I would appreciate your input on this… Why do most companies set a ( trigger depth) to respond? Also many snow contractors allow the client to call them when salt or sanding is needed..I feel it is better to allow snow contractor to have control of when to salt and sand as by the time you get a call from client, a slippery situation could be hours old..
You need a trigger to dictate when services should be performed. In snow removal snow WILL accumulate! it has to. but the trigger is set so that there is a clear understanding at what point you will service. Trigger and response time are two different things. Regarding your second concern. Those that do on call work don't know the best way to run a snow business for salting. We are in the slip and fall prevention business. If you wait for a client to call you to salt, it is too late and the site is probably really slippery and or someone has fallen or almost fallen. You are the professional...Not your client. You need to make the decisions...Period. Any other client is not the type you want and leaves you open to risk.
We have the same issues with management companies charging too little. I offer them to do it with the equipment and crew I recommend them show them what they will get with the low price. Like a 10 acre lot I would have at least two loaders with a skid and side walk machine. But some of these companies only want to pay for a single loader or less. So that’s what I give them and it’s in the contract that is what they get for that price. It’s crazy to me. Some customers will complain that we don’t have enough equipment and I just tell them this is what the management company paid for if they want more equipment they can talk to us next year.
don't let the client dictate how many pieces of equipment you use. Just put a set price. doesn't matter if you send one piece or 3. It is our goal to clear as quickly and efficiently as possible. I don't really understand you question because if you have one loader on one site for x hours, but you have two on the same site and can do it in half the time, you should be able to charge the same, or minimally more to do it in half the time with double the equipment.
@ it wasn’t a question. I was saying that the management companies get what they pay for. If they want to only pay for one loader on a site that’s what I put on the site. When they complain I tell them that’s what they paid for if they want more they can pay for more. It’s how I have been doing it for the last 6 years.
Music's too loud I can't hear what you're saying😢
You are smoking crack, making $1200 an hour per truck plowing snow. Nobody is stupid enough to pay that.

Totally agree...constantly thinking about your buisness an what u need or need to do or what can be better an hundreds of more thoughts turned to actions.i see what u have going from the outside i can only imagine .especially the high risk ice prevention.Great video way to keep it real an authentic
If I ran my business the same way I did 21 years ago, I wouldn't have lasted 2 years. Always learning, changing and adapting. Thanks for the comment.
Great video, follow your dreams, your passionate about snow chase that! Seems like everyone with a truck does junk removal now. Create a snow life, you got this
Thanks for your comment and support. I know we briefly talked about this back in sept. You always have to adapt in business. Even this season for winter, I had to re evaluate. I was able to grow my client list by 30%. Sometimes you gotta look yourself in the mirror and realize only you can fix or change this...and then get er done! My success rate was only 30% for new bids, so I have areas to improve. Onward and upward!
Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to your snowplowing videos.
No problem, thanks for the comment!
Cool video! I enjoy watching these during snow season You should do some videos on your junk removal buisiness too!
I appreciate the comment. There are way too many people in the junk removal industry and way too many you tubers. I feel I can only give back for the snow removal guys.
None of my 6 weather apps showed anywhere after 3 pm it was gonna be less than 2° :(
This is a bit where experience can play a role. We were quite confident that it was going to be 0 or colder last night even though some forecasts were +2. What made it easier to decide was looking at the forecast for the following two days. We were willing to bet that even if it didn’t hit 0 last night, that it would tonight or tomorrow night. Therefore, last nights salting will cover those nights as well. We hit -1 at all our sites, so we are in the clear, but I am still going to watch and see what happens tomorrow morning and the next morning and see if our prediction was on point. ;)
Very good. Ty my man.
My pleasure.
I feel like I’ve had this conversation with 20+ strata’s at-least this year They seem to grab the lowest bid and then let you that they are not prepared at all financially
Had a friend who's dads business went bankrupt because of sometimes similar. They bid a monthly job at 2k instead of 20k. For whatever reason they couldn't get out of the contract and eventually had to shut down.
Nice truck! Question for you? What’s better steel or poly/rubber for cutting edges?
I only have experience with steel. however I have a good friend who manages the fleet of trucks for a municipality and they love poly, so the next one I replace I will give it a go.
Dude your voice is so low so I turn up the volume then you add this super loud alarm that startles the shit out of me
Sorry about that!
Anything under 4” is durable with a single stage anything above 4” is what a two stage is good for
oh they can do 1 foot. might not work as well as a two stage, but it can be done...And again, way easier to transport than a two stage. Single stage for the win for sure in my books.
Your welcome hahha
I have not done a good job on here. But yep, lots of content comes from posts. I have a longer video coming about this but goes over everything from a shovel to a snowrator.
Where is the plow from I am looking for one for my business
You can get ATV plows from almost anywhere. This is a Polaris specific plow
Route density!!!!! I’m struggling to get route density I plow with tractors and they’re not very fast and so getting a good dense route is a must but I’m having trouble to get people to hop on my services
That can take time. And luck… or both. We are blessed to have a bigger and tighter route this year than ever!
Looking forward to this plow season! Raised prices and everyone understands because of bindennomics. Switching to Brine this year can’t wait!
Do you prefer buying trucks that come with a plow, or buying them seperately?
Personally I enjoy building trucks. It is a better way to understand how they work and helps you to diagnose when (not if) issues come up. I have bought built trucks and I have made many.
@@SnowRemovalInsight. When you say built, are you saying you install everything yourself?
flat rate contracts🤣
I would love to see a video, with photos of different parking lots, and drive ways. with you saying what you would charge per site. by the season rate, by monthly rate, and just breaking it down with some visualizers. thanks for all you do.
Diesel trucks are always superior to gas for snow removal, correct?
That will always be up for debate. If you asked me that 10 years ago, I would say Diesel… now, Gas.
What is your policy for payment, NET 30? NET 60? or even higher? and do you have late fees if not paid on time?
you have to be patient in this Industry. I have net 30, but I do not really enforce a late penalty unless they are almost at 2.5-3m late. I do have late penalties and I do state that if it goes to court, they will pay for all costs involved. Never have I had to do that and I have only issued a late penalty once in the last 10 years
What I don’t understand is that new equipment is priced crazy high, but used equipment is very cheap. Makes no sense
there is no other industry as hard on equipment as the snow removal industry. Used equipment can be great, but you need to know what to look for and what repairs they will need. They all do. Salters are worth 50cents on the dollar the second they leave the store. once they are a couple years old they are worth 20-30 cents on the dollar in my opinion. Plows hold their value a little more, but unless you can see them working, you can get nickle and dimed quick with no mount, hoses, valves, motors controllers etc.
@@SnowRemovalInsight. I am seeing 2-5 year old plows that have been used maybe 10x total in that time period for $.50 on the dollar. $9000 dollar V plow or expanding plow for $4500-5000 Stainless v boxes for $ 2-3000
Hi. Can you please tell me the reason you do not clear the private driveways? Thanks.
two words...NO MONEY
New subscriber here. Great topic and channel. Appreciate the videos!
Welcome aboard! Thanks for the comment and ask away!
Yes I agree, your married to it so you gotta charge for it
Thanks for the comment
Nice!
Thanks! True snow plow owners can relate!
And how hard using your truck as a plow truck is REALLY hard on the truck!
You bet! I only touched on a few of thousands of reasons. No other industry is as hard on equipment than snow plowing!
Your first video I seen you were more of a blanket pricing and that’s what sparked my interest. Saying you could salt Pep Boys parking lot for $500, in northern Michigan. That simply just doesn’t happen not just because everybody’s used to snow on the ground. It’s way more competitive here Because income from snow and ice control is a six months out of the year business. Practically any seasonal business in northern Michigan plows snow from excavation, mosquito control, concrete/ masonry, lawn maintenance, landscaping, hardscaping, pond installation, home builders. Not mention a lot of seasonal laid off workers plow a ton of residential driveways for cash/ beer money. I agree a lot of guys give away their services, but the competition here is pretty healthy so that does dictate a lot of pricing. Like any any good business the bad ones slowly get weeded out but it does hurt the overall industry. Have a good year ahead!
So I just re watched this video...NO WHERE do I say I would salt a pep boys for $500...I also have no clue where I said that in a different video....TAG ME! But I have no clue where you came up with that, nor do I have a comparable site that I could get away with charging $500 to salt as a pep boys. Re watch the video! This is simple math... I say all the time that I am in an area that is a completely different animal ( I say it in this video). The problem is, there are respectable businesses in the east coast and central America that are properly insured and they are competing with the fly by night, none insured fake companies. Listen to what I say in the first min of this video, I agree with you and say we will always charge more than the east...But you should still be making way more money than you are ( most of you, not necessarily you...I do not know what or how you charge). In my opinion, the east and central America should be charging way more for snow clearing and less for salting because you clear way more than us but salt less...however I think things may change with that for liability reasons. My advice to you is educate your clients...all of them. every single one you bid on...educate them on what they are paying for and why someone might be cheaper and why you will be more expensive. 5 years ago it was a bit harder to get the higher amounts. But now it is super easy...I have people who have passed on my quote and went with a cheaper person and were not happy. When they reach out to me, I explain how it does not surprise me and that they get what they pay for. in the end, after going with the cheaper guys year after year and getting poor service, I win them over.
@@SnowRemovalInsight. I was being loose with the terminology my man calm the fuck down! I hear what you’re saying trust me, we on the same page.
@steved.5628 well when you try quoting me on something I never said, you can bet I will correct you. It’s hard for many to even comprehend what I am trying to say and teach here… when accusations get thrown out saying I said something that I did not, I will correct you. Calm down???? what do I need to calm down about? I am simply replying to your comment... Have a great evening!
@@SnowRemovalInsight. yeah when you write a book I figured you were a little uptight so no problem here . Keep making videos I’ll be watching
I call Bullshit because 2 1/2 yards you said and you make 13,000.00. Just salting.
And I do!
Put your money where your mouth is Jamie. I won't hold my breath.
4 Speedway gas stations and I have 10 Turkey Hill’s and 5 Dunkin Donuts. Confidential if it’s confidential, you won’t be putting it out in public.
And you said 2 1/2 yards you make 13,000.00 on just salt
I’d bring all my buddies that watched your video also and say the same thing I have.
I said and have said 2-3 yards I can bring in $13k yep. But again. You have everything to gain by listening and learning. Want to be stubborn… your loss
I noticed you have only or mostly straight plows although so many people claim V-Plows are an absolute necessity to get into commercial. I have a decent truck with an 8' straight plow doing residentials and considering trying to get into commercial next year. Would you mind doing a video on when/if V-plows are necessary/beneficial for what types of accounts?
Honestly. V plows just have more stuff that will break. I will see what I can do about a video.
@@SnowRemovalInsight. That's what I always thought but so many guys claim it's a necessity, it had me wondering if they were a necessary evil or if they just liked spending money.
Hell yeah I hope Jamie takes that bet. Sounds like a charity will benefit. What kind of salting equipment do you use? do you store your own salt and stuff to load it?
It probably won’t because I replied to his comment with the same bet offer…crickets. I prefer to stick to the same brand salters and I go with SHPE series of salt dogg. And yes we have our own salt shed and way to load.
@@SnowRemovalInsight. sounds good
Speed way gas station bought hess gas is the equivalent of a mid size in town station not like a loves truck stop for reference.
Well if that is the case, I am not too sure what he is complaining about because his rates aren’t all that low. He must be comparing a post plow salting to my salting nights which use way less salt.
Speedway are gas stations.
Yeah, read that wrong and didn’t know… regardless, doesn’t change much to his B.S accusations.
Awesome video
Thank you. Please like and subscribe.
Great advice, the tiers do make sense when you factor in the level of risk for each site. As you mentioned in past videos that we are in the slip and fall mitigation service with the plowing of snow off parking areas and applying a solution to melt snow and ice. Each site will have different levels of foot traffic in any given storm. Some sites will want a Zero tolerance amount of snow and ice on the parking and walking surfaces. This will require more visits per site depending on the snow amounts per hour. Additionally, managing the site when the temps go above and below freezing that you will need to apply a salt or brine to mitigate against that newly formed ice from melting. Enjoy your videos, keep them coming.
Thanks for the comment. Yes, from time to time you will hear or get invited to bid on a zero tolerance site. However it is best to never have those words in any agreement. It is impossible to ever have zero ice, snow etc. this is actually one of my favourite topics and really is a hidden gem or golden nugget in the snow removal industry. So many people value all sites the same… they are not. Thanks again for the comment and kind words.
Just trying to understand how you charge for services. You said you get $900-$1200 to salt a Pep Boys parking lot which the biggest one in my area might take 150 pounds of salt. So to do an apartment complex you’d be in the 7 to $8000 range to salt it per time?
I re watched this video. and no where in it does it mention any dollar value. I am unsure where I said I would salt a pep boys for $900 - $1200. Feel free to tag me in that video, but it isn't this one. I will agree that I would be in the $900-$1200 ball park to plow & salt a similar complex....But keep in mind...I have several of my competitors watching my videos, so although I am trying to help with rates, I can not show my cards either. If I said I would charge $1200 for a one time salt on a pep boys, that is incorrect. But I do not see where I said that in this video...Not a single dollar value was mentioned. Nor do I understand how or where you came up with $7k-$8k to salt an apartment per time. This is simple math guys... and I am unsure how you can even come up with that from what I have said in any of my videos.
@@SnowRemovalInsight. l was being very general with the numbers also. Iam not trying to be an asshole. I have been in the plow business for 40yrs. I would love to sit down with you over a beer and discuss how the markets are different by area. I live in Traverse City Mi. We get good snow hear and make good money but not close to you.
@@steved.5628 Didn't think you were being an ass...Just asking for clarity with where you came up with your questions or quotes. Again, Feel free to tag me in a video where I say I would charge $1200 to salt a pap boys....or any site for that matter. I also was unclear how you came up with $7k-$8k per application on an apartment. I want to help you understand, but in order for me to answer or clarify what you miss understood, I need to know where you are getting these numbers from... Because its not from this video, nor is it from any of the others... I could be wrong...I am not perfect...I catch errors in every video I make....some I edit out...some I leave... Regardless, thank you for the comment, like and subscribe.

@@SnowRemovalInsight. lam referring to the video: Don’t do this, you said you make $13,000 per salting using 21/2 yds of salt
Can you do a fleet walk around?
My fleet is nothing crazy. I prefer to own everything flat out. I have everything from a 2022 F450 down to a 1999 F250. 12 trucks total.
I have to tell you I’m in business 27years. I live in Pa. I told how many of my buddies that are in the business. And we all agree you are full of SH-T. 2 1/2 yards of salt and you charge 13,000.00. I call start up bullsh-t. 3,000 pounds of salt and I do Turkey Hill’s and Speedway’s . Plus 5 Dunkin Donuts and I only make 4500.00 salting each place once and that includes a half hour truck charge.
Then you’re not charging enough. You and your friends could learn some things. Watch with open eyes and listen. Don’t be so pissed off. I don’t blame you for not believing. The east coast and parts of Central America is messed up with how they charge. Absolute peanuts!!! But if you are ever on the west coast, I will bet you $15k that what I say is correct… I will even pay for your flight to come over here. We can meet and book an appointment at a notary/lawyer to go over my books and charges and I can show you my salt purchases and proof of everything. You cough up $15k… I cough up $15k and if I can prove (WHICH I CAN) to you in front of a notary or lawyer that all my invoices are real and match all bank records and that we only go through that much salt, than you forfeit your money. Put your money where your mouth is! I am willing to. What do you say??? I know there are other locals that charge just as much as I do…or more! I will draft up an agreement and rules that you can agree to… but in short… I’m willing to prove you saying BS!
Jamie you guys clearly don’t know how to run a company then my first year doing snow removal I cleared 500k know your roll and shut your mouthhhhhhhhh you jabroni!
You gotta give them a break. Honestly 90% of snow removal companies have NO CLUE what they are doing. I can take the criticism...I can understand why they say what they say. This is the most tight lipped industry. I am trying to change that. But telling people to shut their mouth isn't really called for. Is Jamie wrong? yep...Am I wrong? Nope. Does he want to listen and learn something...Probably not, but only he would benefit if he did... Just saying.
I have a video coming out next week JUST....FOR...YOU...JAMIE. Here is the link, but Unfortunately it won't go live till the feb 21. Make sure you and your friends watch it! th-cam.com/video/N0LTV3KUUqE/w-d-xo.html.

Maybe in a few years. Thanks for all your posts…I find them quite inspiring and I like how honest you are about how the business really works.
Yes, looks like we are close...Maybe edit that part out though...
Seeing the same thing in New Hampshire with trucks, plows, sanders, and brine equipment up for sale now in February.
Yep but it seems like people still want top dollar for their old sentimental beat up POS
you just wait. there will be deals come spring summer...
looks like you are in the ozark mountains. there is no tree bloom here in janurary where i am at and it is snow season for 6 months out of the year. if your insurance company won't cover snow removal it's time to shaop for a new insurance company for all your business. it's because they are not set up to cover that, probably because some owner/ceo said it is more profitable with out that risk and dropped all that unnecessary wording and legal needs from their contracts for that line of work. like farmers insurance dropped auto insurance from their policies back i the mid 2000's
Snow removal insurance has gone up 10x for some people over the years. Any new snow removal company can not come close to the rates that an established one pays for snow removal liability. You are absolutely right that some insurance companies are dropping snow removal due to the “RISK”. It IS A HIGH RISK Industry. I do not know any other industry as high risk for their customers. There are less and less insurance companies willing to insure for this. So just going to find another one is harder and harder. Combine that with all insurance companies use the same underwriter, it doesn’t matter that you go to a different broker, they are asking the same underwriters in some cases.
