I remember years and years ago I played a Maplestory private server and I donated $10 to it and they gave me gm status so I just scrolled a rolled up newspaper to 1000atk.

Really learned a lot here. I play official WoW currently, but have tried private servers in the past when I couldn't afford the subscription. Definitely interesting to see behind the scenes a bit.

3:39 Why you should only play if you have bought a copy of the expansion the server runs. Also why private servers should exist, to own the game have to rent the right to play it should not be protected by copyright. While the expansion is live, the monthly is for support and patches. Once the expansion is finalized and the next one comes out, this is where private servers should take over.

I'm trying to set up my private servers for a true solo-player experience. Hopefully I can find a setting somewhere that makes it so I can easily solo the raids and dungeons without having to turn on .gm mode.

It might have taken long than we wanted, however we had to tidy up a good number bugs (see our changelogs over the last few months with hundreds of issues resolved) and modernise a lot of our core scripts in Azerothcore before we kept on marching forward with our progression plans. This also has the return of our 'Mythic' mode for the raid (optional harder difficulty than the light tune we gave the normal mode of the raid) and guaranteed a much smoother experience than our previous releases! You are not prepared!

No open source license requires you to give up your content for free. What the GPL forces if that, if you DISTRIBUTE the software than includes the original code, you must include the complete source code. It doesn't say at any point to distribute it for free, or to distribute it at all. Aside from that, I do agree with you. It doesn't matter if you're forced or not, if your building on top of what others did, the right thing is to share back. Want some exclusivity? Fine, keep it for a while, but give back when the novelty effect runs out

You can play private classic servers only if you have never played retail WOW the past 10 years. The quality of life improvements in retail make private servers almost unplayable now. I've been playing on Chromiecraft for the past month or so, and they have done a great job of making it nearly bug-free.... but at the same time, there are just so many QoL issues that Blizzard has improved. You also forget how bad some of the questing was in early wow.

There is some mysql code i made in there and that makes me proud that's also a reason we do this:)

thought about doing my own server, biggest thing really stopping it is having a second WORKING machine to run the server on... come to think of it there's a couple of other games i would love to run a server for...

RuneScape private servers have the same problems and nuances. We’ve been completely taking over the scene with our 2004scape open source project on github. The traditional RSPS developers are fuming

I really like private servers that add custom content to the old game. Sadly the game after MoP is not the game i love and Blizzard does not care about the old game anymore.

DO NOT GM for private servers unless you know for a fact that they pay their GMs. It's not worth the headache, it's not worth your time, it's pure volunteer work. I'd love to say "oh it's fun at least" but it's a 50/50 whether or not you have to deal with poor management from the admins or tolerate assholes back to back. Just a PSA from personal experience :>

First, I wont pay Blizzard a penny for this bad content. I gave them chance for almost all expansions from cata to df and its a big dissapointment. Even now in DF there are too many things you have to do which dont depend on skill but on how many hours you spend in the game. No thanks. Thats why I play TBC and WOTLK in private servers which are the best of WOW. This is the same reason I play only Diablo 2 but not 3 and 4. I gave the chance and the result is the same. And please log in Warmane in Lordaeron and tell me what doesnt work. I dare you to find even one bug.

Hunger for money and greed. It starts as fun project, but "management" changes and in the end they are copy of big corpos. Yeah, I get it - servers need maintenance and other services + other expenses - but come on!

From 11 to 13 I was a GM in wowbeez, also when I made my lan private server to explore with my brothers. Those where times of wonder and discovery. This video brought back many of those feelings and 15 years later, I agree wholeheartedly with the argument, as my child would have then, tinkering with the tools made by an open and creative community! :) Thank you for the video

Exactly I have provided lot of scripts/programs etc.. free to the public, and Unlimited wow that's been shown multiple times on the video uses lots of them and what they did was : advertising spam inside my own server and when i asked the owner about it, he blocked me. It's SADGE Yes i would encourage people to play on ChromieCraft and stop playing on that Unlimited wow / warmane etc.. Support the real guys please!

Hey could it be possible a server with addon that use data like gathermate or even rare addons doesnt work mean the server is made from his own core ? i remember everyone left the server because the devs was to slow to fix things or script things that should have been there and because of addons like rares or stuff like plants and minerals wasnt shown on the addons you litteraly had to find stuff before it show on the map and even on this server you couldnt watch on wowhead because none of the plants/minerals was at the same spot

Grown up on private servers of any kind and pvp ones are extremely useful to improve against the best of the world (who are hardly on retail). Despite this, I'm now on classic vanilla cause I'm tired of risking my char to be canceled because server failure 😅😅😅😅

Every time i see shadehound event not working in the maw+that idiotic quest in korthia where you need rift key,marked as done, but it really isnt+mad lag on every new event i really think private servers are better, they are free atleast

I think CC is the worst server that has ever existed. This server is the very last one you should hear out on this title topic. Honey bans people and gives no reason and she has banned the whale that gave alot to them. Banned my entire guild with 4 raid teams. Made my friends guilds quit. Broken content after YEARS. Why the ban people and not do dev work I can never tell you. TBC content is so broken they should just skip to Wrath with what little players they still have left.

The Open Source philosophy built the modern internet, without it the advances of the web wouldn't be possible. As a species, we really are best when we collaborate instead of compete.

This is really just symptomatic of a fundamental difference in philosophy. You are speaking from a more liberal, open source perspective where the primary objective is creating a good experience for the experience's sake, and cash flow is merely a necessitated byproduct of operating such a service. Most private servers clearly operate from the capitalist's perspective - that is, they BENEFIT from the current state of affairs because it makes them more money. Making a good experience is merely a necessitated byproduct of generating so much cash. Of course, I think everyone reading this comment (myself included) is going to agree with the open-source philosophy, because we're the ones actually trying to play the game. A private server's thirst for cash only harms our experience and ability to enjoy the game, but that's irrelevant to them because that's not the point.

why are you level 55? I thought this server was on the TBC expansion now?

Came here to say that I don’t give a flying fuсk on what you think about private servers. If PS can do better job than blizzard, there is nothing wrong with people playing there.
