In medieval times in the dry regions, they used to create two types of water sources - simple well, and step-well. From simple wells water could be harvested from outside, while in step-well people could walk down to the water level through stairs.
The wealthy often used to build such step-wells to make provision of water for people. At the same time, they used to provide employment to the architects, artisans, and construction workers. Thus, the name of those wealthy people used to become memorable for the centuries to come.
Dai Harir’s name is one such immortal name, who used to be the custodian of the harem of the Sultan Abul Fatah Nasiruddin Mahmood Shah. She commissioned the construction of this beautiful stepwell. Which is known as Dada Harir’s step-well.
There are more than 120 step-wells in Gujarat. But one at Patan, one at Adalaj, and this one is the jewels of the crown.
Its construction was completed in 1499 AD. The entrance to the well is covered with a beautifully ornate dome built with stone. The way they built five stories underground taking care of light and air still awe inspires us even in modern times. The entire structure is firmly supported with pillars and beams of stone which are ornate with rather intricate carvings.
Next to the well, there is also a beautiful mosque commissioned by Dai Harir. The artisans have not given us any reason to allow the onlooker can criticize. Both are just synonymous with excellence.
