Episode 176 Well Formed Coaching Outcomes
176 Well Formed Coaching Outcomes
As we settle into the new year, we dive into a powerful tool from Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) that’s designed to help you set well-formed coaching outcomes. Whether you're supporting clients or working on your personal goals, this structured approach helps ensure goals are both achievable and meaningful.
In this episode, we reflect on the importance of setting goals that are fully within our control. Many of us-and our clients-fall into the trap of creating goals tied to external factors, like a promotion or financial gain, which often leads to stress and frustration. Instead, we focus on crafting goals that are actionable, inspiring, and fully achievable.
We guide you step-by-step through a framework of eight essential questions that can help create clarity and motivation. These questions can be used in coaching sessions to transform vague aspirations into tangible, inspiring outcomes. Jo shares how small language shifts-like reframing a client’s "I don’t want" statement into "I want"-can unlock surprising insights. We also discuss how vividly imagining success can ignite energy and motivation, making the goal feel within reach.
As coaches, our job isn’t just to help clients dream big but to anchor those dreams into practical steps that fit their values, resources, and reality. Along the way, we share examples from our sessions, like how sensory-based questions-“What will you hear when you succeed?”-can reveal unexpected details that deepen a client’s connection to their goal.
The conversation ends with a reminder to apply these questions to your own life. As we step into 2025, how might you create well-formed outcomes for yourself?

Wonderful insights! And validating. I’ve been a coach for a few years now and I was pleased to hear that much of what you shared are things I’ve adopted and implemented along the way. Listening to other coaches offer advice can sometimes feel intimidating, as if they systematically learned all their wisdom over time from a guide. For myself, it’s been a lesson here, another lesson there, and eventually sitting down and going, “Ok, how do I best help a coachee through the process.” Happy to see that the approach I’ve come to use is very much in line with this.

Nice video your content is really good 👍 but I saw your videos thumbnail need some improvement . I'm a professional thumbnail designer, currently working with established TH-camrs like Dr. Tanvi Mayur Patel (361k subs), Dr. Sahaj Joshi (215k subs), and Healthy Forever (77k subs). I believe with the right thumbnails, your content could reach even more viewers. I'd love to help you level up your channel’s visual appeal. Looking for your response ☺️

I love the question you gave of “are you the character or the author of this story?” A lot of my clients have ADHD, so verbal processing is a big part of that, but this has given me some great tools to take this further. Thank you!

I'm currently studying to be a coach, and I've also been trying for some time to develop my intuition. I was surprised to find it mentioned by Julie Starr as one of the 5 core skills of a coach, and this podcast has been really helpful in expanding on that and understanding how to develop and use it. Thank you.

Hello my friend, I recently came across your TH-cam channel and was impressed by the quality of your content. However, after conducting a comprehensive analysis, I noticed there is room for improvement for your TH-cam channel to get more visitors and subscribers. • Your Video Title and description needs to be improved • You need to use more relevant tags and keywords • Organic promotion of Top social media • High-ranking tag setup (keyword, hashtag) If you want I can do a free TH-cam channel audit for you for your better understanding.

Thank you for this conversation, it came at just the right moment. I needed inspiration while helping one client think through why they should/could embark on maturing their learning models, engaging coaching in a less ad-hoc way and instead more connected with their growth objectives and needs (as yet undefined....workshops coming). I work as an independent coach and needed to stop and lift my head back up to think this through, and this discussion helped a lot. Appreciated.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this episode and found it very helpful as i am in the process of having to choose a mentor from amongst 3 of the best coaches i was given to help guide with my ILM 7 coaching tasks. Its tough choosing one out of 3, but i do hope after our chemistry session I'll be in a better position to pick the best coach who'll be more suited to taking our relationship where I'll like it to be. Thanks for this video.

And then we would realise that and ask a different question. For many clients approaching their challenges from unexpected and radical perspectives unlocks powerful new insight. If that’s not for you, your coach would adapt to your needs and try another approach.
