My name is Austin Birks. I wanted to kick this blog and TH-cam channel off for several reasons:
Firstly, I have been diagnosed with bowel cancer for the second time in a year. If the truth be told, I was very lucky to survive cancer last year. I was weeks away from meeting my maker. Then the amazing NHS stepped in and after emergency surgery and 13 doses of chemo, I got the all clear in July 2019.
Then in October 2019, it came back with a vengeance, and now I am about to undergo more chemo and surgery. It might work it might not, but I will give it my best efforts, and live to my martial arts mantra of “Never Give Up, Never Give In”.
This is about my journey, not just with cancer, but with life in general. It is designed to be honest, funny, sobering, but most of all, I hope, a journey of one person living with this disease but living life to the full, and why would not you?

The countdown is ticking - 8 days to go
The countdown is ticking - 8 days until I will be performing my stand up gig at the Glee Club in Birmingham. Thanks to everyone who has kindly and generously donated. I am trying to raise £3000 for Cancer Research UK this time - £1000 for each time that I was diagnosed with cancer.
In 2019, I did stand up comedy at the Glee Club for the first time. A day later, I was told I was cancer free. Then, only 3 months later, I was told the cancer had returned and I was given a 25% chance to survive the next 2 years. Well, here I am, 2 years later! And about to perform on that Glee Club stage again!

3 years ago Austin was diagnosed with level 4a bowel cancer. Recently, he has received his 50th course of chemotherapy.

We recently adopted a dog. Meet our lovely Donna, a rescue dog from Romania. She has travelled 1600 miles in a van to be with us and brought to us by the good souls at Friends InDeed dog rescue, Adrian and Maria.

I've had a stoma since September 2018, when I was unexpectedly diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer and had to undergo emergency surgery. I didn't really get chance to prepare for this life-altering operation and just learned that the best way to deal with it is to just get stuck in an deal with it - no hesitation. It is there to save your life.

The Bag for Life saga continues with the very recent news that cancer has returned in 2 places and yet again, I find myself on the eve of tough chemotherapy. Yet another challenge to be met, so I shall meet it. Never give up, never give in.
Am I cancer free? The big day

Today was the day I had anxiously awaited. I spoke to my oncologist to discuss my CT scan to find out if I am free of cancer or not.
Cancer results tomorrow - what happens next?

It's the night before I am getting my CT scan results to find out if after my 2nd surgery and 3rd course of chemotherapy the cancer has gone or not. I am feeling cautiously optimistic, but I've been here before and know you can't take anything for granted. Whatever the outcome, I will fight on regardless.

I finished my last course of chemotherapy 3 months ago and last week I had a CT scan. Next week I will find out if the bowel cancer has gone. In the meantime, I have been keeping myself fit with karate and exercise at the gym.
