PUKEKOHE LONGKEEPER ONIONS
The Pukekohe Long Keeper onions have been harvested.
We'll get them cured then stored away for the winter.
We got a mixed lot of onions so some will be pickled or fermented the others will get used as slicers for cooking.
Th ones that last the distance will be used as seed onions for the next season.

    some food for thought. Not so many holes in the top (like none) and more in the bottom. Helps preserve the heat. Also may pay to grab some insulation bats and tie to the drum and the lid. Again, helps preserve the heat.

    Love how you cut to the chase, and got the important bits squared away. One suggestion I have is.. Why put the inner barrel at the bottom? Why not put it near the top, with wood stacked underneath? Wouldn't that make the process more efficient? I will try and do that myself this weekend and post a video. Great video either way mate! Thanks for the info!

      @GardenHoardNZ 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@johnkilgallon207 Thanks for the comment. My inner barrel is set up like this because I have drilled 5 holes in the base of it to vent the gases release from the wood inside, and sitting on the bottom keeps any fire from entering the inner barrel and turning it all to ash. Generally, that is our climate and good volcanic soil, so i dont have much of an excuse. This summer has been hot and dry for us with little rain. yes the Amish paste tomatoes are EXTREMELY weak and prone to all sorts of diseases... literally the weakest of all the tomato plants I've grown... always the first to catch the blight and if your soil is out of balance in any way they will show the symptoms first... that being said... they do produce very delicious, hearty, meaty paste tomatoes that are worth the effort.... everything else looks great so I wouldn't worry too much but they look like a stressed root zone possibly from overwatering or overfeeding...

      Hi Nate, Thanks for your comment, I value your input. I'm planning on doing a video every month as a type of diary for myself. Check them out if you have time. The cover crop is a mix of Lupins, Mustard and Garden Oats. The Oats totally dominate. They do provide a good source of green mulch/compost material. I'll use them under my fruit trees but not in my spring garden
