Michelle was nominated and should've gotten the Oscar for this movie. Back in those days Oscars were in the habit of giving it to veteran actors as a "lifetime achievement" award, and in that year it was Jessica Tandy for "Driving Miss Daisy". While I thought Jessica Tandy was an excellent actress, but Michelle's performance was better that year. It also didn't hurt Jessica was 80 years-old, so the Academy felt it was either now or never in giving her the Oscar.

During that time Oscars were still in habit of giving it as a lifetime achievement award to performers in their twilight years. Michelle was going head to head against "Driving Ms. Daisy" that year at the Oscars. Jessica Tandy was around since the 1940's and Michelle didn't stand a chance. Any other year, Michelle would've won. BTW -- I just saw Fabulous Baker Boys again and it still holds up surprisingly well, even the Bridges bros were great, but didn't even get nominated that year. This was Michelle's best chance for an Oscar. That "Making Whoopee" scene in that hot red dress. Whew !

Yes, Michelle is lovely, but not many mention the accompaniment. Dave Grusin’s piano work is incredible. It sets the pace and the atmosphere and if you’ve ever tried, incredibly difficult to replicate. 2:52

This arrangement is as good as any I have heard. A little less strings, more Michelle and piano. I vote to award it Best Song -post hoc. I will take Alice Fredenham’s vocal arrangement, with her achingly plaintive styling.
