What makes music spooky? 🎃
Matching a mood to the appropriate music is tricky, and a lot of people have trouble with this. So, I take you through a "journey through time", in order to show you how music can be used to tell a story. I'm using Halloween as the main event because its fun, and I created a Halloween challenge specifically for this video. I also rate each piece on how creepy it is from 1 to 9, while describing the piece using 2 adjectives.
Thank you @viopatti for your beautiful performance of the Shifty Boo Mansion. Please check out Patti's channel to see more performances of video game themed music!
I'm creating a very competitive music notation software, which made some demos in this video possible. Early access is available:

      lol! It's an awesome chord, and a great way to transition from one key to another. I was trying to figure out what made this Bach ending so interesting, and after I mapped out the chord degrees, it then hit me. Those evil sus4 chords, especially when modulating to A minor.

      Try doing 18:4 lol. Chopin was a crazy man, and I am going to be demonstrating these tuplets in my next video. Thanks to Chopin though, this shaped the way for Music Jotter's tuplet entry system, which accurately plays any tuplet against any beat structure with the correct polyrhythms. One thing that makes JSB's fuges so great is that while they are long they are interesting and exciting through out. He goes way beyond the simple mechanics of fugue writing, something that had been done for hundreds of years before him, but they were never done better than JSbach. He took all that skill and made it into something fresh and interesting, way beyond the simple mechanics of a fugue.

But going back to learning....everyone learns at their own pace. Because of my own personal learning style (I'm a kinethetic learner, which means I really can only learn by "doing"), this is a big reason why I am creating Music Jotter. Sure is! This will be a "use with caution" experimental feature, however I plan on storing all keystroke data on the server. This means, each file will be like a "wiki". So if things really screw up, you could just rollback to an earlier time with a Ctrl or Cmd Z. With Finale or other programs (if they are as powerful as Finale), you'd have to pick each measure, know what key you are in, and keep changing the key signature to the specified key. Then choose something like "hold notes to same staff lines". But with Music Jotter, we are completely ignoring the key signature. Let's say the key signature is in F minor. And, I compose measure 1 in Cmaj, then measure 2 in Fmaj and measure 3 in Amaj. No matter what key we are in, Music Jotter would convert each of those measures to Cmin, Fmin and Amin respectively. The trick is, we need the correct "spelling" of the notes for this to work 100% with accuracy.

  • @musicjotter
    @musicjotter 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I want to point out, that the minor to major conversion "automatically detects" the key you are in, then makes the conversion for you. This means, the conversion is "dynamic", and not converting to just "one key" like in other programs. I'll explain this feature in a longer video.

    • @MuskratMusic
      @MuskratMusic 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@musicjotter oh yes cross staff beaming. I had to look it up, but instantly reminds of a Haydn piano sonata in 6/8 time I did the notation for. I know I asked a long time ago I'm pretty sure, but where can I download your software? I would like to look back at some of my scores and send you a few of the ones I made. I'll make some new ones also while I test your software I can just Google music jotter? I seem to compose better with notation software. Musescore 3 was ok but could of been better as far as making corrections sounded like snes kinda from what I remember. Musescore 4 gave me nightmares kept corrupting my files very often and saying it was missing a random amount of beats in each measure. I would probably never of stopped if there was no issues.

    • @MuskratMusic
      @MuskratMusic 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I forgot to add I really like Chopin. I forgot to mention the timing is amazing on that sounds like that is how Chopin would have intended it exactly. I might make a second channel that is classical recordings and notation compositions. This is inspiring me to compose more again and notate different composers. I like playing with the instrument selection making the song for guitar instead of piano, or composing my own stuff with orchestral instruments.

    • @musicjotter
      @musicjotter 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm selling subscriptions to "early access" users, but the software is still being developed. I will be opening a new tier for "challengers" soon (for those who want to take part of my challenges using Music Jotter). If you want to test the software, you can head over to www.musicjotter.com/mj/

    • @musicjotter
      @musicjotter 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also " Musescore 4 gave me nightmares kept corrupting my files very often and saying it was missing a random amount of beats in each measure." This is what I have to really focus on too. And this is a huge reason why I am advertising Music Jotter as "early access" still. I have to stress test the system for corruption issues. But I can't stress test until the software is nearly 100% complete. We are approximately 80 to 85% complete.

    is there a way to hide those interpretive tempo markings and other markings from the final score while maintaining their effects so that the score looks more "natural"?

    • @musicjotter
      @musicjotter 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I'm going to add a way to "hide" markings. There will be 2 methods of hiding. One is "hide but gray out" so that you can still see the markings, but they will be hidden when you print to pdf. But another version is to "hide hidden symbols" which will hide the markings while you are composing (as to not distract). But adding tempo markings is extremely efficient, and I essentially added the tempo markings from my memory of how these pieces should be performed in "rubato". You never want to rush a Chopin arpeggio or tuplet! They are way too poetic, and every note must be heard with clarity.

    I want to keep an eye on your music notation program! Accidentals: If you have a flat going to a notated natural, that should be re-notated as a sharp going to a non-notated natural. Vertical layout: there are many inexplicably wide gaps between the voices which make the piece sound uneven vertically. Rhythmic variety: perhaps one of the episodes should be notated in largely quarter notes. This is a problem with fugues, that a lot of the variety has to come from note value changes. Subject/answer variety: having the subject continually go down to that ABA figure tends to make it repetitive and a little dependent upon that figure. Give your subject a little more variety.

      Thank you for giving this a listen. I've had to force myself to get into counterpoint for the sake of testing voice writing with Music Jotter (my expertise is with melody, and Romantic writing). Luckily, even if I am not great with Baroque style writing, I enjoy it and want to improve. My next fugue will demonstrate "staccato" using 3 voices, and I'm debating if I should play both versions again. The piano will pick up staccato much more accurately than the organ, but the organ, as you stated just sounds a lot better with fugues. I will say that Music Jotter has helped me get back into the "art of music composition" very quickly, after a long hiatus. It's quite literally bringing back my "love of composition" that other software has not been able to do at all (since the departure of Personal Composer).

For example, in this waltz by Tchaikovsky, there are not always "supporting beats" to account for the tricky rhythm (this happens when all the notes are being played together). And it makes it critical for the conductor and performers to count correctly, rather than to rely on the music as a reference point.

      Yeah you are right! It could use more rhythmic variation. If I do another fugue, I will try to spice it up a little. Appreciate the feedback! And it doesn't matter if you are an expert or noob. Sometimes beginners are the best critics.

      Don't let my experience discourage you. The first 5 or so years, I didn't understand TH-cam, and uploaded the wrong types of videos each month. I never actually wanted to be a TH-camr, so that also played a role in the channel's lack of results. But once I started to look into TH-cam more carefully, I realized I had to start this channel over...and be in my videos. I actually realized this after 2 live streams.

My first videos were just the wrong type and I thought they was good at the time. I hope to improve and make content that people enjoy. I like watching this channel and will keep watching. Do you have a favorite composer or top 3 or top 5? I am curious to know what you think If not maybe a favorite era of music or a perfect composition?

      @@MuskratMusic Some of my favorites would be Chopin, and many of the Russian Romantics (Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Medtner). But I also love Baroque music, and I can't ignore Bach. As for the perfect composition? Oh I don't know, there are many greats, but some of my favorite piano works would be by Chopin (Ballade 1, and Ballade 4 is even better). Tchaikovsky's symphonies are all good too. I posted a clip of one of my favorites as a short, his 4th (a waltz).

    You asked for criticism, so here it is. This video seems to be mostly about the software. So I'll talk about that. The site is terrible. The texts on the front page make no sense and very few of them actually outline what the software is in detail or why I should use it. It mentions pointless features, that aren't features, such as embedding with an . I can just export anything from MuseScore into PDF and embed it anywhere I want. Besides reading useless information, the main page doesn't prompt you to do anything. There's no call to action like "try it out now". The only call to action is the donation button, but why would I donate to a project that I just heard about while the main page doesn't give me any exciting info on why I would use it over something like MuseScore? Why is this software trying to look like a microsoft office app? But somehow worse. The domain says it was registered just over a year ago, but this site looks outdated by at least 15 years. Couldn't find any links to public repositories of the source code. So I'm guessing this won't be open source. I would be surprised if any VCS is used in development at all. Or if any best practices are followed. However, I won't be surprised if the entire app source is obfuscated (so god forbid someone might make it better for free). Why? The MuseScore software has PLENTY OF ISSUES and your software addresses none of them. It looks like you just decided to just make some music notation app that looks like a microsoft office app in the browser, but didn't actually plan why one was needed or what actual useful features it could bring. If you see this comment as non-constructice, that's because it isn't constructive. And it couldn't be. It's not like there's a repo where technical issues can be submitted and discussed. And even if there was, why would I say anything more than "it sucks" to a project that's "copyright - all rights reserved"? Your license is not asking for contributions (whether in source or in feedback), in fact, it prohibits such.

    Frankly it sounds like a computer playing quantized notes with no feel whatsoever. Did you actually play this? It does not come off as something that a human actually played.

    • @musicjotter
      @musicjotter 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No I did not play this, I composed it by hand. I'm going to be continuously working on improving the human feel. I couldn't implement too much "human playback" yet because if I overdo it, there are issues with notes cutting off, unless I sustain the notes. So this is something I will work on improving. But the Chopin examples are a different story I think, because I implemented some of my own techniques to match what a pianist might do. What are your thoughts on the Chopin Ballade and Piano Concerto excerpt?

      You must have a super ear! I plan on notating the full Chopin Ballade as soon as Music Jotter can handle trills and cross staves. And I will try my best to make it sound like a pianist, for the video. I think the biggest problem for me personally is the velocity layers of the samples. They are too "drastic" from p to mf, and I haven't quite figured out how to handle that. Mainly because I don't have control over how the piano samples are actually sampled.

    Nice sounding fugue - in the end that's all that really matters - rules are meant to be broken for the sake of art. In the notation of accidentals like sharps, flats, and natural, there is much use of D flat where C sharp would normally be used. Obviously, these are enharmonic equivalents - the same note on the keyboard, but in published sheet music much care and attention is paid to choosing the most appropriate enharmonic equivalent. Notice in published sheet music of Chopin you will often see double sharps and double flats. Why is that, when often a simpler enharmonic equivalent such as a natural would be the same note on the piano? The reason must be that many pianists are aware of what key the passages are in and what chords are represented, and it makes it easier to sight read the music if the enharmonic equivalents that match the keys and chords better are used. Often, that practice also leads to fewer accidentals being needed which saves on ink and makes the music notation easier to read. So, in passages that appear to be in the key of D minor, one would normally use C sharp because it's the leading tone to the tonic scale degree in the harmonic and ascending minor scales.

    • @musicjotter
      @musicjotter 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! This may make a case where I program Music Jotter to automatically help the composer out with "enharmonic equivalents". When I am in "composition mode", I tend to forget about readability. I know, I know, bad on me. But this is definitely something to think about!

      Yes I agree. The rhythms definitely could use improvement. I tried to cheat my way out of that by doing some tempo changes, but now that I think about it, that's not enough lol. Appreciate the feedback, and thanks for giving this a watch and listen!
