Land Rover Discovery 2 - Service Engine Soon - Secondary Air Injection Codes
Recently my Service Engine light came on and the codes were P1412 and P1415, indicating problems with the secondary air injection system. This video explains how I diagnosed and fixed the problem. This video may be helpful for the following codes:

Land Rover Discovery 2 - Alarm and Transmission Mode Lights Flashing ("Limp Mode") Fix
มุมมอง 4.9Kปีที่แล้ว
Quick diagnosis and fix for a common issue for Discovery 2. When trying to start, sometimes the anti-theft system would trigger and disable the vehicle. If the vehicle did start (with or without a jump) the transmission mode lights (M and S) flash. When the transmission mode lights flash, when it’s in drive, the shift indicator will flash. The vehicle will only go forward in 3rd gear and you’ll...

    Volatage needs a boost. Rev up when starting the engine

      Unfortunately the battery was end of life. It was at least 10 years old. But yes, voltage boost would prevent the issue if you’re in the field or just have a weak battery due to the car sitting a while.

    So I'm working on a friends 2004 Discovery 2, it wouldn't pass emissions, it had the P0441 code and P0301 misfire. Put in a new evap purge valve yesterday, drove it for a short drive, no codes. Took it for a longer drive today, old codes not showing up but am now getting P1412 and P1415, first Land rover I have ever looked at. Looked up codes online and at some of the videos and comments, wondered if I left a hose off or something but it looks okay, seems funny that those codes are now showing up, I did have that solenoid off that sits above the evap purge valve, any ideas or suggestions ?

      So I may be telling you something you already know. Those codes are typically associated with the SAI system; this is separate from the EVAP system. First check the fuse/relay/solenoids. There are two SAI control values, one for each bank. Check the SAI relay and fuse 2 in the engine compartment fuse box. The 2 control values need a vacuum to open, so check to make sure the SAI vacuum solinoid is engerising, opening and providing vacuum to open the control valves. Of course, check all these lines and valves for blockages, cracks or disconnects. If you were inspecting EVAP lines, you may not be looking at the right tubing.

      @@NCRover Long story short, I replaced the SAI solenoid, hoses, valves, vacuum, connectors, everything checked okay, still getting codes, finally a bit of a guess/chance I reset computer and drove it around it hoping drive cycle would set so it would pass emissions and so far its good.

      Another thought, if it comes back. The code is thrown by too little oxygen making to the pre-catalytic O2 sensors during the test. If might be worth getting a diagnostics device to monitor the O2 sensor voltage during operation. I hate to mention it, but frequent codes related to the emissions can eventually lead to head gasket. I’m lucky, in NC any car over 20 years old only has a visual inspection (cat present etc), no OBD or emissions measuring, so it can have 50 emissions codes and still pass. I still like to fix my issues though.

    Where did you go? I have a Discovery and and I can understand why you would stop with the videos. The vehicle is terribly unreliable and the thought of trying to keep up with the amount of videos you would have to make every other day just got overwhelming. I understand completely. I just hope you sold the piece of crap as soon as you began entertaining ideas of taking your own life. Save yourself my friend. Sell the vehicle! I did enjoy your videos.

      I haven’t gone anywhere. Had a baby. I drive this disco for hunting and fishing, and I have done much of that, lol. Hope to make a few videos on cosmetic issues today.

    I WAS getting ONLY P1412. I read it could be only the driver side SAI valve. I removed and cleaned it and it was full of black soot. After cleaning and putting the valve back on I did a cold start with the vacuum line and air hose disconnected so that I can feel the hose blowing air and feel the vacuum line sucking. I couldn't feel tons of vacuum but I think it's a little bit and it must be enough because the lines are pretty new and the other side isn't throwing a code so I'm assuming the solenoid and the vacuum reservoir are okay . After putting it all back together I ran for over 300 miles beyond a cycle with no pending codes but then it just came back today with p1414 instead of 1412 like before.. This new P1414 pretty much reads like it's the same thing so according to an old thread I think I'll just replace that valve but before doing so I think I will swap it with the right side and see if I throw a bank 2 code. I've read that troubleshooting literature before and Visually all the connections seemed okay and I feel if it was anything else it would throw a for both sides lacking airflow and since me cleaning the valve seems to temporarily have fixed it that's why I feel that it's for sure the valve needing replacement. What do you think? Thank you!

      Sorry for the late reply. Honestly, mine has still been throwing some codes. I’m leaning for exhaust manifold leak on my disco. I’ve taken a hiatus from working on the disco with a new baby; hopefully more videos soon! Some guys I know are all saying “head gasket” but I’m not sure.

      @@NCRover hey no worries! Ya so actually mine turned out to be the vacuum solenoid but I just didn't think it was because I figured it was so a code also on the other side since it controls both sides but when I took the solenoid off I could blow through it with my mouth and it shouldn't be open all the time

    It worked! The battery was $220 in 2023 US dollars and it fixed it!

    • @NCRover

      Glad it worked! The transmission is finicky with low start up voltage. I think I have a slight parasitic draw, I drive mine maybe once a month. Usually the M&S comes on (even with the new battery). But if I let it idle, turn it off and back on, no more issue. I will say; it can also be the XYZ Switch, I have fiddles with that but I hear it’s not too bad to change and/or tighten. Some even carry spares just incase!

    What does the M and S mean? Was it the battery needing to be replaced like you mentioned?

    • @NCRover
      @NCRover ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a "mode" button on the shifter. Normally, when you push the mode button, you can select "Sport" (the S lights up) or "Manual" (the M lights up). "Limp Mode" is when there is an issue that throws a code in the transmission control module; when this happens both the S and M will light up at the same time. Also, the disco will ONLY run in third gear. You'll notice it is sluggish to start, and runs very high RPMs. Various issues can cause the car to go in to limp mode. For me, the low battery voltage was causing an amp surge that was throwing a fault in the transmission control. When it senses the surge, it protected itself by going into limp mode. So in my case, the battery was the issue. There are other situations that will cause both the S and M to light up.

    Ty this helps morons at walmart stuck me with a 650 cca 😤

    • @NCRover
      @NCRover ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and glad it helped. You can't really have too many CCA. There are 3 important factors: 1) will the battery fit in the space under the hood 2) Does you wiring connect to the post 3) Does it meet the MINIMUM CCA Like you see, with these older Disco's, low amperage at ignition can cause all kinds of issues; which is why I went with a higher CCA. These Costco batteries are really fantastic for the price and warranty.
