So, I discovered that these lovely little woodland ants have multiple queens, so in theory I should be able to take a bit of their nest for my terrarium, without the rest of the colony being too disturbed about it. Wish me luck, 'cos I'm going in as soon as the glue's dry on my DIY terrarium!
I carried out the plan, and have them in an aerated bucket as a holding area before I transfer them, soil and all. I'm pleased to say there wasn't too much disruption to the other part of the colony, and the section of soil I cut out, about 3 inches deep, hopefully has a few queens in it. I did see some brood, and the workers seem calm, so long as they have their patch of soil intact. I'll let you know how the terrarium transfer goes in a few days.
i can't wait to have a go but I'm flat out at work till Wednesday. Thank you for posting.
It'll all be there for you when you're ready. Don't work too hard.
Btw. I looooove your tutorials. Thanks from Australia 🇦🇺 ❤
Thank you very much.
Could you use a different colour thread for the couching stitches.? Would it get csught up and show at the end?
I don't think it would be a great idea on thread so fine, because you might have a bit of a job trying to pick it out at the end.
@@Skavop ❤️❤️❤️❤️🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Found these while cutting the grass ❤
I'm not 100% positive on the ID, so if you know differently, feel free to let me know, and I'll check it out further.
Thanks so much for this. It is very timely and meaningful to me. I’m going to try again!
Oh, that's great Mary. I hope you'll keep us posted here if it's going well (only if you feel like it, of course), 'cos every moment not smoking is a triumph. A day or a year, it's the intention to do something about it that's the important thing. Go for it, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.
@@Skavop I’ll just have one more, then I’ll quit for good! Ha ha. I’ll keep you posted.
@@MaryMacKercher Well done on deciding to try again. That's the most important step.
I watched all the chapters, so interesting and so skillful, thank you.
I'm glad you enjoyed them.
It's slightly experimental this, but I'm hoping she likes the terrarium. This is my first sighting of her since popping her in a couple of days ago.
She's continuing to dig tunnels at the edge of terrarium, which is great to see, and I have my fingers crossed that she'll put her claustral chamber right at the edge, so we can all see it.
looking forward to this, thank you x
It's a pleasure.
I'm so excited to get started! You do such a good job of explaining everything
Have fun, and thanks for the positive feedback.
The next video in this project will be up shortly, because it shouldn't take you too long to get the buttercup drawn onto the fabric. Next up is making the cordon, and it's a trickier one than we did on the sampler, so I thought I'd do a full video on that one. Don't worry if you didn't do the sampler project that you'll get lost; you won't, because the playlist of vids that enable you to work through all the stitches we put into the sampler is available in the Description Area below today's video.
It's a very pretty and colourful moth, this one, and they all seem to be coming out on the same day.
Another Nuptial Flight Day here in Ireland (30th July, '24), and I noticed some smallish, more orange queens returning from their day out. They might be Flavus, but I have only seen Flavus workers before, and they are very orange, and rather shy, so I'm not positive. What do you reckon? By the way, the one on the bottom, with the eggs, is a Lasius Niger queen. My first Lasius Niger queen (Queenie) now has four little workers! Obviously, it would be super exciting to have a Flavus colony as well, because they are hard to watch in the wild, being so keen on undergroundishness.
It's just beautiful ❤
Aw, thank you so much.
i'm still loving this. I love the sweet sampler pieces.
They are very cute in their teeny delicate way, aren't they? Great means of monitoring progress, too.
Thankyou. I’ve always wanted to create my own lace. Finally you have gotten me started. Your laces are beautiful.
I'm so pleased you are going to give it a go, and thanks for the nice complement.
I've added Chapters in the Description Area under the video, for your convenience. There's also a link to the whole playlist of 6 videos, in case you need to review any stitches or techniques. I hope you enjoyed the project, and there's another one coming, if you fancy doing a new lace design project after completing the lace sampler.
wonderful. i love it, xx
Thank you.
Wow! Looking forward to the tutorial
Hope you enjoy it. I've one more video for the current project, the lace sampler, then the new one starts. Looking forward to it myself, even though I've done this example one already.
I hope you like this little buttercup design I came up with, because I intend to show you how to do it in the upcoming project. I bet after this project there'll be no stopping you, and you'll be thinking up designs of your own, because you'll have the skills you need to be able to do so.
One of the glorious programmes Open University showed on TV in the 70's. There aren't many recordings saved, sadly, so I couldn't find my favourites. This was before the internet was a thing in our lives, but they were great shows. th-cam.com/video/mdKPyttdMNI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LO4mCUKHqKTwQ9dN
I highly recommend this channel. the tutorials are so clear and interesting. I have finished a fish today using the techniques I have learned and I'm totally hooked.
the pop went well. the edging I found more difficult to judge the size and my loops were too big. i will try again. look forward to the buttercup project too. x
Well, you will get to do loops again on the next project, which I'm looking forward to myself, and it sounds like you're doing really well so far, and learning lots, which will give you confidence for the next one. I'll try to include a couple of new stitches to add to your repertoire on that as well.
@@Skavop thank you. I am hooked !
thank you so much, i'm loving this!
You're so welcome, and thanks for the positive feedback on it. I'm very pleased to be able to share these techniques, because I find it such fun to do, and love to see others get into it.
I've added Chapters in the Description Area under the video, for your convenience.
Great instructions and demonstration. Looking forward to doing this series. 🌟
Thank you, and I hope you enjoy doing it.
Thank you for share ❤
You are so welcome
Thursday's child has far to go in the helping mum out department, but this little lasius niger worker is only one day old, so she deserves a nap. You can see the other one, a few days ahead of her, helping mum move eggs.
That's quite a piercing stare the first worker gave me in the first shot. Like a cute likkle alien hehe.
I have a new queen, with lots out there, returning from their flights, about an hour after my ones from the wild colony by my side door ("Antville") took off, and the returning queens were looking about for somewhere to set up new colonies. I have two queens already from last year, so I just collected one that I noticed had broken off her wings, ready to set up camp somewhere.
Thank you so much for these videos, they're so beautiful and I can't wait to make some lace!
You are so welcome. I hope you have fun.
Congratulations
Thank you so much. A happy day for the new colony, and it's great she has a little worker to help out now.
Queenie and I have been waiting such a long time for this cute little worker to arrive. She's Queenie's little helper, too, and is the first worker to emerge from a pupa. You can see her moving pupae about with Queenie here. Awwww.
So beautiful!!! Such an Art!!! Such a patience!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤❤❤
Well, thank you.
i do love the fancy edging. i look forward to learning that. x
Yes, the edging finishes it off nicely, and makes it look neat too.
oh what a delight to go to you tube and see part 4 :) thank you.
Glad you're enjoyng this series.
I love this. Next time I go to the fabric store I will get that thread and give this a go. You make it look so do able
It's very doable. Just start at Part 1 so you get the support right, and work your way through the parts at your own pace.
Thank you for sharing its very neat 🧵⚘🦘
You are so welcome, and thanks for watching
So awesome. I’ve not heard of this bit before and it’s beautiful
Yes, it's a nice technique for making lace, and one of a few different ways it's made in Ireland.
Beautiful Irish lace you made. So very interesting. Thank you for sharing
You're very welcome, and thanks for watching.
This is so cool. I’m so going to make some of these. Thanks. I hope you continue for many mote samples.
Glad you're going to give it a go. Yes, I'll have more parts to this, and there's a part 3 up already, to keep you going until the next one. Have fun.
That is amazing! And…your accent is absolutely lovely.
Aw. Thank you.
Looks like it’s going to be fun. I’ll have to wait till the 15th to go to the store to buy some fabric. I think I’m going to get a piece of felt too. I have been crocheting little tiny granny squares to practice getting smaller and smaller hooks so this is very fun project. I’ve always wanted to do a slow stitching. I have not done one since I was in high school and we did them as a sampler of our work.
Well, if you love crochet lace you'll probably enjoy doing Irish lace at this small scale. You're lucky your high school taught handcraft skills. So many schools don't do this any more, and it's so important for kids to learn how to make things. Gives one a sense of agency in the world as an adult, to be able to make things with your hands.
I am absolutely in ❤
Great stuff.
This looks very similar to stumpwork. Very interesting.
I'm not well up on stumpwork, although I've seen some lovely videos on it here on TH-cam. Remember, though, that with this lace technique, the stitches are mostly on the front, because at the end of everything, the cotton you built the cordon (scaffolding structure for the stitches) on gets cut away completely, to reveal the lace design without any backing (that bit's pretty fun).
@@SkavopYes, stump work is often built up on wires to be three D. The looping stitch looks the same though, used on the Bayeux tapestry a lot too, all that time ago. The origin of stump work is obscure, so it may have included stitches from Irish Lace in the seventeenth century? Who knows.
@@judithhope8970 Well, I know some Irish lace techniques were imported from France originally, so I bet there was lots of cross-pollination of ideas, to create some of the beautiful things. I just took a look at a blog on early stumpwork and the things they created were pretty amazing, and so cleverly made.
oh my goodness, i have never seen this sort of stitching before. it's fantastic! now i have to see part one -- LOL 😻😻😻😻😻 5/5
Yes. It's an unusual technique, and people have come up with all sorts of ways to make lace through the ages, that you'd never be able to guess the technique behind. Enjoy part one. That's done in a very particular way, too.
yippee...I'm all ready!!!
Oh good. Go for it, and I hope you enjoy.
i'm delighted to know there are more in this series coming :)
Ooo a new book and some book binding!! Sounds fabulous!!
Yes, indeed. Maybe even a movie. Enjoy, and don't forget the popcorn, because I found out the movie is free on TH-cam.
This series has been fabulous and I’ll be trying it soon!!!!
Great stuff, and I'm glad you're enjoying them.
I've added Chapters under the video for your convenience, and there's a link back to part 2 near the beginning at the top right of screen, if you need a fairly in-depth refresher on the Brussels Point section, or haven't tried it out on the left panel yet.
My second piece is indeed better than my first. So enjoying this! I have shared the link to a slow stitch group that allows shared links and hope others will be interested to have a go. I have also shared it on a larger slow stitch group but just my finished result on that one as links are not allowed but people might contact me to ask. waiting with joyful anticipation for part 3. thank you so much.
I'm so pleased you're enjoying it, and are improving. Part 3 is at the editing stage now, so it'll be uploaded really soon. Thanks for sharing.
