How long did this hike take you? Thanks for sharing your hike with us. Very beautiful scenery. I would love to see a moose if I ever get to Alaska. Until your next one, take care and stay safe.
We spent around 4 hours on the trail including a short lunch break and bear viewing. We didn’t go all the way to the top of the trail and we don’t know how much longer it would have taken to get to the ice field. It can easily become a full day adventure! You’ll have a great chance of seeing plenty of moose if you visit. There is much more to see if you have time to spend adventuring!
A fantasic view of that glacier and topped off with a sighting of black bears.🐻 Not a hike for the faint hearted, you need to be young and fit to enjoy it. Looking forward to your next video. Hope both of you are keeping well. Cheers from Chester UK.😊👍💕
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video, we were very lucky get to see those bears like that! Hoping you’re doing well also!
Which spot are you in. Soldotna I suppose but what park. If you don't mind. Thanks. Planning to go there next summer for a few days.
This is at the Gilman Fishing Center in Soldotna!
@semi-wild-alaska thank you very much. At least we'll have an idea where to go to. Is August a good time to go? Is that the peak month?
@@YTBEN1045 it varies a bit, but mid-July into early August should be good. The big run hit toward the end of July this year.
The 'Thumbnail' should be how to bludgeoning your salmon. give them the old headache #9.
“It was exactly a tunnel”, LOL. made me chuckle. Me and my husband haven’t hiked this year either. We’re both out of hiking shape too. Watching you both hike made us decide to go hiking next weekend. What time of year was this? Beautiful day you both had there. Thanks for taking us along for the day.
Thanks for watching! This was in late July and this was the only “hike” we’ve gotten all year until this week actually!
A very pleasant way to spend a day taking in some great scenery. That tunnel looked spooky but it served it's purpose.. Can't wait for your next adventure. Take care and see you again soon.😊👍💕
Thank you !
I'm about 95% sure I was up Summit Creek looking for bears the same time as you--definitely saw my truck in the parking lot shots!
That’s funny! Thanks for the guest appearance and thanks for watching!
Beautiful scenery and beautiful girls! Hope to see more of y'all chasing big game.
Thank you! We’re trying to get out there before there is too much snow!
Sit down
Catch any silver I heard lots land lock silver is in that lake certain time of year
Nope. No luck while we were out. Maybe next time.
Awesome van. Your seats look a lot more comfy than my bus seat. Are they comfortable on long drives? How's the swivel base holding up?
Hey thanks! The seats aren’t too bad, we’ve sat in worse…and better. Seat comfort is pretty subjective, but we drove 9 days straight when we moved from North Carolina to Alaska and didn’t break down crying due to discomfort, so that’s a “win?” The swivel is doing great actually. It really creates a lot more space inside the van. Very happy we did that mod.
@@semi-wild-alaska Nice I'm probably going to order one soon for my build.
@@buscampers Awesome! Let us know how it goes!
At least you found a bear at last, fingers crossed that you can find more at a suitable range to take one out. That constant rain has reached the UK this week. Thanks for a great video, take care.👍💞
It was pretty exciting! The more we’re out there the more we know we have to learn. This may be a long journey for us, becoming hunters, but we’re glad to have your support along the way!
@@semi-wild-alaska Once you get the desire to hunt there is no going back. Patience and experince are the keys to success, keeping downwind of your prey is crucial, animals can hear and smell us a mile away. Best of luck with your next hunt.

This was in February of 2023!
Please tell how much were the tickets please im not there but im in the row behind yall thanks for the great video hopefully one day in the near future ill get that seat on the train thanks keep up the great work
This is the “Aurora” train. Looks like current rates for one person, one way from Anchorage to Fairbanks is around $250. That can increase if you buy food on the train. Thanks for watching our video! Glad you enjoyed it!
Words can't express how happy I am for you to receive such a gift. The Remington 280 is a fantastic round. The BDL Rifle is absolutely beautiful. The memories you now have are forever. Having been given my grandfather's Remington shotgun, this made me shed a few tears. Again, I'm happy for you! his made me shed a few tears
Thank you! And thank you for sharing your experience!
How do you set up your rigs to fish like this .
We go with a pretty simple setup. A hook with a bead and then 5-6ft further up the line we attached spit shot weights. There are more complicated set ups with different style weights, spinners to keep the line from getting all spun up. But this is simple, quick and easy.
Any idea what was mined on the other hillside, with those switchbacks?
Primary Copper and Lead, but there was a mix of things, including some gold.
Nice job guys.
Thank you!
weird. I just watched another fishing youtube guy's video last night and he's with his friends on the same boat
That makes sense, there’s only so many charters to book out of Homer. Those guys are out all season! It would be interesting to know how many videos those guys are in each year!
Where did you get that cozy(ORANGE) AKGL ?
I think it was a limited run for the Alaska Gear Lab Heat Pouch. Looks like they still have the 3-pack in a cool green color!
What a treasure !! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Keep your gear minimalistic, simple and lightweight. That'll give you more juice for scouting and learning about the game you hunt.
Yep! Good advice. We’re patiently learning the ways.
I know that first trail you were on. Been up there a couple of times myself. You guys should of kept going up and over the saddle. It opens up into a lot of country w/ a lot of options, and there are definitely bears back in there. You should take a tent or two and spend a couple of days. Ya got to give it some time. Wouldn't hurt to bring a small caliber for ptarmigan either, there are tons of them up there. At least there used to be. Good luck!
Thanks for the tip! We’ll aim to go further in next time. Cheers!
This video should be titled. "How to Floss Your Limit Of Salmon".
Yeah! Good suggestion!
That's how they do it up there. There's videos of people using weighted hooks snagging salmon. Different rules for different places.
You should wear bells to let the bears know that you are there. Please be safe.
Like a dinner bell?
@@semi-wild-alaska something to walk with until you get to a good glassing area.
My husband has that same gun and loves it.
That’s so great to hear! Thank you for sharing!
Congratulations on hitting 1K subscribers.
Thank you!
OMG that burger looked so good. Well earned after that hike up that steep mountainside. How much did Kate’s backpack weigh? It looked heavy. Me and my husband enjoyed this video a lot. I hope Kate had a good trip with the other girls. Until your next adventure, take care.
Good question! Not sure how much it weighed, probably 25-30lbs. The gun, ammo and water counted for all the weight. The food was well earned and very tasty.
You can't blame the bears for keeping out the rain. We are going through a wet phase here in the UK, i hope it's not a sign of an early winter. Hope the girls have better luck. Take care and see you next time.
Thank you! The weather worked against us a bit on this one. It was nice and sunny for the hike up, then the clouds rolled in. Would have been nicer the other way around!

If it makes you feel any better, I snapped a 6wt Sage ($600) on a silly red while beading for bows up high near Coopers Landing. I knew better than trying to land/fight the fish instead of just pointing at it and breaking it off. That was a costly mistake for a red I wasn't even targeting or wanted. Oh, I love Trusty's Hardware! Such a cool place. NOTE: DO NOT rinse any filleted salmon off! Ever. As soon as you introduce water on to the exposed flesh of the salmon, it starts to break down and deteriorate. Guaranteed to not last even if quickly vac-packed and frozen. If you want/need to clean a fillet, let it dry a bit and simply wipe off whatever you want removed with a clean paper towel. As for dunking the fillets in the river - that's just asking for a case of beaver feever (Giardia).
Good notes - thanks! We obviously don't want to get sick! I don't think knowing that you snapped your rod makes us feel any better, just sorry that it happened to you too! Thanks for commenting!
Definitely no water on fillets ......bacterial mush
It does kinda look like you may have hooked 191K reds in 1 day. Not gonna lie - pretty jealous. Flipping for reds on the Kenai is some fun stuff. Ok, and the look at 11:33 cracks me up. It's kinda like when you go albacore tuna fishing and after you've brought in the 10th or so tuna and your forearms and hands are cramped in "the claw" position, you toss your anchovie back out and it's bit as soon as it hit the water.
It was pretty epic! We've never had fishing that good - it was a nice change of pace for sure, but our arms we're ready for it. Thankful it was over quickly!
I received my father’s Remington model 740 woods master 280 in 1969 and when my oldest son turned 40 I gave it to him, oh I still have a model 700 280 . Love the gun
That's so great - thanks for sharing!
You're making yourself work harder by dragging your rod tip through the water! Also get some bullet weights. They're streamlined and cause less resistance when you pull them through the water.
We’ve tried the bullet weights and they are great, but this is the gear we have for now. We’ve been okay with our setup! Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe we’ll try with bullet weights again next season!
Got boots? I wear size 17, so I have to improvise with my Bogs Urban Farmer boots. If you can't find the right brand name wading boots, it pays to improvise and try something else, like an oversized pair of sneakers.
Cait ended up with some Simms boots. She seems happy with them, though anything is an improvement over what she had…
Dan, no wonder it took you longer to get your limit. The fish were swimming past your feet, while you were casting too far out!
Could be true! More likely it was because I was filming Cait and netting for her. We still did okay! Not going to complain about fishing on a day like this!
These are truly beautiful rifles i had one in 270 and have compared every rifle to this model and it still reigns as my favorite
We feel very fortunate to have this gun!
What is the limit for each day
6 fish per person per day at that time.
looks like the airport......disagree w your fish fighting method....keep your tip up...much easier to fight them rather than keeping it low to the water!! that was a great day fishing....
This is at the Gibson Fishing Center. We keep our tip low and even in the water in case the hook comes out. We’re not interested in anyone taking a hook to the eye. Keeping the tip in the water helps absorb the energy from the rod if the line breaks or the hook comes out. We’ve also had pretty good success with bringing fish in with this method, but thanks for weighing in! We are always looking to learn more about!
@@semi-wild-alaska you are correct, keeping the rod high looses leverage... You are doing it correctly...
One of my tarpon guides in the Caribbean told me to almost point the rod right at the fish and just reel. Have the rod held up just enough to put a decent bow into it. Your line has more umph in it than the rod does. I live on the kenai, have employed that technique on them ever since. Hook em and just turn on the winch Lol.
@@johnwagoner7571 for sure! We've seen people pull them in that way.
Need a 9 foot Lamiglass Kenai Killer rod and a Penn 10 with 40lb Dacron. Yard them out.
Is that what works best for you?
@@semi-wild-alaska yep. When you’re just trying to limit and not have fun that setup will let you jerk them out of the water in seconds. If you’re fishing for fun, which I do, a less brutal approach is better. 😄. Tight lines to you and your wife.
I likw to wear a very bright safety vest
Safety first!
Nice floss job
Thank you! Cheers!
Is that Centennial Park?
This was at the Gilman Fishing Center, a bit further up the river from Centennial.
@@semi-wild-alaska oh gotcha! We live in Kenai 🙂 Your channel came up as a suggestion.
@@Sunshine_AK Awesome! Thanks for checking us out! Maybe we'll see you out on the river!
Is that called flossing or snagging
This is flossing. We're trying to draw the line and hook across the mouth of the fish. Snagging is when the hook is pulled aggressively through the water to grab the fish wherever - which is illegal on the Kenai river. Sometimes when flossing we accidentally fowl hook the fish - a.k.a. hook it somewhere instead of the mouth, similar to snagging - but we let those fish go.
