Hi doc! Im thinking of using a metal partial denture but I have many doubts and fears. Do the clasps damage the healthy teeth where they are attached? Can I chew and eat well with it? Is it a good option today? Thanks!

Thanks for the question! Metal partial dentures are a great option due to their strength. Long term, it’s a great option as the base of the denture is quite strong, and can really help distribute the forces evenly while chewing food. They can be designed in such a way to prevent speech impact, and overall be more comfortable than a plastic denture base. In regard to the clasps - depending on the health of your natural teeth currently they can damage teeth that are compromised already, however we can incorporate certain elements into the design of the denture to help prevent unwanted forces on teeth that may be slightly weak. For the most part the clasps shouldn’t damage existing teeth as they help prevent the denture from moving around, the clasps add stability. Overall, cast partial dentures (metal) are a fantastic option for someone looking to replace missing teeth in a partially edentulous arch because of strength, comfort, and longevity.
