All hail @JustinHawkins , the guitar hero we never realised we needed 😎🤟
How's everyone getting on with this series so far? Let me know in the comments!
Great to revisit this absolute classic album - The Darkness may not have taken themselves seriously but they sure as he'll took their music seriously and DAMN those Hawkins boys can play! Enjoy 😉
So by now you've got all the Big 5 chord shapes and you're all ready to go on a few classic rock numbers including Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe" - join me in the next episode for possibly the most well-ised and popular chord sequence ever conceived!
Another from the "been playing this wrong for twenty years" file 😂 nice to get this down, it's a cool little lick and means I can finally do justice to this legendary solo!
Great lick friend, like master!!!
@@ChangoGuitarras gracias Chango! Que pasa amigo?
One last look at the gone too soon Canadian virtuoso - keep an eye out for the Licks Of The Legends style guide in a couple of weeks!
Check Brett Stine’s work on the subject. Cheers. 🤙🏻
Cheers, will have a look!
I think Allan basically said that hearing any non altered / non inverted / non messed with major or dominant 7th chord "caused him pain".
You know what, that rings a bell! I think that was from an interview in one of the first guitar magazines I ever bought..
@jmguitartuitionuk I think I read it requoted or paraphrased in a recent article. It could be vintage, but I definitely read it online this year. I think it's funny to pretend him saying that haunts me (hopefully keeping me from being lazy (though I just play at home as a hobby)). Re: difficulty in learning the Tony Williams tunes. I haven't tried learning any of it myself, but I have been able to make some progress learning some of Allan's parts on Gong's Expresso (aka Gazeuse). If you haven't, you might try some of that. Also 1970s stuff, if you aren't familiar with it. And/or Bundles (Soft Machine). They both seem generally a little easier imo. Maybe Allan's doing more single note stuff? (Of course, plenty of impossible playing on both as well.)
@ElrondHubbard_1 I've actually tracked down "Igginbottoms Wrench" on TH-cam, so after a look at the likes of Charlie Christian and others he counted as influences I'm going to have a crack at that, I think 🙂👍
This was a hard one! Hopefully you can all take a few concepts and ideas away to integrate into your own playing, even if you're not a fan of fusion!
Some absolutely blistering playing from #JeffHealey on this one.. lots to choose from for the Licks Of The Legends video next month! 😅
Beautiful playing
Thank you very much!
Beautiful palying
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Just a couple of corections. There is a coil tap on the tone knob, and the fretboard is Black Walnut, not rosewood.
@stevejamo1958 is that right? Tha is for the heads up- is that to do with the rosewood shortage I seem to remember hearing about a few years back?
@@jmguitartuitionuk I've no idea, but thats what it says on the Levinson website. I got one in trans red, used for around £350 about 12 months ago.
@@stevejamo1958 howd8d you get in with it? I was really impressed with the One I trued
@@jmguitartuitionuk I used to have an American Special Strat, and I prefer the Levinson. I really like the pickups, and it plays so well.
@@stevejamo1958 got to admit, I'm sorely tempted by one, particularly as my regular Strat has just turned 25...
I think #JeffHealey is fast becoming my new guitar crush, can't believe it's taken me this long to get around to checking his stuff out! Better late than never I guess ;-)
Beautiful major lick! Thanks my friend, sounds great!
Gracias Chango!
He was an awesome player and a good songwriter, Can’t wait to see what you do next
@Damnation3729 he was indeed. Basically invented a whole new way to play guitar- inspiring guy 😍
Not sure why TH-cam keeps letting these out early, but oh well! Bit of a palette cleanser this week as we head back into the blues with the late great #JeffHealey - another one who belongs in the "Gone Too Soon" file, sadly.. one hell of a player!
I hate to tell you this but you aren’t in tune. Also, do you know how to set your intonation?
I think you're hearing strings very much at the tail end of their service life ;-)
Not to get too theoritical - but you can leave the two top notes completely open on a G chord. But generally the top E string is fingered at the 3rd fret.on an acoustic. If youre "Rockin it", then the bottom 3 notes/strings would suffice, especially with a BOSS Metal Zone 🙂
Are you talking about dropping the 3rd and playing a G power chord? Keeping away from the METAL for the moment ;-) All in good time!
I'd suggest a starting speed of about 52 BPM, and then ramp up 5 BPM at each practice session, with an aim of 110-120 BPM. Which gets you into Punk tempo's
I'd agree, that's a pretty sensible approach
NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED that T-Shirt :)
@doubledeckercouch6251 🤣 good, isn't it? Pressie from my other half- will ask her where she got it 👍
To be fair, you probably could get a Grammy from it, if Rhianna sampled it for her next tune :)
Have her people call my people, we'll talk ;-)
Let's add another chord! In this episode we'll tackle the A chord an wrap our fingers around another song!
Time to add that crucial third chord and take the leap to playing some ACTUAL SONGS! Hope you're all ready ;-)
Time to get our chords on! In this episode we'll learn the G & C chords along with some simple strumming patterns to get your rhythm chops up and running
OK, so now you know what's what on the guitar, let's get to business! First co-ordination exercises and a blues riff in this episode
Welcome newcomers! Let's start by explaining all the weird and wonderful terms we guitarists love using to make ourselves look clever ;-)
Must have let this one out early 🤣🤣 Let us bid farewell to Mr Holdsworth with this pretty nifty little intervallic idea... Must admit, this month has been quite the challenge! Keep an eye out for the Licks Of The Legends style guides in a couple of weeks time :-)
Check out the full lesson here: th-cam.com/video/IkhSV5s1VQE/w-d-xo.html
JM GUITAR< Try to make all the unusual chords hendrix used on the whole Axis bold album he used 6/9 chords and slash chords different root notes to make a lesson about
That's a VERY good idea - a whole "Hendrix Chords" lesson! Let me have a think about what that could look like 🙂
Got to admit, this month has been hard going! Still, managed to steal a couple of ideas - look forward to sharing them with everyone in the Style Guide in a few weeks! 🙂
It was a blast running through a bona fide piece of classic rock history, but I had definitely underestimated the sheer volume of music on this album! So Jimi will be returning to the blog in 2025 for the second half of the album, and I dare say a few Five Minute Solos along the way.... what did you think? Did you ejoy it?
as a friend of Albert, you did okay! He is So smooth and polished!
He really is, just effortless :-) Welcome to the channel, any friend of Albert's is a friend of mine!
I guess I’ve been playing it wrong for the past 10 years also. I know how I’m spending my night now.
@ZombieMan789 you're welcome, my friend - welcome to the channel! It's that b6 I'd been missing 🤣
Damn I’m going to have to get that under my fingers now after playing it wrong all these years. Well I guess I know how I’m spending my night now. Thanks for the video
Nice to take a few minutes to finally sit down and get this right! #RandyRhoads will be getting his own #LicksOfTheLegends later this year, so stay tuned 🤟
Sweet 🍯
RIP John Mayall, thank you for all the amazing musicians you gave a break to. Hope you all enjoy this excerpt from the classic "Beano" album with Eric Clapton and be sure to hunt down some of the other Bluesbreakers albums - Cream, Fleetwood Mac and plenty others owe this man a debt! Enjoy, let me know in the comments what you did and didn't like and I'll see what I can do to make the next one better!
Buenísimo tu material, muy emocionante, saludos James!
Gracias cristobal, bienvenido al canal!
Possible I might have bitten off more than I can chew here 🤣🤣 good luck everyone!
Cool
Thank you! Hope it was useful 🙂
Wrapping up the #JimiHendrix licks for now with this little number, hope ypu enjoy it- keep an eye out for the Licks Of The Legends style guide video in the next couple of weeks 👍
I always wonder if the artist actually thinks up in these "bizarre rotation" of notes, and much of what we hear is just sloppy mistakes and notes invokde by such things by "moving your blues shirt sleeve out the way", or "reaching for a ciggie". Is it better to simplify the notation, and interpret the patterns to what you tihink the artist was triying to hint and aim for.
Yeah, I have a theory that the b5 in the blues scale came about that way, as it's an easy one to hit by accident... I think it comes about by players just wanting to add a subtly different feel, like an artist would use darker and lighter shades of a colour for highlight and shadow, or a chef can just feel that something "needs more pepper/salt/Tabasco"
Nicely done mate! Well done on reaching 1k! 👍
@lmusicb Cheers mate, genuinely couldn't have done it without you 👍
Thank you so much to all who have subscribed and supported this channel over the years, hope you enjoy getting stuck into this and using it to amaze your friends! Back with more #jimihendrix next week ;-)
I like the lesson. If I were to suggest some things for future videos I would: -get a better mic. (Rhode GOs are a great choice and not too pricy) - change the thumbnail (srry but you look like a crazy person in that pic ) - And go more in depth /slower so we can all absorb the info better. Thanks !
Thank you! Yeah, audio (and audio/video sync) is something I've torn my hair out trying to improve 😣 Duly noted - that is just how I look though 😂 cool, will do - Hendrix in th next one and keep an eye out for a special 1000 subscribers One Minute Lick later ;-)
@@jmguitartuitionuk Excellent !! Looking forward to more Hendrix licks. I would suggest Machine gun or Voodoo Chile’ (not voodoo Child) I forgot to mention that your production quality will improve if you get another camera and focus it on the fretboard so we can see a closeup of what fret / string to play. Either via a top down view or portrait ( looking straight at it head on) Cheers !
Ask and ye shall receive ;-) Well, I haven't got to "Machine Gun" yet, but "Voodoo Chile" definitely - Electric Ladyland Pt. 1 is up next! OK, will give that a whirl on the next vid - currently using a pair of old smartphones as auxiliary cameras and been experimenting with positioning, cheers for the feedback :-)
@@jmguitartuitionuk sickk ! And no problem 👍
Agreed - James you talk too fast dude, and when I put the CC subtitles on the YT AI is not able to track what you are saying. This is importnant to get right, as Google/YT uses this matching score to rank you in the search. Basically YT/Google want to ensure you video caters for all. Take the "Pinball Wizard approach" - Always cater for the "deaf, dumb and blind kid" I like the onscreen tab - thats very useful. Although you miss off a lot of the vibrato notation - but I can see it best to keep things as clean as possible, it just that with Blues playing, the notes are usually the same 3 or 4, it's slides, micro bends and vibrato which give the message to the listener. Agree - get a better mic, or a better mix of the audio. It's always a common problem with your videos. Not sure if you're hearing the same thing as everyone else, but everything sounds quiet - I can hear more of the strings, OVER the guitar. Almost like you have the guitar amp vol pot set on 1, or less. Dont take my opionions feedback to heart - just want you to make things better, and stuff which makes me watch other peoples videos over yours. For future songs - A good one is "Just got paid" by Bonamassa. It's one of them tunes that has yet to be fully transcribed and a yt tutorial. Something like the with Mass appeal will attract many new subs to your channel.
Fully agree. So important for rhythmic work as well. I practice with my p90 SG 1968 with a 1 watt blackstar cranked up providing fabulous tone.
Thanks Anthony! Nice - I used to have an HT5 and they're lovely when you crank them :-)
@@jmguitartuitionuk Cheers the only mod was to have NOS tubes to replace the standard ones. Your discussion of the importance of muting is very underrated. I think it is one of the most important keys to playing driven guitar for rock blues to another level. It's a shame a lot of people don't get this. Keep up the good work.
the first srv LP i bought was soul to soul, then i got live at the el mocambo video, the tone of No1 and those vibroverb`s or his dumble seemed otherworldly, you`ve captured his spirit nicely here, not an easy task !!😎thanks for posting
Thank you my friend, that means a lot! Welcome to the channel 🙂
August 27 1990 was a dark day indeed, when we lost Stevie. He had soul! Thank you for helping keep his music alive.
When you put it like that, transcribing his music and sharing it with others is a real privelige. Thank you, my friend.
