"GEARS" model engine motors - Shop'n with Larry #3
มุมมอง 4034 หลายเดือนก่อน
Another episode of Dad's Shop'n with Larry series.. In this episode we are displaying the series of "GEARS" air driven motors that he built through machining on his lathes from the raw casting kits from 2004-2012. The GEARS show in Portland Oregon was an annual show for model engine builders and machinists to gather for a big show & tell of their machining work. The show brought in enthusiasts ...
Custom camshaft grinder for small engines - Shop'n with Larry #2
มุมมอง 4.7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Check out my Dad's TH-cam Playlist of shop videos, "Shop'n with Larry". In this episode he shows a recent camshaft grinder he built. I got to contribute to this project by 3D printing the master cams that were used to build the desired camshaft. Here's the info from Larry about the cam grinder. “My cam grinder design is from a Home Shop Machinist article authored by Jerry Keiffer some years ago...

From Larry - The name on the engine in the video is Rick Zaik. He was the Portland Armory facilities manager where we held our GEARS show from 2004-2012. When we learned he was going to retire, collectively the GEARS group, decided it would nice to prese...
Metal Detecting Beach Surprises
มุมมอง 1053 ปีที่แล้ว
Another HiTech Diversion and this time with the Minelab Equinox 800 metal detector. I found some interesting beach surprises that made my day. The storms this winter have temporarily taken away many feet of sand and revealed new hunting grounds. Enjoy the latest reveals and get out and explore your world. Video shot in 4K60 HDR on the iPhone12.
Panoche & Tumey Hills Rockhounding
มุมมอง 7024 ปีที่แล้ว
A rockhounding adventure into the Panoche & Tumey Hills. A fun exploration of BLM land in what seems like a surreal Mars like environment in the dry season. Plenty of off-road 4x4, hiking, hunting or target shooting opportunities. Lots of great rocks were collected along the way and exploring gypsum hills was a first. Had fun trying out the new Skydio 2 drone to capture the adventure.

Nice build, looks great.
Tks. I'm glad you like it
Hello, does your Dad have drawings for this Cam grinder? I wouldn't mind purchasing. Was the magazine Strictly I.C? and was the original plans Gene Switzler? I enjoy building model engines I have built several Hit n miss but would like to get into multi cylinder and that's why I would like to build a Model Engine Cam grinder. I have a small machine shop and would love to build this! Please reply! Also, can I have an email address to contact you direct?
Hi Ken - I can't find a way to message you directly on TH-cam but I want to give you my Dad's email address privately as he would love to talk about it for sure. Are you on Facebook or LinkedIn where I could message you separately?
Disk cam grinding demo
This very cool, I'd like one for my shop!
Do you have the blueprints and or drawings for this?
I'll have my Dad contact you. In general the plans were generally from a magazine and then he customized it a lot.
Beautiful engine. I'm working on the same engine kit, which I bought from Tom's widow last year. I can tell it's gonna take a while to make. Hope it runs as good as this one. Mine will run on propane, based on a conversion kit also from Toms heirs.
That’s awesome Dan and thanks for commenting. It seems to be becoming a lost art from what I am seeing and hearing from my Dad with the clubs and get togethers / events becoming scarcer to share the great work done by machinists. Hopefully your engine will be a success but sometimes it’s about the journey.
@@hitechdiversions3160 Thanks, I'm working away on it as time progresses. Sometimes I discover missing dimensions on the drawings. I made the crankshaft out of 5 pieces of 4140, and used taper pins to insure a tight fit. I'm still learning how to "creep up" on dimensions to get it within a ½ thousandths or so. It is somehow enjoyable making this thing. Altogether I think it will be 200 parts.
@@DamLins45594 As my Dad has found over and over again the drawings for so many of these projects have mistakes and missing information. Unfortunately it seems to be an afterthought for those that created the plans to try and make it relatable for others. We are having a heck of a time getting the camshaft correct for this engine... www.hemingwaykits.com/acatalog/The_Sealion___Edgar_T_Westbury.html
@@hitechdiversions3160 I can't imagine manually making that cam. CNC grinder? Makes my little F-M engine seem simple.
@@DamLins45594 no CNC, wish it was, it is being ground with the cam grinder in the other video, not sure you have seen that grinder video. He had to make the grinder based off one design but modify it a lot. Then the problem is the cam specs were not accurate and complete so currently going through a bit of trial and error to get the cam right.. lots of trial and error and frustration. My part is just designing and iterating on the master cams in Fusion360 and then using a 3D printer to print it that are then used to grind the cam.
So Larry do you think your son could put together a video of my cam grinder ? Then we could start a war of the cam grinders
Anythings possible Steve. Cam grinding at the hobby level seems to be a black art with fewer and fewer people able to do it.
Some great finds in this one. I am soooo looking forward to getting out of this deep-freeze !!!
Tks... and cool channel you have going. Winter certainly has its challenges for you but it looks like you have all kinds of fun no matter the conditions.
Hey, thanks for this video. Do you have any locations that you would reccomend? Are there any locations inside of the recreation area itself?
Hey there.. it was our first time there so I did a lot research online and we stopped at road cuts and explored inside the BLM portion looking for areas of exposed rocks. Also the dry stream beds were good places to look. Need to go back and explore further as there is a lot of land there and variety of terrain. The gypsum hillsides on the south access were good for looking for selenite.
@@hitechdiversions3160 I went 2 weeks ago and the only place I stopped to look for rocks, was area 54. I learned that you could park outside and walk in, but the chains were down this time around, so we drove right in. No one seemed to be bothered. I don't think I tried hard enough to find anything, but there was an abundance of Jasper everywhere. I didn't think I would find anything along Panoche access road, but next time I'll be sure to take a look. Also, what are those road cuts around the reservoir you were talking about?
Have you been to Area 54, off the little panoche rd exit?
Hey Tony - In my research it used to be open but has been closed (gated) so does not seem it was accessible. It seems to be private land apparently. We did stop at some road cuts around the reservoir and found some good stuff.
