Who Will Win the Fusion Race?
มุมมอง 16Kปีที่แล้ว
In the bizarro relay marathon that is the fusion race, the baton is firmly in the hands of the startups. The outcome, to be sure, is still uncertain, but the question isn’t whether humanity will achieve commercial fusion, but which companies will, with which approaches, when? Fusion, many believe, will be one of humanity’s greatest triumphs: we will be able to generate energy in the same way th...

Now I know who google AI podcasts model was inspired on
I don't think startups are going to get to net positive energy before government funded labs.
We've been trying to make a vision/fusion energy plant sins 1945 it is 2025. Literally the LONGEST throughout history that WE have TRY to is perfect anything. We suck at it
We still have 10 company making 10 DIFFERENT KINFDS of FUSION. That tels ME that we STILL KNOW very LITTLE about how to do it
Lol fusion will always be 160 YEARS AWAYS untill it is IS FINALLY HERE.
Q Total, please? Why does this so-called 'industry' keep using deceptively Qp (Q-Plasma) gains as an indicator of energy gains when the total is smaller than the energy used to power the reactor? No one has been able to gain more energy out than the energy expended to operate the reactor. Nobody nor their experiments in all their forms have been able to achieve this, and everyone deceives the public with QP energy gains, Including ITER, which won't be able to either, yet they deceptively speak of a 50 to 500 Mgw ratio. I find this so deceptive: QT < Qp. So stop saying fusion works.

Fusion bullshit-ists
Great to see this follow up. Consider finding funding for a super deep dive on the waste/proliferation/accident issues, from many angles, as that might be what we really need to get clear enough to make collective intelligent choices going forward...
Only 19 years away now
It can if people really want it. It can be done the same way every other technology was eventually made cheap and ubiquitous. Through standardization, modularity too but mostly standardization.
There is a difference between accidents at nuclear and non nuclear. When a non nuclear plant blows up, it is a short time issue. When nuclear goes bad, the land becomes uninhabitable for thousands of years. So that the issue. Ask all those people who had to evacuate from Pripyat and the other 67k people who had to be relocated. Also how many square miles can't be used for farm land? No we don't need more power so we can have more people. We don't have homes or food for the people we have. That's the issue. Power is the last thing we need. Food and housing first. Once we get that, then we look forward.
This is slanted towards nuclear energy because they are financially vested. That said, oil and coal are not the answers either. But nuclear is certainly not the answer. This is proven by decades of of nuclear waste, of no way of getting rid of it, leaks and toxic dumps on U.S. soil that the Government trys to hide from the public. Some advocates use propaganda to make people believe in "Clean Nuclear Energy" . The French came up with clean nuclear by washing spent rods off in a French river that empties into the ocean..... All they were doing was putting the radiation into the river and into the ocean. Do your own research. The piracy off of Somalia is due to many countries over fishing those waters, then several countries dumping thousands of barrels of nuclear waste into those same waters. Including the U.S.A..... So of course those people did whatever they had to do to feed their families.
This program is lies. Propaganda financed by those who profit from nuclear power. Explain: Rocky Flats Environmental Test Site. Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory, Idaho Falls Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant Fallon Naval Air Station Hanford Reservation, Richland These are just a few of the trouble spots in the U.S. where radioactivity is high from spills, leaks, and use. This radioactivity directly causes multiple types of cancers. DO THE RESEARCH YOURSELVES. Do not believe these people. They are being paid to lie.
Anybody else getting princess bride vibes from the room Packy is in?
You have deliberately chosen to immerse yourselves in techo-optimism in order to dodge depressive thoughts, as have millions of others. You’ve learned to gravitate to echo chamber information bubbles that reinforce what you prefer to believe in. This has become your reality. The process involves avoiding virtually all critical assessments that challenge those beliefs. It involves the omission of past optimistic endeavors that never led to commercially practical products. It relies heavily upon the optimism of youth who lack a lengthy historical perspective of the failed endeavors of the past. It is based on an opportunistic exploitation of most people’s craving for hope, to secure financial rewards. All promoters of nuclear energy are in line with the vast majority of the Earth’s 8.0+ billion humans who have masterfully excluded the following warnings from their consciousness. They continue to assume that we have at least 20 years left to turn this ‘Titanic’ around, through the use of their favorite technology. I urge readers to search for the following two article titles. IPCC report: ‘now or never’ if world is to stave off climate disaster (TheGuardian) UN chief: World has less than 2 years to avoid 'runaway climate change' (TheHill) * This statement was made 5.8 years ago.
How bout noooooooo
Would be nice if it can be made to work
This promotional presentation depended almost exclusively on nuclear fusion energy fans as is the case with most of the funders. The hosts didn't have a deep enough technical background in this field to ask deeply probing 'critical assessment' questions. They frequently used the term Q, one of the descriptive terms for energy gain, and the term 'ignition' which is not at all like the striking of a fire-match head where it consume all the fuel on the match head. The Q value that the physicists are referring to is Q-plasma, which is the energy that is directly delivered to heat the plasma. In the case of the December 5, 2022, laser shot at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) the announced Q value was approximately 1.2. That value excluded the amount of energy that was needed to drive the laser system which was over 100 times greater than what heated the plasma. In the case of all nuclear fusion energy experimental programs the cost effectiveness is still over a million times less than what is needed to create a competitively practical electricity generating power plant. Those who are seeking near term funding tend to be masterful at obscuring this fact. The vast majority of experimental machines do not employ a deuterium/tritium fuel mixture in their experiments and so they don't generate any significant level of fusion reactions. This includes the Wendelstein 7-X machine mentioned in this video. Most people have been told the hydrogen fuel is plentiful. The tritium is both very rare and radioactive. The current commercial price for it is approximately $30,000 per gram. The Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) SPARC machine is intended to be a pulsed tokamak and almost all tokamak-like designs are expected to operate in a pulsed mode when operating at their maximum power levels. SPARC is designed to operate for ten-seconds and then turn off for a recovery period which could be much longer. The Q-plasma value of SPARC only applies to the 'on' period of time so the net energy gain (Q-total) could be substantially less than the gain figure provided to the press once it begins operation using D/T fuel. It is not designed to demonstrate electrical energy production, or tritium fuel production. This video's mention of the Z-Machine and the NIF failed to point out that both machines have always been primarily funded for work related to thermonuclear weapons (H-bomb) research. Over $11-billion in federal revenues have already been sunk into NIF. It was supposed to achieve its goal of a 'breakeven' fusion reaction by 2012 but missed the mark by a factor of over 100. Most of the gains were made in tweaking the target dynamics, as mentioned in this video. It took a decade to do that work. No specifics were given. The target capsule was constructed of a hollow diamond sphere that is nearly perfectly flawless. Hundreds of the spheres are manufactured because only a tiny percent meet the demanding precision specifications. The rest are discarded. It's been estimated that the target assembly, that is largely vaporized by the laser shot, cost around $100,000 USD. The announced experiment generated enough fusion energy to boil two liters of water. It took a week to prepare the experiment and the resulting fusion reaction lasted for approximately 0.000,000,000,08 second. About 96% of the extremely expensive D/T fuel was blasted away from the reaction center before it had a chance to react. The lab has had great difficulties repeating such experiments. Those, promoting using fusion neutrons to irradiate spent nuclear fuel (SNF) from fission power reactors, tend to conveniently exclude some key problems with such schemes. A major issue is that the first that fuel will likely have to undergo extensive and very expensive chemical reprocessing and then a re-fabrication step. The fission product isotopes will likely still need to be removed and then disposed of in a deep geological radioactive waste repository. The host should have asked the contributors, from Proxima Fusion, if they had a working machine yet and if so what the quantity of fusion reactions they have achieve, expressed in terms of Joules. Zap Energy is also engaged in much fusion hype despite the fact that they never have achieved any significant level of fusion reactions. They have never employed D/T fuel and they have experienced difficulties with electrode erosion during their short series of test shots. The above video entrepreneurs have little interest in pointing out difficulties in this promotional video. Helion Energy's Dr. David Kirkley is a master sales pitchman who relies heavily upon descriptions that are loaded with arcane technical terms to impress others. Their latest operating machine is their 6th generation machine called Trenta which has performed around 20,000 experimental shots. Helion has provided no evidence that any of the shots produced any significant amount of fusion reactions, or generated any helium-3, or tritium. They haven't stated that once they achieve fusion reactions how long they expect them to last, in in terms of nano-seconds, before the forces of the reaction blows the rest of the supplied fuel away from the reaction center. They have yet to explain how the un-fused radioactive tritium will be dealt with as it gets sucked into the vacuum system. Some of the fusion reactions will result in a significant amount of energy being deposited in the kinetic energy of fusion neutrons. They haven't mentioned that that energy will be lost due to the neutral charge of the neutrons. Since they expect the future power plant to operate at a continuous rate of ten shots per second it would be useful to know how long the fusion reactions will last since if it is around a nanosecond then then a power plant, that is designed to generate 100 Mega-watts of electrical energy would need to generate fusion pulses in the Giga-watt region. That would be extremely challenging in numerous ways, including the designing the fast switching power electronics needed to handle that. Nuclear fusion energy fans tend to immerse themselves in echo chamber information bubbles that reinforce what they prefer to believe in. Typically those sources exclude key issues such as the ones I've mentioned above. Virtually all nuclear energy promoters, are in line with the vast majority of Earth's other 8.0+ billion humans, who continue to assume that we still have at least 20 years left to turn this 'Titanic' around using their favorite nuclear technology. They have become masterful in excluding the following warnings from their consciousness. I urge readers to search for the following two article titles. IPCC report: ‘now or never’ if world is to stave off climate disaster (TheGuardian) UN chief: World has less than 2 years to avoid 'runaway climate change' (TheHill) * This statement was made 5.8 years ago.
Ask yourself the following. Why is it that tens-of-thousands of people assume that all the remaining barriers will be overcome within the next decade? Why don’t most of the fans understand that the experimental quest began during the 1950s? They tend to never question what key facts are omitted from slick promotional videos, such as that posted by Helion Energy and those doing follow-up reports on their promoting efforts. Helion’s 6th generation machine is Trenta. It has produced about 20,000 shots. The interviewing hosts never ask if it has ever produced a single watt of fusion energy, if it has generated a single milligram of helium-3, or a single milligram of radioactive tritium. They never ask how long, in billionths-of-a-second, the future fusion reactions are expected to last before being snuffed out by the extremely energetic reaction. The future shots are expected to occur about ten times each second but the fusion reaction may last at least a million times less than that time period. If a power plant is designed to generate 100 megawatts on average then each pulse of fusion reactions would need to deliver energy in the range of many giga-watts. Will the electromagnets and switching electronics be capable of handling that at very fast rates? Once the fusion reaction begins it will not proceed until all the available fuel is consumed. The propagation will not be like a match head burning. The use, of the term ‘ignition’ has been deliberately misleading. The nuclear fusion energy experimental history has already consumed over a trillion USD. Billions are now being spent on it each year. It has become a big competitive business in securing more funding. That process has brought about greed and deceptions.
The UN chief in question being a business major. Reliable source I guess 🤷. Let's shut off all our industries guys. Climate alarmists are just plain dumb. Worst part is these morons will shout from the mountains top but when real solutions get proposed like sulfur injection. They oppose it because at the end this is about their deep seated hatred for humanity that comes from their own personal lives.
Lol since it started in the 50s. I guess it means it's impossible guys. Our understanding hasn't improved at all 😆. People should look at me the smarty pants that expects trenta a prototype to produce net energy. Nvm the fact that wasn't even the aim of the device.
Also good job on confusing joules with watts.
@@Manosdepiedra1979 All these devices are experimental in nature. It is erroneous to refer to any of them as being ‘prototypes.’ That is done to attract investors to the projects who are expecting to get a return on their investment within the next decade. Everyone knows that it has become standard practice to often deceive others in the process of trying to attract funders. Many of today’s young fusion energy fans assume that new tools, such as AI and fabulous computer modeling are bound to overcome all the remaining numerous barriers that remain in this nuclear fusion power plant quest. It seems to never occur to them that two previous generation of fusion energy experimenters that preceded them felt just as confident as today’s experimental youth are now. Many of those experimental efforts only got funded after demonstrating how strong their math modeling indicated that they were very close to creating an economically competitive nuclear fusion pilot electricity power plant. CFS’s SPARC machine is being promoted as a ‘prototype’ for ARC which CFS claims will be the first nuclear fusion energy power plant, that will produce far more energy than is required to operate the facility and it will also generate 100 megawatts of electrical energy that will feed into the regional electricity grid. They just announced it will feed a utility company grid located in the State of Virginia. Fact: SPARC is a greatly reduced version of ARC which major key components, typical in power plant configurations, will be absent. SPARC is far smaller than the planned ARC fusion reactor. Apparently, the directors realized that ARC would take to long to implement so they stripped the ARC design down to create an experimental machine that demonstrate sooner results. SPARC is even missing key power reactor features such as a rapid heat removal system. It also doesn’t have a tritium breeding blanket experiment planned. Most new fusion startups had assumed that the ITER fusion experiment in France would answer all the remaining questions regarding breeding their reactor tritium fuel. Now those startups have learned that the ITER project is greatly delayed and that their tritium breeding experiments will not begin until 2040, if at all. The breeding component is essential since the current value of the tritium fuel component is greater than $30,000 per gram. Never forget the frequent fan claims that the hydrogen fusion fuel is virtually limitless.
You people are not that smart. I did fusion with my star device and reported it to the government, and they covered it up and will not do anything about it. Check out Richard Mullers STAR Fusion Reactor on Exotic Propulsion.
No people, the inertial confinement Q is just laser energy over fusion out and does not account for the energy input to produce the lasers such energy is very high for one of the most ineficient energies to produce!!
What does Helion Energy disaster recovery options look like. I sure don't like the following - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascadia_subduction_zone

You don't need multiday storage, and there are way better options than batteries: gravity storage and heat storage are a lot better
world's worst wallpaper ever....
thank you, economy will rise by using jet plasma machine and compressed gas(Air) in isolated structure in water pool with more than 80 % efficiency , it transfers compressed gas(hot air) temperature from engine to water, New energy from sea will change world soon, there are other source of energy that with international cooperation in coastline we can reduce effect of global warming, sea is huge source of energy, further more we can prevent these phenomena like cyclone and flood and wildfire by using this hot seasonal atmospheric condition, recent years in summer, geothermal energy happens in surface of coastline, there are many countries in coastline with seasonal hot weather and water condition in comparison with middle Ocean, its more than 12 degrees , in sum-up, by using this energy not only is economical but also reduce global warming in countries like Japan, China, India, Mediterranean countries, Iran, Brazil, Mexico, Us, Canada, (Africa and Arabian countries....) . I invented new method base on air pressure rules and quantum physics ionization sea water minerals in strong dynamic magnet bases on paramagnetic and diamagnetic particles and electrical microwave wave field and electric chemical reactions (K+, Mg++, Na+, H+, H++, li+, H2, ...) +( O2, N2, ...) into up level by vacuum pump from storage into combustion chambers as major part of fuel (more than 50%) for producing electricity and fresh water and fertilizer. this machine produces 150Megwatt-hour/hour and 20000M3/DAY fresh water and fertilizer. 7 methods zero pollution for reducing global warming I mentioned in my profile. (G20 countries can solve these phenomena).
I don’t believe anyone in this video has ever built anything.
Helion built 6 ever larger prototypes so far. Their last one, Trenta was the first private fusion effort to reach 100 million degrees C.
@@elmarmoelzer2229- Despite the Trenta being Helion’s 6th generation machine that has performed about 20,000 experimental pulses they still haven’t demonstrated that any one of those shots achieved even one watt of fusion energy. Nor have they demonstrated any production of helium-3, tritium , or any other fusion byproducts. Typically nuclear fusion energy fans have no interest in probing behind such slick promotional pitches.
@@vernonbrechin4207 1. The exact results of Trenta are not public but their investors had them peer reviewed by reviewers from Sandia, Los Alamos and Reno, etc, etc before they handed out the big bucks for Polaris. The fact that they handed out 500 million (with another 1.7 billion to go if Helion meets their milestones), should be telling. 2. That is - once again - complete BS. Helion extracts and examines the fusion products from their machines between pulses. The composition of the fusion products is a great data point (among many) to confirm your results. Results from a single diagnostic point, no matter how sophisticated, can be mistaken and misinterpreted. It is the big picture of multiple data points that is important. And the fusion products are one important data point. If you think you have been getting somewhere in the 10^20ies of D-D fusion reactions per pulse and you can not find the fusion products to match that estimate, you have a serious problem!
Another scam project, there will be nothing to show for the millions wasted on this.
Helion Energy's CEO David Kirkley is a master sales pitchman for the series of projects that many investors have supported because they rely exclusively upon critical assessments created by nuclear fusion energy fans. Those, in this esoteric field, tend to immerse themselves in echo chamber information sources in order to reinforce their preexisting views. Few have any incentives to search for critical assessment of these projects that they have come to love. Kirkley has made progress claims that have later proven wrong. Helion withholds many key details, claiming that they are proprietary information. One detail is quantitive parameters of the number of fusion reactions their multitude of experiments have produced. Most fusion advocates have learned to capitalize on the public fear of global warming to gain public and private support for the technological projects that give them joy. I urge readers to search for the following critical assessment title on TH-cam. The problems with Helion Energy - a response to Real Engineering --- Virtually all nuclear energy promoters, are in line with the vast majority of Earth's other 8.0+ billion humans, who continue to assume that we still have at least 20 years left to turn this 'Titanic' around using their favorite nuclear technology. They have become masterful in excluding the following warnings from their consciousness. I urge readers to search for the following two article titles. IPCC report: ‘now or never’ if world is to stave off climate disaster (TheGuardian) UN chief: World has less than 2 years to avoid 'runaway climate change' (TheHill) * This statement was made 5.6 years ago.
What we have in this channel are people who have chosen to maintain an optimistic outlook no matter how dire the warnings become. They deliberately choose to immerse themselves in echo chamber stories that reinforce what they crave believing in. The world is filled with opportunists and many find joy, and success, in capitalizing upon the increasing cravings for hope for the future.
Your right, you should prove them wrong by finding the nearest high rise. Degrowth must start at the home.
@@Manosdepiedra1979 - I prefer watching as billions of people bring forth innocent offspring into a world that will soon likely turn to hell for them. The parents are driven by their personal cravings rather than the dire warnings that keep impeding upon their lives. Since everyone seems to be caught up in the same process they know that they must be right.
@@vernonbrechin4207 That "Insane Cravings" you call it is what pushed humanity to new heights and new standards of living that our ancestors could only have dreamed off. It's the same craving that will save humanity and if you want a prime example of this. You should look to countries in the east like China. It's a industrial powerhouse and It still managed to slash down its impact massively despite increases in demand and it will do so. This is not some insurmountable challenge that humanity can't handle. It's disgraceful that people think it is and it's even sadder that this wave of cynicism is emerging from the West specially given the region's tremendous achievements in the past. I say this as an immigrant. Degrowth will do nothing for the people in the West other than accelerate its demise.
@@vernonbrechin4207 I have a son. I do everything, I can to prepare him for life and to give him a head start. That is all a parent can ever do. But, I am also old enough to know what my grandparents and even my parents went through. It is stuff people who grew up in the US can never understand or even imagine: Kids playing in rubble and bomb craters with discarded weapons and duds everywhere. Even I still went skiing and (actually) enjoyed using bomb craters for jumping and stunts. People today have no idea how bad things were even 80 years ago. The average human is living a MUCH better life today than anyone did even 30 years ago. They are eating better, healthier and cleaner food. They work fewer hours. They enjoy technology that even my parents would be science fiction for centuries to come. And... yes climate change is bad. I agree with that. BUT, we have technology to mitigate the effects (or even reverse it) that is beyond the imagination of people 30 years ago. I believe that humanity can overcome any challenge and prosper at the same time. This stupid, pointless doom and gloom helps no one. It does not make anything better. It just is the self-pity and weakness of those propagating it (and applauding themselves for it). You are not helping anything. You are not contributing towards improving the future. You are worthless. You are useless. Just go and play dinosaur already and die out! We don't need you! You will be dead and forgotten in a generation from now. Meanwhile the children of this generation will live on. Some will die earlier. Some will live longer. It is hard to predict. I myself know that I won't live forever. I know that my time here is very limited. But I can prepare my offspring for the future as much as possible. I can give them values and knowledge (limited as it may be) and try to give them a head start by providing them with a good education. That requires personal sacrifice. Yeah, I could spend more time partying and enjoying (pointless) leisure. So what? On the grander scale, me and my personal pleasure are irrelevant. What will live on is my children and their children. Just like every single generation did since the very first self-replicating DNA molecule. That is the key to eternity. Everything else is essentially Ozymandias, irrelevant, forgotten, buried in the sand of time.
Billions of people have chosen not to closely follow the detailed trends with Anthropogenic Climate Disruption (ACD) because it is too depressing. The U.S. president was provided the first climate change report in 1965. That is likely at least two decades before you were born. Most people have come to assume that all the technological advances we have made since then are making a significant difference. Green marketing has played a role in that impression. The simple fact is that the greenhouse gas atmospheric concentrations keep climbing rapidly and within two decades the global average temperature is likely to exceed the catastrophic level of 2.0 °C where multiple positive feedback effects will prevent any chance of recovery. Most people assume our technology will save us, that threshold tipping points don’t exist and that it will never be too late for humans to reverse the deadly trend.

I remember reading about fusion when I was a kid that is 50 or 60 years ago. It is about time we perfected it and depended less on oil and uranium.
I'm missing Gauss Fusion. Unlike Proxima, Gauss focuses to go directly to a stellarator-based power plant. No more experiments, use all the gathered knowledge and try a best shot.
Forget more fission - it's too expensive and dangerous for the average consumer. Emphasis should be on renewables with fusion as a future option, hopefully.
There Earth is already supplied with all its energy needs by an extremely powerful nuclear fusion source - the Sun, which has been up and running for aeons.
Helion Energy is a criminal swindle! Fusion energy is a lie based on Einstein's Relativity fantasy! The stars do NOT run on fusion and these fusion reactors are threat to all life in their vicinity. The promise of fusion will never come true but the swindle goes on and on ...
What is 50 MW? Is it consumes or generates , electricity or heat?
Their goal for their standard machines is 50 MWe. That means 40 MW electric output.
Julia's top looks like a CRT image with a noisy horizontal drive.
Fission, here, now, safe, abundant, no new physics needed, and CHEAP!
ITER = FSC = Falacy of sunk costs
The real reason for excitement now is that serious work, likely to work, is being done to remedy the plasma instability problems that have plagued Tokamaks up until now.
Okay not again, Fusion is a 67-year-old scam!..... Most Americans know and realize this so take it somewhere else.
Love the series, thank you! I'm a high-schooler who's interested in the field, and it's great to see more people coming to their senses and realizing nuclear is the way to go.
