Chasing Tail in October Snow! North Dakota Upland Bird Hunting and Pheasant Hunting
มุมมอง 12K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
An early snowstorm dumps several inches of early snow in North Dakota. How will our will we adjust to find success? Upland bird and pheasant hunting can still be done, if you know where to look. For returning viewers, you're not seeing things. This is indeed a repost of a video I did earlier this year. I REALLY like this one and I don't feel like the YT algorithm gave it a fair shake. So I did ...

Snow Birds- Pheasant Hunting North Dakota
Just wanted to let you know, as a fellow ND upland hunter, your videos are probably my favorite upland hunting videos on TH-cam.
@@ICECOLDOUTDOORS Thank you so much! That's very rewarding to hear!
Patiently waiting for some new full videos ,love them all keep them coming
Nice to see that I'm not the only one missing shots. 😂. What kind of dogs are you hunting with?
I think we all do! I don't shy away from showing my misses. If a new hunter is watching, he'll know that going through a box of shells for a limit of birds isn't as uncommon as one might think! Kenobi and Tonks are both brittanys.
Man, you have a flinch going on.
I want to come hunt with you
Do you have to use steel on the WPA?
@@Swygard Yep, sure do.
My Brittany Girl …… doesn’t care to Retrieve !
Kenobi is half and half. He'll retrieve the hard ones, but sluff off the easy ones!
I like 😎 ….. when it is Sunny ☀️
I grew up in NM and we had lots of pheasants around the river
@@AZHuntingBuddies NM is not a place I expected to have pheasants. That's cool!
Cool video, good job!
Thanks the excitement Of the first pheasant and call to family made me excited too See you next year stay safe and god bless
Thanks! It was a pretty special day!
Why im single work messes with hunting besodes a wife
@Imragnar1 I get it. I really got lucky with my wife.
you can tell from the footage on the second bird you were way ahead of him, hey it happens to all of us
@fidiusjwhoopie yep. I noticed that too. When I first started bird hunting, the guy I learned from told me that birds are always moving faster than you think, and that I should try to miss in front of them. I guess I took that advise too literally on that one....
This from last year?
@treywindish3983 it is! I work overseas during the summer, so I get all my footage together for one season and work on it while I'm away from the family. It's a wonderful thing to keep myself occupied while I'm on the other side of the world.
@@the_upland_sasquatch awesome haha had me worried that you were maybe a week off 😂😂
Been watching your videos for a couple of years now and I really appreciate them so I finally subscribed,, do you ever hunt ruffies??
That's awesome! Thanks for the sub! I've hunted ruffies once before. Not too much opportunity for them in North Dakota, but we do have a few small pockets where we can find them. I actually hunted them last season and had planned to do a video on it, but sadly, I didn't get enough footage to make it worth it. Only 2 flushes and none in the bag.
Is it legal to shoot over the road in north dakota? Aren't you worried about your dog on the highway, looks like a paved road.
The only rule that I've found in North Dakota (and we've looked extensively) is that roadways are usually controlled by the adjacent land owner. If that land has been made available, whether by permission or otherwise being available to the public (as is in this video), shooting over a road is fine. As for the road and our dogs, we're not overly worried about it. Yes the road is paved, but that's mostly because the vehicle traffic in the area tends to be predominately heavy in nature. Big rigs and service rigs for the local oil fields. Those sorts of things. It's definitely not a highway, this road in particular is not a major thoroughfare by any stretch. Also, Steve and I hunt this spot often enough to know that vehicle traffic on this road seldomly passes us when we're there due to this spot's remote nature. Even so, we do take precautions. I'm walking up high next to the road where I can see oncoming traffic from a considerable distance. In addition to that, our dogs are usually, if not always wearing hi-vis vests for better visibility. Kota had gotten her vest soaking wet earlier that day, and having that sit on her body was more dangerous by far.
Great video, even better dogs!
@@lilyandrebel5904 Thank you! We sure are proud of them!
Great video and great dog work and shooting! What part of ND are you hunting? I like how short the cattails are. I hunt IA and MN and the cattails there are super tall, and i am not a short guy.
@giuseppedellanna7173 Thanks! Thats always nice to hear. Since none of the spots are mine to share in this video, I can't give you too specific a location. But I feel comfortable saying that I'm in Western North Dakota.
Nice video, glad I discovered this channel.
@jblocker6613 thanks man! Thanks for joining us!
Also where did you get your dog?
I got both my Britts from Northern Star Brittanys out of Wilton North Dakota. They've got an excellent program over there, especially for a small-time breeder.
@@the_upland_sasquatch I love my Britney. He came out of North Carolina. But he's 8 so time to start looking at a pup
@@patindvik3408 that's a great time. Old guy/gal still has enough energy to teach the youngster.
So if the bird crosses the fence in the air can you still shoot it?
My understanding is yes. Or, at least I can't find any rules that say I can't.
@@the_upland_sasquatch I have always wondered that
Good strategy. I do the same, no good to loose more than one cripple. Ethical Hunter.
Thank you. My least favorite part of hunting (really the only thing I dislike about hunting) is losing cripples. I get the whole "circle of life" thing that most people talk about when they can't find a downed bird, I really do. Every critter has to eat, and that includes scavengers, bugs & worms. But I think the moment we start losing that sense of regret over a missed recovery, in that moment we lose a bit of our humanity and sportsmanship. In short, we can accept the circle of life, but we don't have to like it.

love your videos man keep up the good work👌
@BADBILLY7547 Thanks man. That's always nice to hear.
is that private or public land you were hunting on.
It's a mixture of both.
That is a perfect example of why doubles are junk.....but you gotta love pheasant on ice.
Sorry about the frustrating day! Kenobi looks like our boy , his name is Raider. Kenobi and Ray could be twins. Maybe some ring rust. What komd of E collar would you normally recommend? I still dont trust my boys. Rather, we still use a long piece of paracord as a check cord so i can get him back and ensure he doeant run off.
I run a Garmin Delta Sport XC, which I believe is out of production now. The equivalent they have on offer now is the Garmin Delta SE. It's simple, easy to use, and relatively inexpensive (but still not cheap). What I would really like is anything in the Garmin Alpha series. GPS tracking is the way to go if you have dogs that like to get some range, or even just wander. Unfortunately, with my house being in a constant state of construction (massive DIY remodel...) I just don't have $800 - $1200 to drop on one just yet. Kenobi will probably be a retired old bird dog before I can afford it!
Kenobi needs a lil beep on the collar 🫣 don’t worry man me and my bubbas have that preseason rust as well. I gotta get him out next month to shake off the cob webs!
@anthonystoll5289 You're definitely not wrong. We found out that at some point during the first few minutes of the hunt, his collar shorted out. I bought a new one and had it on him the very next weekend, so his performance improves drastically over the next few weeks.
The dog was just blowing you off. There are no consequences for disobedience. Because you couldn't correct him, he blew you off. What e-collar did you get? I recommend a garmin Pro 550.
@@the_upland_sasquatch My GSP does the same. Gets excited and gets out a little too far. But a quick beep gets him back in line. Wish I could master the training but we do what we can with what we have. Good luck this season!
Nice video 👏👌
Thank you! Cheers!

Really enjoyed your video. Love the format of just you and Kenobi plus your commentary on hunting strategy and pheasant behavior.
Thanks! I'm very happy with how this one turned out.
Thanks for sharing, and you gained a subscriber. I just recently got into upland game hunting here in my middle age, and also have a Brittany. What general area of ND are you hunting in? Everyone seems to talk your ear off about SD opportunities, but you rarely see people sharing videos of ND hunts!
Thanks for the sub! But yeah, SD is pretty well known as the Mecca of the bird hunting world. I'm okay with that. Keeps our bird numbers in my neck of the woods nice and quiet in the background. Generally, I hunt western North Dakota.
@@the_upland_sasquatch thanks for the reply. Will have to add western ND to the visit list for next year. I don't think I can swing the 12 hours one way from south-central Wisconsin this year.
Ah! Just found your channel. Very nice! Great hunt. Great job, Kenobi!
We're pretty proud of him! Thanks!
