Unboxing Joy, A Weekend Away and CAL News!
One way to guess-timate the amount of yarn neaded for the long tail cast on, wrap your yarn around your needle the same number of stitches and this will give you the approximate length you need. I usually wrap is 10 times and then use that as a gage for 10 stitches. As for the tension… practice practice practice is your best friend 😅
Thank you for the tips! I need all the help that I can get 😬😂. How long have you been knitting for?
@ I’ve been knitting for over thirty years at this point, my mother taught me when I was so young I can’t remember 😆
Wow! I wish that I’d learnt to craft so young.
For your hat, I like your idea of a cream ribbing band with the body of the hat in the brown.
Thank you ☺️. I wasn’t 100% sure.
Another lousy tutorial on crocheting side of border. ♡75yrs old, Black woman, LndSu
I found this video at the perfect time! a couple of days ago i had a yarn tangled nightmare from a failed centre pull. I hope this trick works for me!!
🤞Are you making something fun?
@@elimeedesignsI've just recently got a knitting machine so have been making lots of hats and am about to start on a vest soon! centre pulls are super helpful for knitting machines I've found (if they're done correctly!)
Ooo good luck 🍀. That sounds like fun!
Oh well done Nichola! Those three worked very well. I'm really thrilled you tried it after finding centre pulls frustrating before. I think this technique isn't ideal for the cake style wind of the Hayfield yarn but I have found it ok for the Paintbox Cotton usually; I just had to work a longer to flatten them more and open the middle up so I could be certain I was right in the centre and find the start. Like you say they aren't as squishy.
Thank you for the extra advice. I’ll have to try again with the cotton. The Hayfield keeps barfing even now that I have the centre pull 😩.
Please show us how you do double crochet as your first chain. Thank you
I use this method ☺️ th-cam.com/video/NzZHGaTN_-U/w-d-xo.html
@ So good Thank you.
You’re welcome
Really love the simplicity of your border and your very clear instructions. I am new to mosaic crochet so this video is much appreciated.
I’m so glad that you found it helpful ☺️
Unfortunately I had to withdraw my pattern from the CAL, so this is now a standalone pattern.
I feel your overwhelm! When I counted mine at the beginning of the year I had 356.
Glad I’m not alone on this journey ☺️. How is yours going so far?
For all the tiny odds and ends make pompom garlands and baubles for your Xmas tree!
I love that idea ☺️. Thank you. Have you made many yourself?
❤😊
Did you find a pattern you like?
I like them all but the hop scotch granny purse is adorable!❤❤@elimeedesigns
🥳
Where can i find out more about the cal coming in november please. ❤
I’m just waiting for the host designer’s blog page to go live before I share the link ☺️. I will pin a comment to this video and add it to the description as soon as it does. If you join my email newsletter I’ll be sending the details out there too?
@@elimeedesigns i think i did that earlier today. ❤️ thanks for the info ❤️
No worries
It’s NEVER too early to start a Christmas blanket.
Exactly ☺️. Have you started yours?
@@elimeedesigns Yes. It’s a granny square with Christmas colors. Some squares will be the regular style and others will have Christmas themes in the center. I haven’t done very many, though, and there’s no special date for the finish. I just work on a square every once in a while.
I’m working on crocheting a blanket for each member of my family. I have a large family, so it’s slow going. I finish blankets for each of my children and their families. I’m almost done with the third one and her kids. Considering that I have eight children and twelve grandchildren, I think I’m doing fine. However, the recipients probably think I’m too slow. It’s fun, though. When I need a break I make a stuffed animal and matching blanket. I also take a turn working on the Christmas blanket.
Sounds lovely!
Wow! What a lovely tradition 😁. You have to enjoy the process, so I agree, plenty of breaks when needed are a must. 🍀

I think the snowflake pillow is really beautiful. And while rainbow-colors usually aren't my favorite, this little guy seems like fun. Good work on finishing up the easier projects first. Between knitting, crocheting and sewing/embroidery I have about 4 to 5 wips laying around. All of them more time-consuming projects like blankets and cardigans. I interject smaller projects like mittens or socks, so I don't get to fed up with the long term commitments. The fifth wip is an emroidered hussif, that I don't have a definitive design goal for. Technically it is finished as in functioning and in use, but I keep on adding elements to it as time goes by. We should probably not be too harsh on ourselves or others. It is okay to switch things up and leave an undesireable task laying around for a bit.
Thank you ☺️. I had to google what a hussif is, and they look amazing! A lot of my remaining WIPs are more time consuming too - I have a love of blankets. I haven’t stopped to count how many sewing/cross stitch WIPs I have 😂. I agree that we must try not to be too harsh on ourselves, but I do feel better now that my WIP count is slowly shrinking. Do you have a particular WIP that your are focusing on at present?
Well, I am aiming to get the cardigan done next. After all winter is coming, right? I am at home for another week with the flu, so I might just get that done. Well, there are absolutely stunning examples of hussifs online. Mine is nowhere near as fancy though. I am fairly new to embroidery and so I focus more on "creativity" than accuracy. Which shows. 😂 Which kind of yarn do you prefer for blankets and such? I tend to use ones with at least 50 percent woolish fibre or pure cotton. I know acrylic has its benefits though.
At the moment I lean towards acrylic a lot - my kids use the blankets and they need washing often 😬. Good luck with your cardigan 🍀.
Great job of focusing on some WIPs and getting them done! I have a few WIPs that just need some finishing bits done, which I'm hoping to tackle during our Thanksgiving holiday break.
Thank you, and well done for setting yourself a goal - I find that it helps ☺️.
I desperately want to get my wips down and I'm hoping that a lot of finishing my wips will come from my current stash. I think I'm at something like 20+ wips (mine are mostly larger garments) and I've given myself till the end of next year to hopefully get my wips down to 4-6. We all know that new projects are always popping up! 😂😂 Today I'm about to finish the body of a sweater and then start a sleeve. Your video is super motivating!! Thank you!! ❤
I’m so glad that you enjoyed it ☺️. You got this! I definitely recommend trying the snowball method if you lose motivation at any point. Good luck with your sweater 🍀. Do any of your projects have deadlines to spur you on? Eg are any birthday/holiday gifts?
@elimeedesigns yes thankfully this one is a test knit due in 3 weeks! Then I have 7 baby blankets I want done in the next month, they are going well and will probably be done by then. But then I'll have to start a few new ones for Christmas gifts, I want to make crochet gnomes as teacher gifts 🤣😅 but that will help with stash busting!
Wow, loads of blankets too (my favourite kind of project 😁). I hope that finishing each of your projects brings you joy.
I kinda like the little wierd creature. Its cute
😂 thank you! I’m so glad that my awful amigurumi-assembly doesn’t put you off. I’ve made 3 similar themed patterns by Hookanory. Her mini-monster Halloween CAL (in progress atm) has a similar shape too. Do you make many amigurumi?
This old lady would accept any (non-animal, very allergic) yarn donations. I crochet for charity donations and my yarn stash is sorely lacking now and no income (waiting impatiently for retirement money to come hrough). Bless me with any you need to get rid of, please. I only use it for the needy and deserving - I do not sell anything.
That is so kind of you! We need more crocheters like you ☺️. If you are in the UK there are some charities that supply the yarn for you to crochet donations.
Lovely video. I enjoy watching and listening to you! The loud on-and-of music inbetween is what ruins it for me. Especially when it is added for short periods and cut off for short comment constantly. I don't know if you appreciate feedback, so I am sorry if you don't, but the parts where you talk are very enjoyable❤😊
Thank you ☺️, and I very much appreciate the feedback! I hope to improve with every video, and your feedback tells me how I can do this. Are you stashbusting too?
@@elimeedesigns Yes, I try to! To have a ginormous stash makes me stressed almost as if i had the same amount of wips. I have knitted ten sweaters from stash this year, and reduced it a lot, but still more to go.
Wow! That is a lot of sweaters. You must enjoy making them ☺️. Do you have a favourite pattern? I hope try try making my first sweater this winter.
@@elimeedesigns I loved the Stick season sweater by Rebecca Clow 😍 Would highly recommend it!
Thanks ☺️. I definitely love the cream version she has on Ravelry… and the Rhue sweater. I’m gonna have to watch out for rabbit holes 😂
How big is my yarn stash? I just bought another bookcase 🙄
I think that the more important question is whether your stash brings you joy (or causes any other issues for you)? There is nothing wrong with a large stash if you have the space, money, and love it ☺️
377.5 balls of yarn in your stash... Have fun! 🐞
😂 yeah, it’s going to be a long journey! Are you stashbusting too?
@@elimeedesigns At the moment I'm losing at "not growing the stash..." I'll probably be in busting mode in a couple more months, when all of me that's visible is my frantically waving hand... Have a great day. 🐞
Good luck 🍀
The game is taken a shot for every time the music is interrupted 😹😹😹😹
This is the best and easiest technique I've seen. Thank you!
Oh, thank you so much! What a lovely compliment ☺️. What project are you using it for?
I love my stash, but it is overwhelming. So many plastic boxes of yarn everywhere. I buy this gorgeous yarn and then get decision paralysis
A common phenomenon. Would you like to shrink it?
I made 3 blankets (one crochet that used 2 kg of yarn and 2 knitted that used 2,3 kg ) and crochet pillow cases ... and I had so much fun working with different colors, definitely recommend it! I cannot donate or gift and I'm happy to use every skein
Amazing! Blankets are definitely big yarn eaters ☺️. Do you have a favourite pattern?
@@elimeedesigns Chevron stitch or Chevron pattern is definitely my favorite, both in crochet and knitting!
It is definitely a classic!
i am just starting the holiday gift-making an suggest the crochet house slippers. there is a tutorial for them from stephanie zed. for an avarage pair ( eu size 39-42) you‘ll cross of 2 an a half skeins (100gr) of chunky yarn.(or thinner yarn held double) great gifts and quick to make ( 4days max)
Thank you for the lovely suggestion ☺️. Have you made many pairs?
@@elimeedesigns Oh Yes i did . two pairs standing right in front of me. But counting up from 2 years back i must be 20 pairs in …
Definitely a winner then!
Newbie subscriber… looking forward to getting some ideas too… good luck and productive Fall for us all. 👍🧶. I’m a hat and scarf knitter … love popping a row or two of accent colors.. Also make scrap blankets to donate..
Welcome ☺️. Scrap blankets are definitely in my wheelhouse lol. I’m hoping to start making some Christmas gifts too. Have you started preparing yet?
Beautiful, gifted 🎉
Thank you so much ☺️. I love making blankets.
To use up my scrap, I'm making crotchet pumpkins and a mystic lantern blanket .
Thank you for the suggestions ☺️. Are you a big blanket fan?
@@elimeedesigns I am , I love a pretty blanket ,and any I can also use scraps for is a winner .
Me too!
I just posted a video of my charity hats for 2024, they are great stash busters! I always double strand those. Another idea is the Scrappy yarn baskets, using a larger hook - you can strand 3-4 together, making the basket more sturdy.
Thank you for the suggestion. I’ll have to check out your video ☺️. Which charity do you donate to?
New watcher so I don't know how keen you are on baskets but I love making scrap yarn baskets. They help hideaway current wips and you can make them any size you want depending on your need and/or decor.
Thank you for your suggestion. I am a BIG blanket fan, and have a C2C scrapgan in progress at the moment 😁. Which stitch do you use for yours?
Knitted knockers are another great charity. Great to help women who have had a mastectomy and stash bust too. The pattern uses very little yarn App. Fifty yards, i believe, but they are particular about fiber. There is a list of approved yarn brands because they are worn against very delicate skin. They have a crochet and knit version.
That sounds like a very worthy cause 😁
Not a quick answer but a pretty thorough plan for me has been a temperature blanket. I'm not being too careful about color continuity (bright red may have a few different yarns), so I'm going through a ton of dk(ish) yarn! There's also a good FB group for support & ideas :) Oh, and a seaglass sweater will come soon after. The pattern for my blanket was inspired by that style!
Oh that sounds lovely! I’d love to see them when you’re done ☺️
What about starting an ongoing giant granny square? You can work your leftovers into that when you need something mindless and can always donate them to alzheimers care facilities
I’m sort of doing that already, but I’m using C2C (I’m not a huge granny stitch fan 😬). I plan to do a moss stitch after too.
Great video. My stash is overwhelming, at 88 large totes. I'm trying to decide how to attack this stash/hoard. I'm working on it slowly, but trying to decide whether to sell or give away a good sized chunk. I should with the stuff that actually hurts to use (arthritis), but it's all yarn I really wanted when I purchased it. Thank you and take care.
Thank you for sharing your story. I agree it is hard, but I don’t regret donating the yarn that caused me pain - self-care is important. Be kind to yourself. Slowly chipping away at it is moving in the right direction. Maybe pick a cause close to your heart so that it feels good to let it go?
I need to join you on this journey! I am desperately trying to stash down. Most of my stash is 4ply/sock weight. I am holding yarns double to make a dk weight for a blanket, knitting lots of socks and scarves/wraps. I have sold a few skeins but not nearly enough!
It sounds like you’ve been working hard on destashing 👏. Any sock pattern recommendations?
@@elimeedesigns I’ve recently purchased the 52 weeks of socks book but I think most are going to be too complicated for me! I’m generally a vanilla socks kind of girl 🧦
I’ve only tried vanilla-style socks so far too lol. I’m saving up my best sock yarn for knitting socks - my current knitting goal (I’m very beginner atm). I’ll have to take a gander at the book and dream!
This video is really inspiring! I'm setting parameters around any new yarn purchases and going to work on a lot of baby blankets soon (I have to catch up on a few that have already been born)! I find that making patchwork heart or flower granny square blankets really burn through yarn and are great for using up those little pieces as the heart or petals.
Thank you! And thank you for the suggestion. I hope that you have fun crocheting your baby blankets - they're one of my favourite projects :) How many do you have left to make?
@elimeedesigns I've got 7 baby blankets to do 😅🫠 thankfully that should make a decent dent in my stash!!
😮 hopefully you’ve got a fun pattern or few to follow!
You can make some blankets for the homeless or senior shelters and donate them? You did a great destashing👍
Aww thank you. I definitely plan to donate some of my blankets - I love making them but already have four boxes full lol. Do you have a particular shelter or charity that you support?
@@elimeedesigns Please check out Boggy Creek Camp. It is a Camp for ill children to have fun and vacation with their whole family and all the medicine stuff is there for them. There is a Boggy Blanket Brigade build of some You Tubers for example Juan the yarn addict, Nina ´s Knots Crochets, She ´s got yarn 2, Billy the Crafty Floridian….. every child who was in Boggy Creek Camp gets a blanket and is allowed to take it. There are some measurements you should follow, but yarn or scrap yarn / bride colours for the children or all in blue…..which pattern? The one you like👍 senior shelters in your area or for the homeless or woman shelters or foster care…..there are so many who would love to get your awesome blankets. In my area I asked people for their yarn ( who stayed in their homes for no use ). We are crocheting and knitting for the homeless people all warm clothes from the donated yarn. We also knit and crochet some blankets (granny squares or C 2 C,…). In December we make an auction with the blankets and the money will be donated to several groups. The Crochet- / Knitgroup is since July 2024. We are 12 people already and it is so much fun. Maybe this is something for you? Also a good way to destash😀🧶
Thank you for your suggestions - I will definitely check them out. And thank you for the fabulous work that you do!
Loved watching! For me the music is way too loud but if I lower it and I cannot hear what you say. 😢
Oh no, I’m so sorry. I’ll try my best to adjust it for the next video.
Good luck with your destashing journey! Tunisian crochet is a very good way for that as it eat up much more yarn. Some of Toni Lipsey's blankets will be the easiest way to get ride of multiple colours and having gorgeous Christmas gift for some of your beloved.
Thank you so much for the suggestion. I’ve not tried much Tunisian yet, so I’ll take a look ☺️
Is there a particular design that you would recommend?
@@elimeedesigns she has several Tunisian crochet blankets on her YT channel and for free on her blog. One of them is called the Mulberry Afghan (in her TH-cam.m it’s just called Tunisian crochet baby blanket.) But she gives you the multiple so you can make it any size. In that video, I noticed she’s using the same mandala ombre yarn you held up toward the beginning of this video! That would be a really pretty type of yarn to use combined with a solid color.
Thank you for your reply. I’ll start browsing 😁
Gosh, iam so jealous of that yarn stash. I wish I had half of what you have there.
Thank you so much! 😊 I definitely feel fortunate to have built up such a big stash over time, but I can totally understand how it might seem like a dream! Honestly though, having a large stash can feel overwhelming at times, especially when trying to keep it organized or figuring out what to use it for. That’s why I’m excited about stashbusting - it’s helping me get creative and reduce the pile! It’s all about finding the right balance that works for you. 💕 What projects are you working on with your yarn right now?
Thank you so much for this wonderful pattern. I'm new to mosaic crochet but you were clear in your instructions. Beautiful work!

Does this work with a double crochet stitch? I mean, to make the join just a bit thicker and visible? or in that case is it better to use another technique?
Yes it does ☺️.

Do you have a project in mind to try it out?
