A typical crossing of Tillicum rd for active travellers on the Galloping Goose trail. Saanich BC. Another person riding a bike was hit by a driver here yesterday, November 22, 2022. In an attempt to stop drivers from driving in the bike lane on Jacklin rd, the city has added green paint. Hey, I stumbled across your channel, it's great to see others engaging in active transport for commuting! I have a question about your long board paddle. Did you make that at home? I am looking to commute via long board with a paddle too- but wanna see what other options there are for paddles, thanks for sharing!

    • @mardomardomardomardo
      @mardomardomardomardo ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Teija, yes Iade this landpaddle at work. it's a piece of aluminum pipe I already had, I added the handle part to the top by cutting a hole for the long pipe to slide I to then I welded it on and wrapped it in a bicycle handlebar tape. for the rubber ball at the bottom, I bought from a pet store, it's a dog ball. I drilled a hole into the ball about 1/2 way into it, and slipped the pole into the ball. it's very light. just try not to use the pole as a brake, or you will wear the ball down very quickly. I hope this helps. cheers, Dave.

    i watched your longboard commute video but couldn't leave a comment. i'm 47 and just bought a second hand longboard. i have never skateboarded ever. i really want to learn. how long has it been since you started? were you a newbie when you started your longboard too? i'm so curious and so inspired.........

    • @mardomardomardomardo
      @mardomardomardomardo ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sarah, Yes I was a newbie when I started. I always thought it looked really cool and fun, then a few years ago I saw a photo of a lady in England communting on a longbaord with a landpaddle and it kind of re-kindled my interest. So when I turned 50 I bought myself a longboard. (Landyachtz switchblade 40") I did skate briefly as a kid, just on a penny board and couldn't do any tricks or anything, just roll around. I just started around my neighbourhood streets and car parks, slowly getting better at balancing and carving. My commute to work is about 12kms (8miles) so that's mostly on the terrific sealed path. It takes me about 1hr15mins, I love to do it when the weather warms up, but have done it in the winter, in the dark wearing a headlamp. I've been skating now for 2 years. I would encourage you to stick with it, and just ride whatever style suits you and makes you happy. all the best. Dave.

    oh neat i’ve been looking at putting my longboard on my bike. Which rack is that you have? I like longboarding but I have a hard time with how steep some of the goose is so i’d like to bike to flatter areas. oh and which land paddle is that? i’d like to try those some day as well thanks for sharing how you commute!

    • @mardomardomardomardo
      @mardomardomardomardo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Millie, The rack for the longboard I made myself. But I did make it copying from the commercially available rack from Fairdale. shop.fairdalebikes.com/products/fairdale-skaterack-skateboard-rack The only thing I would change if I made another one is to have the board angled back away from the seat more, as when I wear a backpack and lean back the backpack touches the longbaord a bit. The landpaddle I also made myself out of aluminium tubing, welded a "T" handle on the top and wrapped it with bicycle bar tape. I bought a solid dog chew ball for the foot part, drilling a hole in it to slide over the landpaddle end for grip when pushing. I agree on some of the steep sections of the goose, some I can now go down but still others are a challenge and I just walk down. I'm just starting to learn to slide now, so that will give me more confidence to stop when I get better at it. cheers!

    • @mardomardomardomardo
      @mardomardomardomardo ปีที่แล้ว

      I still walk down some of the steeper sections of the goose, but as I get more confident and improve my skating I find I am able to start higher up on the hills and sometimes take them all the way down. It's a very encouraging to see progress like this.

    • @mardomardomardomardo
      @mardomardomardomardo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Axeel, sorry for the delay in responding... As I'm a newb I'm probably not the best personal to ask, however from my research/minimal experience, firsly I'd ask, what type of longbaording do you want to do? If you are new to Longboarding, generally get something wider and with a longer wheel base. I bought the Landyachtz "switchblade40" which is 10 inches wide and 40"long. It's also a "double drop" board, meaning it has a drop down deck and drop through trucks. This means it's low to the ground for stability and also easier to push. (less knee bending) If you can afford it buy a good quality board to start with, they are better made and easier safer to ride than something cheap. Brands I'd consider are Landyachtz (Drop cat, drop hammer and switchblade models) Arbor longboards and Pantheon longboards. all the best!
