trad for a while then fell back in thanks to a great session in portlaoise
