We went to the Dixieland 250 there. We got to meet Jesse Love Aric Amerola and William Byron. Nathan thought that that was the greatest thing ever .there were alot of people there the night we were there. Spent the night near there then and came home the next morning. Its about 3 hours away or so from Freeport

How these tracks are able to pay a purse with 50 people in the stands is mind boggling. Racing has gotten so out of hand with costs soon there won't be any tracks left. Oh how we sabotage ourselves.

What a great little track. I started coming to these races back in the early 70's, the last year of the full size cars were running, Trickle a Torino, Marzofka a Torino, Reffner a Cyclone, Back a Fairlane, Detjens a full size Dodge, great racing. The next year they went to the pony cars and Marzofka changed to Chevy, Trickle with that purple Mustang was strong from the start. Some great racing between Trickle and Marzofka that year. I was there every week during 72-74. In 75, if I remember correctly, I heard they might be looking for a starter/flagman, so I went out to talk to Phil. At that time Phil and Helen Bickley promoted the races at SPS, two of the best people you will ever meet. My interview with Phil lasted about 5 minutes and said he was flying (Phil had his own plane) to Madison tomorrow to watch the races at Capital Speedway and did I want to come along, I was a little concerned, but agreed. From the time I met Phil at Wausau Airport until the time we got back, there was not one quiet moment, so much fun. Phil was good friends with Sam Bartus at the time, and Sam promoted the races at Capital. Sam picked us up at the airport in a new red Cadillac Eldorado convertible, took us to lunch and then the races. Sam was a good guy. Watched the races, back to the airport and then arrived back in Wausau. Phil says, see you Thursday night. No training no nothing, here are the flags and here is a radio. Jim and Willie in the tower and Bear ( a great guy) the pit steward on the radio. Helen and Phil had so many good people working for them, Dawn, Karen(always brought me a soda half way through the program, thank you), Ed, and others. I did that for a few years and then my small business got in the way. Geno was the starter for years before I started, a bit of a hot head, so he and Phil bumped heads more than once, but he came back after I left. I hadn't been to SPS in a few years, but my wife and I went out one Thursday night in the early 80's, just sitting, enjoying the races, a beautiful night, half way through the races some driver bugged Geno, so he jumps off the stand, runs down the fence and onto the track, stops the car, slams the flag he had in his hand on the guys car a couple times and off we went. Not the first time. There was a slight delay in the program, next thing I knew my name was announced over the pa and I knew what was up. I finished the night for Phil and the year out. There are so many stories I could tell you about the years with Phil and Helen and SPS, and they were all good, because of Helen and Phil. So very much fun. So many great races by some of the best in America.
