SBC Intake Manifold Gaskets and Heat Riser Delete
Just a quick update on where i'm at with this build.
Making a decision about what gasket to use for the intake. I have concerns about the heat riser intake port. I don't believe it is a necessary item for a warm climate. Adding heat to a carb decreases performance due to less dense air. Not sure how important this is but I will get down to the bottom of it soon enough. I also discuss painting the EPS intake to help keep it looking better and easier to clean.
Cheers
PS thanks for the likes and comments.

Gasket Dilemma
มุมมอง 1935 ปีที่แล้ว
Had the machine work completed, cleaned, crank ground and polished and cylinders bored .030 over. I was told I didn't have to have the deck done because it was in spec and the gaskets are thicker so it will be easy to seal. I took it all home in a Jetta, put everything together Crank shaft pistons etc and then learned about Quench! I also found and my Rebuilder pistons having a shorter compress...
Installed 305 heads on the old 283

Well its getting closer to go time! My "shop" is a bit tidier since I have less parts on shelves and more connected to the engine block. I used a small amount of oil (less than a drop) under the head bolts from a fishing reel syringe applicator. The head-bolts came with thread sealer but I added just the tiniest amount to give a slight lubrication and sealing as they were torqued into the block...

The fuel rails on a 305 are narrower than any 4in bore. Head 283 thru 350 So the fuel flow rate is compromised you will get more compression, but no more horse power. I saw a guy do the ""54cc heads right", ,, on a 307 no gain.

Hey I just purchased a new melling m155 Oil Pump, wet sump 3/4 in Inlet plus new pickup for my 350 4x4 tahoe chevy S B. Did the pickup measurement and pre oil prime and watched for oil to show at the rockers, oil flow looked OK. Was told by melling techs it would produce 60 plus PSI which it only produces 40 PSI cold and 30 after engine warmed up. But the real problem is the pump is the most noise pump I've ever heard. Pump sounds like it's grinding or whining like crazy untill engine reaches the 190 degree operating temp but you can still hear the sound just not as noticable but clearly still there! Almost like running timing gears sound but some what louder! I'm real disappointed as there was a real mellow sound from the pump when I was priming the engine. If not for having to pull my engine again to get to the pump I put the old GM pump back in ASPA which produced a soild 60 cold and soild 50 warmed but weather is just to cold right now. This GM pump had over 100 thousand miles with oil changes every 2,000 needed or not so thought it was time to replace even though inside of old pump was excellent and pressure was always consistent. Once the weather gets warner, garranteed I will. Even removed engine belt to make sure it was not the water pump or AC. I should have not listened to the tech saying melling pumps are better that GM pumps. All my bro's who said melling would not be their first choice but rebuild a lot of engine are saying after hearding the sound that this melling pump was making they won't be chancing replacing any oil pumps for their customers or friends with melling made in china junk. I even purchased a automotive stethoscope, sure enough it's the melling oil pump. Have done two oil changes with no sign of any metal shaving on my magnetic oil plug. The sound is unnerving and has my attention all the time while driving, can't wait to change it out!

Thank you for the review. My father invented this product and manufactured it for years. Sold them to jegs and pioneer until his patent ran out and he didn't have the funds to renew it. I had been manufacturing them for him for the past few years. He has been in a nursing home for six years unable to do it himself. I haven't gotten an order from pioneer or jegs in a long time. I guess they found someone else to manufacture it. My father's name is Bruce Chenault. This invention consumed my father for many years. Sold his automotive repair business so he could devote all of his time to market and sell his product. He thought he was going to hit it big with "The Loop" as he called it. Got it featured in a couple magazines like Hot Rod and Super Chevy as well. But in the end it broke him. He dumped all his money into it. Shortly after selling his business he had several small strokes and just never got much from it.

I use the restrictors in the blue gasket. The most important time to have carb heat is when its 33-50ish degrees out with high humidity. The air temperature drops in the carb, so you can actually wind up icing the carb over in those conditions. If its 32 and below the moisture in the air is pretty much gone, so less likely to ice over I've got one I put together with Vortec heads (no exhaust crossover on these heads) and ive froze the throttle open a couple times under those conditions. Had to stop and take off the cold air intake duct to get hot air in the carb.

Sorry I have not been updating. I found it is important to do your research and calculate your Deck Height and combustion ratios before you start putting things together. Some mistakes I made were \ Not knowing rebuilder pistons were shorter and the piston at TDC will be deeper in the hole than factory, Some of the the low compression engines I think in the 70s were built deep in the whole to begin with and or in the hole varies substantially on different casts etc. if you don't deck you will have to use a thin shim or steel gasket and this could be a problem because these thinner gaskets tend to need a smooth deck. also 283 already used thin shim gaskets factory so you are not going to gain compression regardless. OLD school New School guys will cringe if you do budget things like 305 heads and delete the road tube or the cone shaped breather behind the manifold. I kept the worn power pack heads and original intake and breather hose to go back to a classic original old school engine for possible future use. Read! My machine guy takes mostly old 350s and makes them Marine engines slaps a thick blue felpro gasket and told me you don't need to deck its good the gasket is thicker. LOL Great for a low performance motor in some old mans deck boat but not a solution for a little street rod or something. Just get into the details! You can find solutions for many things but all these small corners being cut ad up to a slug of an engine. Your not really gonna make a lot of power from a 283 but you can go to Skull Garage on TH-cam he does a lot with the 283. Have fun,
