"Hump the Pig". Best advice I ever got before Ranger School. Always volunteer to hump the Pig (in my day the M60). Don't make a deal out of it. Just do it. Makes a leader's job easier (doesn't have to 'make' someone do it.) and in time, good peers will realize what you're doing and insist others/they take it. But you've set yourself as guy willing to do the hard job and not complain. I also made sure I knew how to maintain an M60 Blank Adapter: Volume of fire from the MG was biggest thing in a gO or No Go on many assaults. Have tools to maintain that adapter! Class 4-83

4-83 I was given 1st graded-weighted OPORD in Darby. 90 minutesish. Got a Go-Max. Florida: Lived by FRAGOs. Good tips in here. Know what's important. Spend time on that. People are tired. KISS

4-83. Florida RIs said NMT 2 luxury items ( 2 gums, 2 tobacco or 1/1 each etc). I had packed 5 cans of Copenhagen in one Red Man pouch so I could hook up our squad. We went out for the 2d half of the 10 day. As soon as we cleared the wire, RIs said drop rucks, dump 'em out. A guy in our patrol had an extra gum. Told him pack his stuff and he was re-cycled. I stood there looking down at that Red Man pouch and prayed the RI wouldn't look too closely. Technically it was just 1 tobacco but... Think about that: 5 days from being done and recycled for a pack of gum.

1. Extra AAA and AA batteries [for headlamp and NVGs] 2. Extra duffel bag [so 3] 3. Extra insoles. Changing them helps keep your feet dry. 4. Extra knives and multi tools. [You'll lose some.] 5. Extra map markers, especially black. 6. Pencils, pens. 7. Black light because it charges the loom tape amd compass. [Yes, UV Light] 8. Gum. Bring as much as you can. I brough a ton of hubba bubba to Sapper school. 25 calories a piece goes a long way when youre starving. They say only stick gum so...not sure. Bazooka is allowed though. 9. protractors. Put clear tape over it to protect the numbers. 10. Extra tactical gloves. 11. Extra night caps. 12. 2mil thick black contractor bags to water proof your stuff. 13. Extra sustainment pouches [not allowed in Mountain] 14. But pack/waste pack...not sufe if this is on the packing list but if not. Bring it. 15. Premade ressupply boxes to send to yourself in mountains. You probably wont get it in Darby

I can see where if you had time to do this it would be useful. However, I keep imagining some PFC out there coming back from a training mission and his gloves, pockets, and plate carrier looks like he got gangbanged by ghosts.

how strong is the frame?

I have passed this channel on to my two children who are cadets. This is some great leadership lessons.

This also somewhat works for the filbe, though there isnt really a need to put the strap through the frame, the 1606mc has a different attachment(though the molle 4k went around that and made it worse)

Maybe it's SOP to use the LC2 covers, but a 2qt canteen will fit in a SAW pouch.

I've got a trick for threading 550 / 1100 cord. Take a zip tie and double it into a loop. This loop will now slide under the bars on pouches or belts. Stick your cord through the loop and pull.

Class 4-83: Back in our day, we called our ALICE Large rucks "The Tick", because it sucked the life out of you. Sounds like things haven't changed.

I appreciate this soldier taking the time to share his failure so others may learn from it. It's hard to do what he just did. BZ, troop!

Key point RE test firing: It may be different with BFAs now, but in Class 3 & 4-83, we had heard that the M60 BFAs were horrible. We were told to bring small vise grip pliers and a solid screwdriver to get the BFA tightened to the max and make sure it's good in test fire. If I was PL, I tried to be the guy with the M14 and be close to the SBF position. If the 60 jammed, I could switch to AUTO and rip off a couple of mags - so it sounded like the 60, while the gun team un-fucked the gun. RIs hated to hear the 'sound of silence' when it should sound like high volume of suppressive fire. In our day, the machine gun was the crucial tool, and having the right tools made it work. (We didn't have Leatherman tools in 1982, btw)

This. 100 % THIS. Remember, you asked to be there. You'll never have another chance to learn about yourself what you will learn here. "Forgive people" is crucial. Remember, as bad as you think about someone else, someone might think about you. Get outside of yourself. Avoiding fratricide isn't a box to check - doing so shows you think about your people the right way. Look around for people that need you to lift them up in that moment. Allow others to lift you too. You'll need it at some point. 40 years down the road, you'll realize how you were part of a fractionally minute slice of humanity - and how damn few of us there are in the world. Every person with you there is amazing in their own way - some better than others. Appreciate the Fellowship of Shared Suffering.

Back in the day, the Hooches in the Mountains were a great place to focus exclusively on your squad, and relationships. I was "allowed" to experience this twice with no break between class 3-83 and Class 4-83. Knowledge wasn't what got me recycled. First night in the hooch they asked why I recycled. "I dropped 5 patrols" was a helluva introduction. Told the whole story - success and failing to handle failure. That "true confessions" opened me up, and the squad was open to what I knew/didn't know and I was able to share it in a way that made us better as a group. It's a cycle - you know more than they do but have to present that in a way they benefit from and don't come off as a know-it-all. Those guys helped carry me through that 2d pass.
