Unexpected! SpaceX Declares Starship Will Become a Space Station
Unexpected! SpaceX Declares Starship Will Become a Space Station
=======================================
While unconventional, this concept is not altogether novel. Historically, there have been suggestions to convert elements such as external fuel tanks into space stations. A meticulous analysis reveals that Starship presents several pivotal advantages, positioning it as a highly promising contender for this transformative endeavor. To begin, let us consider the material. Although Starship was not explicitly engineered to serve as a space station, its stainless steel architecture provides significant advantages. Stainless steel exhibits remarkable durability and is resistant to corrosion, allowing it to endure the severe conditions of outer space, including extreme temperatures and impacts from micrometeorites. This resilience not only safeguards the spacecraft's integrity throughout its journey in space but also establishes it as an exemplary foundation for a sustainable long-term space station. Moreover, stainless steel exhibits a comparatively straightforward maintenance and repair process in relation to alternative materials employed in space infrastructure. Secondly, and in this particular case, size indeed holds significance. Which Starship stands out in this regard? Standing at 50 meters tall with a diameter of 9 meters, its interior volume exceeds that of the International Space Station, making Starship a truly monumental craft. The forthcoming Starship V3 model, towering at an impressive 70 meters, is poised to further enhance its capacity. Originally conceived to transport 100 passengers on extended interplanetary journeys, Starship is exceptionally well-equipped to provide living quarters, workspaces, storage, and the necessary scientific apparatus for a space station. An additional significant benefit is the potential for reusability. Should it be tailored for operational deployment as a station, Starship's capacity for returning to Earth for refurbishment could significantly lower expenses in the long run. This principle of reusability is in harmony with SpaceX's overarching objective to enhance the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of space exploration. NASA and SpaceX conceptualize a space station comprised of a network of interconnected starships.

    Blue has completely relied on historicle testing. Where does inovation and creativety come from? Ula also relies completely on tried and tested knowledge. How can Blue expect to fly successfully on the very first attempt? It boggles my mind. How can Ula and Blue expect to reliably keep pace?

    Make no mistake about it, I am primarily a fan of Space X. However, I dearly hope to see BO successfully get New Glenn into LEO early 2025. Picture two people deciding between two different routes to a destination about 60 minutes away. One route is only about 30 miles away, but the road is an unkempt gravel road with potholes and large rocks along the way. The other route is about 60 miles long, less direct but via a paved well kept surface. Elon takes the risk choosing an off road vehicle trying to go the 30 miles at 30 mph. with high risk. Bezos elects to use a reliable town car to cruise the longer 60 mile route at a smooth 60 mph with a lower risk. Who wins? Either could win. A lot depends on the weather and other changing conditions in the roads. The key is both have a valid method of getting to the destination in 60 min. Space X is taking huge potential risks via rapid iteration. Blue Origin is attempting high precision from the start. I've worked in various companies and have experienced the high risk tolerance vs the low risk tolerance methods. I've seen both work well and both fail. In the case of Space X vs. Blue Origin, I would suggest that there will be several more failures for SX before success happens and BO is more likely to have their first attempt, maybe 2nd, be successful. Yet, the timeline may be similar in the end. I do think it's great that Elon is basically more transparent than Jeff. Although I may favor Space X, I have to also say I hope they both become the leaders in space travel and exploration in the not so far away future. I could write a book on why I would like to see both companies excel. The short story is because I'm an American and they are American companies. The long story includes the collaboration between the American companies along with NASA, the Space Force and the DOD. Imagine the US Navy. Yeah, they are mostly carriers, battleships, submarines and etc. But the unsung heroes are the Navy hospital ships that in time of war save lives of our soldiers and even those of our enemies. In the meantime, during peace, they travel the world helping battle diseases, poverty stricken nations with starving and sick children and have helped provide relief to areas in the world devastated by disasters. Imagine the USSF (US Space Force) being something like the Navy in space in a future where many hundreds to thousands of people live and work in space (off world). And example taste of the future: Medical research stations 3-D printing organs to replace one's own dying liver, kidney, heart, lung, etc. with new organs grown with our own DNA. In micro gravity this is already possible in a limited form. With earths' gravity, it is nearly impossible. By the way, America First....absolutely. Only if we make our own nation healthy as individuals and as a nation, can we ever hope to have the real power to help peoples of other nations in need. The space frontier offers the potential for a healthy nation far beyond what most Americans believe or understand.

Whereas , a Rocket gains Speed and Momentum as it goes up , allowing it to reach and maintain Orbital Velocity ! ... OK -------- . The HIGH bay is the perfect size for RAPID Check Out (not refurbishment) and Loading Cargo Onto Starships between Launches and cannot be replaced without high cost and waste of time. With the Area the High Bay now sits on being too small for the Size the GIGA BAY SpaceX needs to Efficiently contain at least 20 Starship/Boosters during Construction to produce 100 Starships a year. With 30+ more likely... Unless the Recently Completed Parking structure is destroyed along with the High Bay. Increasing the time it takes for workers to walk from their cars to their JOBS all across the Complex, Decreasing Productivity... Not to mention, that using the current long transporters to move Starships and Boosters between stations spread out in many Separate distant small Giga bays would add cost and time for constructing each Starship/Booster.. ------------ . By constructing the GEGA BAY West of the existing MEGA BAYS or even South, SpaceX has plenty of Room for the size of the GEGA BAY they must have with a central transport Isle between two rows of Starship/Booster Construction Stations under one Roof.. With a central overhead crane system for quickly transporting Starsships between stations using their Lift/Landing side Pegs. While reducing the WASTE of time and Cost of both workers getting to work from the Centrally located Parking structure and Starships/Boosters being moved from station to station by transporters and or moving Construction Machinery and Processing Equipment between Starship/Boosters on fixed stations as they are needed...!!! While some Assembly processes need fixed stations most work can be done cheaply by moving the smaller needed equipment between ships allowing differently designed Starships such as Tankers, Lunar Landers, Lunar Habitats, Orbital Stations, Earth Orbit Lifters and Mars Ships that would take their own processes and time to not hold up a fixed static production line or the added cost of constantly moving Ships when a few smaller pieces of construction equipment (even if they weigh hundreds of tons) are easier and faster to move with the over head cranes... Allowing Cheap copies of Some equipment to work on multiple ships without waiting for a single ship to finish and move..Especially with unseen delays and if the same equipment is needed multiple times during construction between other processes that would have required the ship to be moved each time. ----------- . A mile-long GEGA BAY is preferable to dozens and DOZENS of the smaller GEGA BAYS scattered across square miles exposing half-built Starships to the nasty unpredictable Wearther of the GULF Coast of Texas that would be needed for building the thousands of SpaceX Starshjps that will be Demanded once the RICHES of Earth Orbit, Mars and the Solar System is Realized with the Reduction of cost below Airliner rates...

    These BF Rockets need to be Toughened Up to ever be Reusable ... that's going to add a lot of unwanted Weight ... These flimsy tin cans . bend , fall apart and leak everywhere ! .... That's No Good and could lead to a Deadly Disaster ! .... and that brings back NASA and the FAA ..... :-[

    The Boca Chica Circus seems to get more Bizarre everyday ! ... Now Madman Musk is shooting his floating BF Boosters with Military Jets to help them Sink ! .... Unbelievable ! SpaceX needs to tighten up its Leaky Fuel Systems ! .... They have too many Residual Flames and Fires going on , looking to cause Problems .... :-[
