Brian and Laura Hales at the FairMormon Conference in Kungsbacka, Sweden, 18 June 2016. Very interesting address by Brian Hales and Laura Harris Hales. This subject is controversial, no doubt, but it is refreshing to see that all the evidence as we know it - not speculation - support the notion that the prophet Joseph Smith tried to live an honorable life in relation to all men and women. Part 1 of BYU professor Daniel Peterson's fireside at Västra Frölunda Ward, Sweden, 19 June 2016. In light of the recent wave of refugees coming to Sweden (and Europe) bringing a different culture and religion with them, what can we learn about Islam that could help us better understand and integrate with our fellow muslims. And what do we have in common? Daniel Peterson is currently a professo...

I keep coming to the conclusion that even if there was a scientific consensus that everything about the Book of Mormon was true, the church would still be swirling the drain in terms of membership. Not only are the truth claims of the Book of Mormon dubious at best, the church is fundamentally broken and it does not look like it is going to be getting better anytime soon.

FairMormon, Book of Mormon Central, The Interpreter Foundation all private Charitable 501(c)(3)s begging for your tax-free money to promote the false Two-Cumorah Mesoamerica Geography Theory which originated in the 1920s from the apostate RLDS Church. This is a RLDS site with articles supporting the Two-Cumorah Mesoamerica Theory: www.bomf.org/ This is a RLDS "Quetzal Codex" publication ripping on Rod Meldrum, just like Ugo Perego and the three organizations also do: nebula.wsimg.com/e412bb5fbf52e95401900043cb65b36c?AccessKeyId=AA525AED21BB7CA23BE6&disposition=0&alloworigin=1 The second page of this 2-page article has the same map from the 1919 book: nebula.wsimg.com/7bb9e706664eb88ffcc243bf714261ca?AccessKeyId=AA525AED21BB7CA23BE6&disposition=0&alloworigin=1 This is a RLDS or CofC 501(c)(3) called the "Hill Cumorah Expedition Team" www.hceti.org noting their expeditions to Southern Mexico to a hill they claim is the Hill Cumorah. In other words, Ugo Perego is a waste of your time as he and FairMormon are promoting a Book of Mormon Geography lie.

I totally respect Ugo Perego as a geneticist. He does good work. He would agree that there is no existing DNA evidence to support the BoM narrative. His explanation for that fact is that the BoM people were NOT alone upon arrival. There is overwhelming scientific evidence to support this conclusion. His explanation is that the Lehite DNA was swallowed up by a much larger population. This makes tons of sense as long as the narrative supports that both migrations (the Jaredites and Lehites) were small populations among much larger existing populations. The problem with this narrative is that the BoM doesn't support this theory. At all. In 2 Ne 1, it is extremely clear that Lehi is prophesying of America (he refers to the "land of liberty"). In verse 8 it says "And behold, it is wisdom that this land should be kept as yet from the knowledge of other nations" and in verse 9 it says "that they may possess this land unto themselves". In other words, it says that the Lehite expedition was alone upon arrival. Lehi prophesies of the new world invasion in verse 11 "Yea, he will bring other nations unto them, and he will give unto them power, and he will take away from them the lands of their possessions, and he will cause them to be scattered and smitten." There is not a single mention in the BoM of any group of people that is not of Jewish origin. In fact, every single lineage mentioned in the BoM (and there are a lot), is of Jewish origin. And why not? Wouldn't it be inspiring to hear about how they had to teach these indigenous Americans how to speak their language or how they converted them? It would be fascinating to learn about how they shared their knowledge of new world technology and agriculture. At least it would be worth a sentence or two here or there right? Throughout church history, it was always believed that ALL Indians were descendants of Lehi. Prophets taught this. This narrative only began to shift when scientific evidence strongly suggested otherwise. And finally when DNA studies were conclusive that Indians originated from Asia, the BoM intro was changed. It used to say that the people of the BoM were the "principal ancestors" of the American Indians. Now it just says that they are "among the ancestors" of the American Indians.

You have to remember that the book of Nephi were kept with the purists Nephites. All they document is that the "Lamanites" gained darker skin and a nomadic lifestyle. The catch is they didn't keep track of their line.

In 1st Nephi 18:25 it recounts what animals the Lehite group found in the new land. It includes "goats and wild goats." Now I ask you, if there were no people already there, how could there have been goats that WEREN'T wild goats?

@@virginiabrown2445 i agree. A bigger problem is the mention of steel making technology. Also, the mention of bringing old world seeds and them having wildly successful yields is a huge problem.

@@virginiabrown2445 I don't know if that verse is helpful to your case. According to scientists, every animal mentioned in that verse EXCEPT the wild goat is considered anachronistic. As far as the verse supporting other tribes of people, it seems like pretty weak evidence. First of all, it doesn't mention that the goats were domesticated. And if they were, it seems extremely odd to mention domesticated animals from an entirely separate group of people but not mention the group of people.

I see what this informative lecture accomplishes: learning that DNA is relatively useless after the 5th generation, unless you have the ideal situations. It does show that the study of DNA of Meso-Americans vs. Israelis failed and it wasn't really the ideal situation, though Anti-Mormons rejoiced. On the other hand, we shouldn't take much stock in the study of North American tribes vs. Israeli DNA, though it showed some correlation. Our Milanese friend, Dr. Perego, said that he hoped Meldrum has more evidence for the Heartland model than just DNA. Well Rod Meldrum does. Anyway, interesting lecture, despite the jab at President Trump. I'm happy that Donald Trump is our president, BTW.

People who leave the church don't look for reasons to leave the church. They look for reasons to stay. But after honest consideration of the evidence, their integrity demands that they leave. It is often an extremely painful journey but eventually leads to true freedom. Think about it for two seconds. Who in their right mind would trade eternal salvation and eternal life with their loved ones so they could spend a few short years on earth so they could enjoy alcohol or coffee?

@kirkland meadows - One DNA used to condemn the Book of Mormon is mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Only women pass mtDNA to their children. All of us inherited our mtDNA from our mothers. The other genetic marker being used is the Y-chromosome (Y-chr), which is passed by men to their sons. Tom Murphy, Simon Southerton, and others claim the Book of Mormon is false because neither Middle East mtDNA nor Y-chr has been found among the American Indians. Here are a few reasons for that. Lehi and his family of no more than 40 individuals sailed into an area already populated by tens of thousands of people. They intermarried with the natives and their mtDNA and Y-chr disappeared within a few generations. Another reason would be that after the arrival of Europeans in 1492, the native population was drastically reduced by warfare and disease. In the National Geographic video "America Before Columbus," Professor Andrew Isenburg of Temple University said that upwards of 90% of the Indians died within 50 years. Entire villages and tribes vanished. That means that all DNA tests performed today would be on the descendants of the 10 or 20 percent who survived. That is not a very accurate sampling. Also, many tribes have refused to participate in any genetic database tests. My final reason is the unreliability of mtDNA and Y-chr. Our second daughter married a man whose paternal line is Danish and whose maternal line is Japanese. They have a daughter and two sons. All three children have the mtDNA of their mother, which is my wife's mtDNA, which is from Sweden. The boys have their father's Y-chr, which is from Denmark. Using the same tests that Murphy and Southerton cite to support their argument, one can prove that those children have Swedish ancestry, and that the boys have Danish ancestry. But NO ONE can prove that they also have Japanese ancestry! If those tests cannot find any mtDNA from their Japanese grandmother, who is alive, how reliable are those tests in finding Israelite mtDNA or Y-chr from 2,600 years ago? The lack of Japanese mtDNA in those children DOES NOT mean that they are not part Japanese! The lack of Israelite mtDNA or Y-chr in the surviving American Indians DOES NOT disprove the Book of Mormon! The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
