Join me on a monthly walk through my garden in New Zealand, where I try to grow as much as I can, as cheap as I can.
DIY FISH FERTILIZER
Today we're making fish fertiliser .
This fertiliser has been magical for raising my seedlings, its cram packed full of everything my plants need to thrive.
It's totally changed my seed raising game.
Special thanks to @gardenlikeaviking for his tutorials which have guided me on a path to success.

Here we are, first month of spring and I'm starting to get set for the summer season. The purple broccoli has finally started to produce after a year in the ground The fruit trees have flowered, and my peas have made it through the slug assault. Onions will go in the ground today and the Kumara is growing strong. Here's the link to my first month of spring video from last year if your keen to s...
Garden diaries - Third month of winter

This month, we're having a clean up and getting ready for the upcoming season. It looks like I've turned a corner with the slugs as my peas are finally starting to get some decent growth. The fruit trees are starting to come to life, and I've hoed up the sweetcorn bed and sowed it with a cover crop.

This month has been chilly with a few frosts and little rain for the second month of winter, it's looking more like spring Things I'm growing this month are, onion and brassica seedlings and I think I'm getting on top of the slug and snail onslaught. I have lost a few pea seedlings but have had back ups ready to go. I'm still spraying selectively with the slug solution from @gardenlikeaviking t...

It's the winter solstice, and things are a little quiet. I've got my onions sown in trays, and the broccoli and lettuces are looking good. The Peas are sown this month, and the war on slugs and snails is on. Check out the Ultimate Slug Solution video below. We're still growing potatoes, and we've built some pretty good bird covers for the raised beds. The Yam harvest was poor, but the mandarins...

looking good my friend thats going to be some really potent stuff!!!... you ought to go back and get the same quantity of fish and make the FAA and see the difference!!
Thanks. Yes, I was thinking about that. May be next year.
Cheers mate, enjoyed the video
Hello fam. We have everything here. The strawberries are looking good. Tis evident you really have been busy.wow 3 kiloz frozen peas.thats a lot. Happy gardening ❤❤
Thanks, I know right. After getting upset and a little concerned about the slug damage, the peas come good. Now their nearly done. I need to get my beans in. That'll be the next thing I get all stressy about 😅
Great stuff from across the ditch , Gunna do mine like that
Fabricate a soffer with tube steel
Looks great!
@@CinnamonBear-xv4eq Thanks, fingers crossed 🤞 for a good season 😀
Your lettuce looks great!
some food for thought. Not so many holes in the top (like none) and more in the bottom. Helps preserve the heat. Also may pay to grab some insulation bats and tie to the drum and the lid. Again, helps preserve the heat.
Love how you cut to the chase, and got the important bits squared away. One suggestion I have is.. Why put the inner barrel at the bottom? Why not put it near the top, with wood stacked underneath? Wouldn't that make the process more efficient? I will try and do that myself this weekend and post a video. Great video either way mate! Thanks for the info!
@@johnkilgallon207 Thanks for the comment. My inner barrel is set up like this because I have drilled 5 holes in the base of it to vent the gases release from the wood inside, and sitting on the bottom keeps any fire from entering the inner barrel and turning it all to ash. I found this video very useful th-cam.com/video/svNg5w7WY0k/w-d-xo.htmlsi=qw_b2A2lu8xWPNCd
it wasn't burning on one side so that is why it took too long to burn clean there are places where the paint still stand didn't get hot enough when lighting it up from the top wait until it burns completely on each side then put the chimney
Thanks @MohdAradi that's what I was thinking. I was too keen to get that chimney on. Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely let that fire get going good next time. 👍
@@GardenHoardNZ the drum will breakdown around the 15-20th firing if you don't get stainless but that's expensive I primarily use a cone pit method and now just bought a TLUD camping stove that I can cook with while making the charcoal
make gun powder
Omg ! I knew Nate had something special when he mentioned under culture! But I thought you need to make sure it was a bright pink g string ?? Or is it granny panties?
@@Returntothesoil I think the pink G is best, but you just need to use what you have available 🤣🤣
Great end result. If you want a hotter burn use fans on the outside
Sure looks like it works 🩲
That’s pretty amazing
Is it for charcoal? Or biochar? If you wanted to make bio char try filling the smaller barrel with wood chips , I do this on a much small scale and it works great
@CinnamonBear-xv4eq I just put this lot in my compost, which I brew for about 2 years. I make a grass, cardboard and leaves pile in the first year, it's is this I'll add the charcoa to,l then in the second year I only add kitchen scraps and leaves for a year then leave it till I'm ready for it
Great video!
Hadn’t seen this method of making charcoal yet, well done mate!
@philrocket7951 I just watched a heap of YT videos then gave it a go. It worked out good I think
Pretty cool system, where do you buy a cheap garden bed like that? I haven’t seen one before
Hi my viking friend @CinnamonBear-xv4eq I haven't before ether, normally they're too expensive or just too flimsy. We're in New Zealand. These just happened to pop up in a clearance shop we have here while I was looking for some sort of cover for my strawberries, I figured I'll be able to set these up as wicking beds.
@@GardenHoardNZ good call with strawberries, they need to be contained- mine are spreading all over and I hate to cut them back but I know they need to be
@CinnamonBear-xv4eq tell me about it. I've had these strawberries for quite a number of years, I let them just do their thing. I dig them up when i get keen and try different spots and hope to beat the birds, but it never works out. This year, fingers crossed 🤞 is my year
Thats a good gadget, self watering.cant wait to see the plants in a few weeks to come❤❤
@bongiwesminihomestead6981 Thanks. Yes, the little prototype worked well. These ones look to be going alright, but time will tell
@@GardenHoardNZ Yes they look great,😊❤️
😂😂

Garden looking beautiful and healthy ❤ 11:15
Fingers crossed for a good season this year
5:06 peas looking great 👍🏽
4:09 apricot tree wow we'd be having apricots soon😊
Thanks for the tour. The garden is looking great.Happy gardening 🌹
@bongiwesminihomestead6981 Thanks, yes, slowly but surely, if only these slugs will let up on my peas, but we're getting there
@@GardenHoardNZ slugs can be annoying sometimes. All will be well slowly but surely 😊 Have a lovely weekend 🌹
Great information
Nice garden space. That's interesting about the tomatoes. I hope you figure it out. Im a new subscriber 🌞
It is weird cos the other tomatoes weren't affected. I'll plant the Amish Paste tomatoes a little later next season. Thanks for the comment and the subscribe 👍
Everything looks so nice and healthy. I'm waiting patiently for the temps to warm up here. 😀
Thanks 🙂 Yes it took a while to get going, and the tomatoes upset me, but other things are doing great 👍
such a wonderful variety of things!!!... is your climate area primarily overcast and cloudy and temperate with lots of rain??...
Generally, that is our climate and good volcanic soil, so i dont have much of an excuse. This summer has been hot and dry for us with little rain. This time last year, it rained practically all summer, and we had "a state of emergency" level flooding. Like you say, we need to adapt and build resilience. 👍
Sweetcorn looks great 👍
Thanks, picked a couple today, taste pretty good too 🌽🤌👍
Happy New year Have no idea Hopefully someone sees the video and help out new friend here
Thanks for the comment. I'm thinking it's too much water (hoping) as we have had ALOT of rain this month.
@@GardenHoardNZ it could be.m sorry about that. With mine I've noticed they have put on too much leaves and not flowering. We have been having lots of rains too here.
Verticillium wilt maybe 🤔
Thanks for the suggestion. Is there a way of checking if it's Verticillium?
yes the Amish paste tomatoes are EXTREMELY weak and prone to all sorts of diseases... literally the weakest of all the tomato plants I've grown... always the first to catch the blight and if your soil is out of balance in any way they will show the symptoms first... that being said... they do produce very delicious, hearty, meaty paste tomatoes that are worth the effort.... everything else looks great so I wouldn't worry too much but they look like a stressed root zone possibly from overwatering or overfeeding...
Thanks, Nate, for the feedback. Do you think I should remove the plants? I was just gunner wait a see if they recover, but I think they're toast.
every things looking good brother thanks for the shoutout... I didn't catch the name of that cover crop that you don't want to plant again??...
Hi Nate, Thanks for your comment, I value your input. I'm planning on doing a video every month as a type of diary for myself. Check them out if you have time. The cover crop is a mix of Lupins, Mustard and Garden Oats. The Oats totally dominate. They do provide a good source of green mulch/compost material. I'll use them under my fruit trees but not in my spring garden
