Is thyroid a ductless gland? The thyroid gland (which was named in this way only in the 18th century) was considered before as a gland devoted to the production of fluids to humidify the larynx; but a duct connecting the thyroid to the larynx was not found in anatomic dissection, so the thyroid has been classified as a ductless (endocrine) gland, that is only connected to the blood vessels and lymphatic system. The studies done on cadavers claim persistent thyroglossal ducts can be completely asymptomatic and found in 7% of the human adult population. The tract can lie dormant for years or even decades. But let say, this number is much greater. Then, this will be a clear explanation how the upper respiratory infections can travel to the thyroid gland, causing inflammation and prompting the swift action of the immune system against thyroid, leading to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Also, the fluid secreted by the duct lining can be released during talking and indeed, humidify the larynx. The glands in the mucosa of the duct will continue their secretions until the fluid forms a cyst or exit the duct via the opening in the foramen cecum. Local infections, such as colds, tonsillitis, or inflammation of the lymph nodes in the area can also lead to the accumulation of fluid within the duct. If such fluid becomes trapped in the duct it can lead to the formation of thyroglossal duct cysts or cause enlargement of thyroid capsule by filling the space between the follicles, especially if the lymphatic system drainage is impaired.
