Three tunes: Cherokee 1939 Charlie Barnet, Night Over Shanghai 1938 Artie Shaw, After Glow 1936 Spud Murphy arrangement for Benny Goodman. Experimenting with using 2 bx 44 ribbon mics. Rhythm section and vocals no line out just horns. Balance is decent.

AlanGresikMusic.com Letter E, which is the 4th or 5th segment has the saxes playing a unison melody of Taylor Swifts tune Bad Blood. Although the vocals are faint and almost inaudible, the main goal in this video is to confirm that I know how to angle the two bx44 ribbon mics. It's still a work in process. Eventually I might add one more 44 maybe having two on the saxes with one slightly turned at a 12:30 pitch off the dead zone. the brass mic after checking the angle, has to be the same distance from the lead trpt to the ba...

Another Artie Shaw re-score using Sibelius. Original was in sad shape and had no score. Experimented using two bx44 ribbon microphones on the band. Critical part was getting the proper angle as there is no remix. Trying to replicate 1930s recording techniques. Eventually will use 3 mics but will have to use a small mixer as my video camera only has 2 inputs.

Great performance! Sort of an Artie Shaw vibe!
I wish they would pan out from time to time to show the dancers. I would like to see how many people are there.
IT sounds way better using the bx44s. I only have used 2 so far. The video camera I have only has 2 inputs. My sound engineer friend Dan Tinkler told me to use my 21 channel interface critter directly into garage band. Haven't tried it yet. Been rescoring old artie shaw scores from his 1937 band. Some of Jerry Grays writing for Glenn Miller were experimental short version. Like the plunger (hat) + o + effects. Shaw is only using 5 brass. 3 trumpets and 2 trombones. In 1938 3rd tbn was added. In some ways, reconfiguring my instrumentation 4 reeds, 3 trpts, 2 bones, 4 rhythm vocalist : our show includes a radio annoucer or two. plus some of the girls have given it a shot to be radio annoucer. For more info contact Alan at his website: AlanGresikMusic.com : )
That was swell! Bravoooo!
Excellent sound patched from my iMac through an old analog Pioneer tuner with earphones. Seems odd the singer is off camera. Otto's clarinet not quite as audible as tenor. Interesting chart.
This is a fun little potpourri.
what does potporri mean?

Great music
Great or the greatest jazz dance club on the planet?

VinCe!!!!!
This is amazing! I love the whole commercial deals you put in during songs! Wow. I am floored!
There may have been a score. I don't remember. Still had to create a fresh score to generate new improved parts.
Only thing missing from Andy Schumm's Gershwin performance was Fred and Adele.
So good! Was at the Green Mill in 2009, visiting from Cape Town, with my brother from Londpn.
What's a clarinet hybrid? Pleasing chart. Obvious next tune if this were radio would be Roll 'Em.
This is good.
Sounding as great as ever!!!
You haven’t fully experienced Chicago until you’ve spent an evening here!
BIg Al is a musical genus. He studied the styles of early jazz from 1920's to the 1950's, with his emphasis on common practice big band swing era from 1934 to 1947, Benny goodman, glenn miller, artie shaw tommy dorsey. and the fantastic arrangers jerry grey, spud murphy, johnny warrington and fletcher henderson. His band is like no other, a return to a simpler time. I knew Big Al in college, at North Texas State and was lead alto and curved soprano sax soloist, 1982-1986.
What a great sound! Before reading the comments, I was trying to guess what year and thought late 30s maybe ‘39. I knew Gresik in the “Big Al” days at North Texas and was grateful to be his friend. Being bad at correspondence, I lost touch with him after a while, but am psyched to see what he’s done with his band!!!
yes. John. It's me. Never stopped trying to run a swingband since my big al days. give me a call at 708 860 1933

So great to hear that completely, undeniably 30s sound, with the buzz of the crowd to unify it all together!
sounding great!!!
Hey Grant can you send me your phone number? I have a new phone and its not on here. Mine is 708 860 1933
I would love to play in this band again after 43 years. maybe someday.
I am subscribed to this channel. BIg Al was my friend from NTSU, music Jazz college. I was with Big Al when we were at the music library, and he says to me, hey Grant look at all these charts!!! I said... "wow those are from the 1930's?!!!! He asked if he could check them out and they said no. I said let's xerox them, when done, there was about 30 or 40 charts that were played on the old radio station from the 1930's that were played over the air. I played in his first band, Lead alto and Conn Curved soprano, then joined the USAF Bands for the next 23 years. Now I'm retired. this is the 11 piece band featuring horns, 3 sax, 2 bone, 2 trumpet + rhythm guitar, piano, bass, and drums, plus male and female vocalists
❤❤❤ I love it !!! 😍😁
Beautiful authentic sound love early Calloway Ellington and Lunceford. The Cotton Club style particularly.
Klinkt lekker… ❤

Wow “nights over Shanghai”, one of my favorite Artie Shaw title, and unfortunately not played often by nowadays swing bands. Great job guys!
you are welcome. been getting more tunes from the Artie Shaw Collection out of University of Arizona
Very cool and much fun. I would have stopped to listen and missed my connection, probably. Reminds me of an occasion several years ago meeting my son coming home for Christmas from college at the Sacramento Airport and they had a piano player directly below a stairway where arriving passengers descended. My son liked Monk's In Walked Bud (specifically the version with Jon Hendricks's vocal) and I asked the pianist if he knew the tune. He didn't by name, but, as the saying goes, I hummed a few bars and he recognized it. As my son reached the top of the stairs, I gave the high sign and he started playing as my son walked down in time to the music. Always regretted that I got distracted and failed to tip the guy.
Beautiful! I wish I could play this well.
You can. All you have to do is play for 40 years. Then it becomes easy.
Classy!!
Sounds great!!!!!!!
Sweet Georgia Brown
Why are you not singing the melody of Happy Birthday?
Particularly liked Andrea's vocals.
Love how Ms. Kestler sells her songs. Excellent voice, but her whole presentation deserves mention. Her hand gestures and general stage presence raises the songs higher.
is that good?
Hey big Al, Really nice group you have, I love the singer and the sax player!!!
Thanks Grant. This was a once off. I work with these musicians on a regular basis for my green mill steady.
❤❤❤
thanks for watching
first tune was a first read. It is a challenge not to sound too 20s on early 30s pop tunes. Guess its time for a rhythm section rehearsal
Great Show Alan!
You are welcome. Are you a musician as well?
Don’t miss the great band when in Chicago!!
Alan do you have this tune written down somewhere? It is beautiful. I wonder what could be done with it to get it into the Mill. Even if you don't have those aspirations, it's a beautiful piece of work as is.
No. just made it up as I went along. was trying out the record feature on a keyboard I was trying out. Ended up not getting the keyboard. Yes, I have a wonderful ability to make up melodies like this. out of nowhere. Not sure what style to call this.
this would be impossible to score for the orchestra. besides i was just improvising new melodies as they were executed by my brain at the speed of light.
Couldn't find a single woman for the band?
Why stop there? How about an indigenous trans person
