छत्रपति शिवाजी महाराज को 'नौसेना के जनक' के रूप में भी जाना जाता है। भारतीय नौसेना के झंडे में भी छ्त्रपति शिवाजी महाराज का प्रतीक चिह्न शामिल किया गया है। छत्रपति शिवाजी महाराज ने तब नौसेना बनाई थी जब ज्यादातर देशों के पास नौसेना के नाम पर केवल छोटी सी टुकड़ी हुई करती थी। शिवाजी की नौसेना की नींव ही बाद में भारतीय नौसेना के विकास में काम आई।
शिवाजी के मराठा शासन के दौरान 1674 में नौसेना की स्थापना की गई। समंदर में पुर्तगालियों से कोंकण और गोवा की सुरक्षा के लिए नौसेना बनाई गई थी। तटीय इलाकों के पास नौसैनिक शिविरों में हिंदू और मुस्लिम दोनों एडमिरलों को नियुक्त किया गया था। पुर्तगाी, ब्रिटिश और समुद्री लुटेरों से सुरक्षा केलिए नौसेना को मजबूत किया गया था। बताया जाता है कि शिवाजी की नौसेना में 500 जहाज शामिल थे।
