How to Extract Elements from IFC File using BonsaiBIM
This video demonstrates, how to use BonsaiBIM (formerly known as BlenderBIM) to extract part of IFC file to a new IFC file. To achieve this, user can utilize ExtractElements patch. This patch enables extraction of specified elements to a new file. Elements can be specified using queries, so the user has complete control over what is extracted.
The video provides example of extracting all walls, all walls and slabs or all load bearing walls a slabs. Any other objects can be extracted, user has complete control over the extraction using filters.

Bonsai (formerly BlenderBIM): save as an IFC or a Blend file?
มุมมอง 2.8K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this quick tip for Bonsai (formerly BlenderBIM) the difference between saving as IFC project and saving as blend file. The difference is that when saving to .ifc file, only geometry and properties specified in IFC schema are saved. None of the pure Blender geometry and properties are saved in an IFC file. When saving a .blend file, both ifc and Blender geometry are saved. The IFC schema data...

I've done the same, but my BricsCAD will not load any pat files other than the default. Do you know the solution to this?
I have no idea what the culprit might be.
thank you so much man! you almost filled the whole gap between theoretical and practical understanding
I am glad the tutorial was useful for you.
Hi Tom, congratulations on this series of videos. I am already subscribed to the channel, I hope you continue uploading more Bonsai BIM videos.
Thanks for subscribing! Hopefully I will be able to continue producing videos about BonsaBIM.
Is it possible to export a selection of ifc element from blender bim as a separate ifc?
Yes, it is possible. See this video by Petru: th-cam.com/video/5JySSA2buVc/w-d-xo.html
Thanks a lot!
You're welcome!
I was looking for a way to convert USDZ to IFC. This video was the easiest to understand. Thank you.
I am glad it helped you! Would not think of BlenderBIM being the most suitable software for USD -> IFC file converter, but Blender is full of surprises :)
that is a great tutorial ! I wonder if we can extract also material properties like thickness , density , I hope you can answer i need this in my academic work thank you
Hi, I am not sure about the extraction of material properties. Never used that. But I suppose it should work.
This was a great way to bring this topic closer to us, it was so foreign to me and I couldn't see how helpful it can be if used on day-to-day processes, thanks a lot.
Thanks for letting me know the video is helpful.
Thanks a lot! this was amazing and helpful! Please keep on posting the good stuff.
Thank you for the praise.
Hello, i am trying to do the test, but when i generate the xml, the properties minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="unbounded", are place in <ids:applicability> tag and when i run the test it crash with this error: xmlschema.validators.exceptions.XMLSchemaValidationError: failed validating {'minOccurs': '1', 'maxOccurs': 'unbounded'} with XsdAttributeGroup(): Reason: 'minOccurs' attribute not allowed for element, then i move the properties to the <ids:specification > tag like it shows in the video and it works, i cant figure out why this is happening? why the web do diffrent now?
Did you try editing the mesh and saving the edits to an ifc? That just does not work for me and it’s quite fundamental..,
If the mesh is classified as an IFC class than yes, the edits are saved in the IFC. When you are editing mesh, which is an IFC element, when you tab out of the edit mode, BlenderBIM asks you, whether the changes should be saved. I am talking about mesh object, which was created as a standard Blender mesh (Shift+A). I am not talking about BIM elements created by BlenderBIM tools.
Thank you, TAB was the needed key, strange it does not work if you just use the drop down menu to go back in object mode
@@marcelloferri That is a good catch. I reported the problem and it is difficult to fix, so it will stay this way in the forseable future: github.com/IfcOpenShell/IfcOpenShell/issues/4479
Hello, for the pattern value at 28:10, when you click on the "+", you have "Pattern" on the menu ;)
Nice catch, so I did not have to copy the pattern value :).
Nice Video!! please can you create a video on how to add or remove properties from ifc file and how to export it back as an IFC file.
Thanks for the suggestion, I might create such a video in the future.
Thank you, an excellent tutorial
Thanks for the praise, I am glad you like it.
Great workflow presentation. Congrats
Thank you, I am glad you find the video useful..
From Brazil: Thank you very much for the video. It was truly remarkable, and congratulations. I have a question: are the operations performed to create the filters for the columns of Pset documented in the blenderBIM documentation?
Hi, you can get most of the filters using these queries, the page provides useful examples: blenderbim.org/docs-python/ifcopenshell-python/selector_syntax.html Sometimes trial and error approach is needed. BlenderBIM is in rapid development and sometimes the documentation does not catch up. There are also helpful people in the osarch forum: osarch.org/
You're genuinely an amazing teacher and presenter. Your style of walking us through the process step by step really works well in these demonstrations as we are able to see what result each little addition or change produces. Looking forward to more of your content! 👍
Thanks for your kind words. I have plans for new videos, but currently have no time to create them. Hopefully I will get to making them soon.
I heard that dotbim project is working on making bim files as small as possible so it loads faster and can ve viewed online so why blenderbim should use ifc instead of dotbim which is also open-source as well.
Hi, that is interesting information, I did not know about the dotbim file format. The point of native IFC modelling is that IFC is open, quite well established in the industry and it is an international ISO standard. Also, from what I understand, the dotbim file format was developed for the purpose of exchanging geometry and data in the most simple ways. IFC has other purpose than the data/geometry exchange.
Great video! I hope you continue doing this amazing job!
Thanks, I will try my best :)
Congrats 👏👏👏
We need more of such open data formats like ifc tutorials… keep it up
Thanks! Will try to keep it up :)
thanks for the video as a beginner, I also check the model opened both in BlenderBim and BIMVision (or any IFC viewer) to avoid mistakes in IFC
Yes, even though it should not be the case, it is good practice to check ifc models in multiple viewers. I encountered a simple IFC file, which had 3 different positions of a column depending on which of the three IFC viewers it was opened in :)
@SPB-production I watched the video over again and I must congratulate you for its value, in a few minutes and some practical examples the use of IDS tool can be implemented in our workflow. Unlike several other videos on this platform that spend hours on the topic without being able to do the same. Please continue with your videos on BlendeBim, will look for you on OSArch community, thanks
Thank you, Stefano. I am glad the video was helpful :)
I think this is the first video on YT using the BBIM 231104 release, thanks!!! Nice idea to use LibreOffice format, you don't have to close and open the app to reload the file like in Excel
The 231104 version was just a coincidence - I was about to start recording and found out that the new version of BlenderBIM just dropped. So I figured I would try that one and it worked :). I am not sure whether there is something new in the Spreadsheet Export/Import tool this release, compared to the last offical one from September.
thank you for this video I tried to do the same thing but blender gives me problems do you mind if I send you my files (just a wall and a window) so you can tell me what I did wrong? thank you
Sure I can try to take a look at your project. You might also consider using the osarch community forum: community.osarch.org/ , there are much more knowledgeable people there than me :)
Amazing, thanks
Thank you very much Great Video...how can a specific Attribut be checked for a certain Model for example to check for the attribute "FireResistance" for only the objects that have certain Patterns? and if UsBIM supporitng Infrastructure IFCs like IfcBridge...etc
I am glad the video was helpful. 1) You can filter elements by any Class / Attribute / Property / Classification or Material. So you could setup checking some property value, which only certain objects have - if the object has this property value, than FireResistance attribute needs to be checked. The possibilities are vast. 2) Yes, usBIM supports IFC schema 4x3 which includes Infrastructure objects.
Very helpful, thanks!
I am glad it helped!
Thanks for making this tutorial!
I am glad you found it helpful.
