Did Lew Wallace's belief in redemption have anything to do with his offering Billy the Kid amnesty? And if so, why did he go back on his word?
Hi, Henry. Thanks for asking. As far as I can tell, Wallace was acting in his capacity as governor of the New Mexico territory. He didn't offer Billy a pardon but immunity, hoping the prisoner would give testimony regarding the murder of a local sheriff. A state prosecutor repealed the governor's offer of immunity, and when Billy escaped from jail, Wallace himself signed his death warrant. None of it seems to have troubled Wallace's religious conscience.
